I still have both the Sony RX10iv beige camera as I rebuild my Nikon full frame D750 and lens collection. In this video I take a trip to Dartmoor and reflect on the output from each camera. I have included a numbered slideshow at the end and ask if you can identify which shots are Nikon and which are Sony...
OBVIOUSLY, they are not directly comparable cameras - I understand that. But they are the ones that I have and I know that many people face a similar personal decision to make as to what kind of system they should invest in.

Hi Nigel, thank you for sharing this, lovely experience watching that. My D7000 gave up on me after many years of sterling service and the Z8 or 9 isn’t possible right now thus, the RX10 comes into focus for a few reasons, image quality probably better than my beloved D7000, versatility, no sensor spots due to no lens to remove, weather sealing and lastly you cannot pack the lens range from 24-600mm into your luggage without sacrificing underwear due to the size and weight. It’s a really good option for travel BUT Sony is playing silly buggers on the roadmap for the RX family of cameras. Each and every mobile phone launch focuses on the camera system as the competitive advantage yet non can reasonably do what Sony can do with the RX10, yet, Sony stays quiet instead of pressing into the gap for high zoom with excellent image quality in a reasonably small package. If the RX10mk5 ever appears, I’ll most certainly buy it.

Thanks for watching and your comments. It’s such a shame that Sony have not updated the RX10. For what it’s worth I think that this is a recognition that it, in some ways, offers so much that adding further to it would disuade too many photographers that investment in a full-frame interchangeable lens system is needed.

You inspired me to come over to the dartmore some day....:-). Very nice pictures and video. I replaced my canon 70d years ago with this sony camera and i am still glad i did it.

Had the Nikon D750, switched to the Sony RX10IV and that was absolutely the right decision.

It sounds like your choice is between two distinct ways of shooting rather than between two camera systems. One is the classic DSLR landscape photographer with tripod and filter set and a lot of attention to getting composition just right. The other is more run and gun, spontaneous, opportunistic, in the moment, and shooting from the rucksack strap. With a versatile zoom lens like a Tamron perhaps the D750 can give you both modes?

I have RX10 IV, it's great all in one tool for long walks, when I can use telezoom (for photos and 4K videos of the boats and ships at the sea coast), also for slow motion videos (seagulls), then 24 fps burst shootings (seagulls in fly) and doing macro photos in nature (butterflies and other insects) from standing (using 600 mm for macro, so I often don't need to go to the knees), etc.. But it's still not full frame, it has terrible stabilization for 4K video, I can't use it much in the dusk inside the forest (unless I go to ISO over 3200) even with its F4.0 if I want to zoom to the birds and not having 1/15 seconds, I can't change zoom manually and the motor of zoom is not that precise (especially during the videos), so it's not very perfect camera, but at least I don't need to have a backpack and change the lenses every few minutes. ;) And then I have also phone, P40 Pro (Huawei) and I mostly use it's 50 MP AI feature, when it needs 3 seconds to capture plenty of photos (with different focus and exposures) which it processes then internally (it takes 7 or 8 seconds) into one photo. That 50 MP AI mode can be used only with 23 mm, but it's really incredible what you can capture, especially in great bright sunny day. When I enlarge these photos later to 100% on the monitor, it looks as I used zoom, but it's just 23 mm photo. In the lower light conditions there appears some posterization and less sharpness in the corners, but still, when I go into old towns to the small tiny streets, I usually have my RX10 IV in the bag and I use only P40 Pro, which gives me in this 50 MP AI mode photos with pretty much absence of noise and the details which are on the next level, what I could get probably only with 10 times more expensive gear if I would try to get this with "normal" cameras (like 40+ MP and expensive lenses). And there is pretty much none (zero, nada) information about this 50 MP AI mode anywhere on internet. If you like, you can try to buy a second hand P40 Pro cheap these days and check alone - it can't compete with its colors but certainly with its details and sharpness and absence of noise in this 50 MP AI mode and there are occasions where you probably wouldn't get similar image even with your Nikon gear. At least worth to try. I can send you some of my photos to check, if you tell me how to reach you. Not to mention, that I can shoot with P40 Pro also blurry silky water surface in the middle of sunny day (also from the sunny beach), holding the phone in my hands (not on tripod) for half minute and still have sharp details around the silky foggy water. If I would try to get such photo with any other camera, I would need a tripod, also ND filters, etc.. ;) Thank you for your videos, you inspire with your stories and your experiences and also decision making thoughts.

Many thanks for your extensive comments. Interesting about the AI mode on the Pr0 Pro. My iPhone 11 Pro Max is often better in certain conditions than my Nikon… UNTIL I want to really push it in editing, when the lack of bit-depth really shows. I think we shall see the likes of Nikon, Sony and Canon begin to push-back on some of these features over the next two to three years. BTW, I have used my Sony to create long exposures handheld. Put it on its fastest frame rate and shoot continuously for a second or so to capture multiple images. You can then blend these together in Photoshop, which will create a long exposure effect. Worth trying. My iPhone also offers the long exposure option in editing mode. Should you wish to contact by email, you’re very welcome to do so at nigelbaileyphoto@icloud.com

Hi - I'm glad that you have enjoyed my video. There are more than another 100 on my channel! I edit still images with the Adobe Lightroom software and also with some use of Photoshop. For night-time photography, I also use various specialist items of software such as Starry Landscape Stacker and some plugins for Photoshop. The plugins are a bit beyond the scope of a short reply as they relate to astro photography with my Nikon cameras. I hope this helps and that you enjoy using you RX10iv.

Yes - the D750 is definitely a more capable camera in many ways. On the other hand, there are many images I would never have taken with it because it tends to be far less accessible. My main gripe with the Sony is that it doesn't crop well, I don't like the "shape" of the pixels (I know that sounds weird), poor low-light performance and the colour tones are too harsh. I guess I need to get myself a good all-purpose zoom to go with the Nikon.

Yeah that’s what we all do most > taking photos in low light especially those who bought the versatility of a camera up to 600mm… And the Sony is so inflexible > from taking macros to teleshots 🤣
