In this quick video we take a look at a couple of useful items that I recently came across. The first is the Robin Wood carving hatchet. A great mid priced hatchet that will suit all light camp duties and green wood carving, then we flick through the pages of 'Woodland Craft' a book by Ben Law showing how to make an array of woodland projects, both large and small. Both will get used extensively throughout the year and I'm looking forward to doing so. Thanks for watching...........

Hi X-RAY ZULU, I hope you are keeping well :) I'm glad you are happy with the axes. All of the reviews I read were all positive, so for the money I thought it would be a shame not to buy one. Yeah I love Spring too. After a few months of quiet, bare woodlands and rivers, I love it when it all starts to come alive again. All the new leaf growth and fresh smells. One day we seem to have nothing, then next time you head out everything has that tinge of green about it :) Soon be with us mate. It has been a nice day today. It had a nice warm feel to it and even the birds were singing. Thanks for watching as always, all the best, Mark :)

That looks far nicer than mine. Mines got a sort of “pebble dashed” finish on the axe head, it makes it look as though it was cast rather than forged. It works well, but looks cheap.

Some great kit there Mark . I've used the carving axe before and I can definitely vouch for them. My cousin has had one for a few years and loves it. Really nice to use and sharp enough to shave with . Sure he has the book too (he's a carver). Looks a great book and definitely worth investing in. Cheers for the reviews Mark and looked a perfect day to be out in the forest. All the best, have a fantastic week 👍🙂. Regards Rick

You could do a bit of shooting in the morning, then off into the woods to cook your kill and do a bit of carving. It would make a great video :) I'm going to try and get more into the traditional crafts this year. Things that we used all used to do and know. Great video as always. Book looks superb. The hatchet is awesome, sharpened in Sheffield. There used to be thousands of little mesters. Now down to 1 😱 will have to save my pennies and get one. Was looking at Hulterfors or Gransfors so this is a great recommendation. 👍🏻

Hi Michael, I hope you are well mate :) I remember when I was a kid, all the steel things in the house were made in Sheffield. Especially the cutlery. Yeah I was looking at the Hultafors for a while. But I spent about £250 on axes last year for work and home, and didn't fancy spending another £90 on a small carving axe as well. But for £39, I couldn't resist :) If you buy one and you want a mask for it, let me know and I will do that for you. It will save you a bit more money :) A thank you for the bollock pouch lol. Cheers Michael, all the best, Mark :)

Hi Mark, I had lusted for a Gransfors Bruks, but then decided it would be a Hultafors now I’m thinking that this would be better, plus supporting British businesses. Handle made here, axe head sharpened here. Hatchet made and sold here. 3 businesses at least. Pleased you like the bollock bag. 😎 If I get a hatchet I’d love a Mark Bailey hand crafted mask 👍🏻

Hi @@Yorkshiremadmick, I hope you have had a nice day mate. I've been armpit deep in water all day..... at least the sun was out for 10 minuets lol. I was also looking at the Hultafors. But it was another £100 plus postage. But for £39.00, I thought I would give the Robin Wood one a try, and I have been very happy with it. Obviously when you buy a Swedish axe, then you are using Swedish steel. So that always pushes the price up. I'm not sure where these heads are forged, but the steel is still OK. Yeah, I like to support our companies where possible. Especially the small independent guys. No problem Michael, if you need a mask making any time, just let me know :) Have a great evening, all the best, Mark.

Ben Orford has some brilliant sharpening videos on his channel. I will add a link to where he uses a bench stone to do it. That way if you use it for sharpening your knives, you can use the same stone for your axe. He also has some good videos on sharpening hook knives too. I found them really useful when I first started using them. If you got into the larger projects in the book it would take me a lifetime as it goes into details of making log cabins and wood sheds etc. I only have a few small hand tools lol. Yeah the hatches are great for the money. I ended up buying a couple. One I use for my carving and the other I use at work for trimming odd branches away from the lakes and splitting small pieces of wood for making brews and cooking lunch. Thanks for taking the time JT.... have a great week mate, all the best, Mark :)

Hey Mark, many thanks for the review of the Robin Wood axe in particular. I've had my eye on this and now happy to purchase one as part of my spoon making kit on tbe strength of this review and your credibility. Hi D G, I hope you are keeping well mate 👍. Many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. For the money I have been very happy with the carving axes. I picked a second one up that I use at work for clearing and cutting in swims around the lakes. I think the name in general is 'green wood carving or green woodworking', but when it comes to spoons most people call it spoon carving or perhaps whittling. I don't think I have heard it called anything else. Have a great day.... all the best, Mark :)

@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Darryl, I hope you are keeping well mate :) Yeah, the book is a great read. Like I said, I'm not much of a reader, so for me to buy a book, I thought it was worth bringing a few brain cells back to life lol. Unless you are felling trees or working with large pieces of wood, then it is always worth starting off with a small hatchet. And for the money it isn't too expensive if you only use it now and again. No I don't work for the FC. I used to be a ranger on Dartmoor and Exmoor national park for a few years, but I'm a fishing guide and fishery manager. So we are always clearing paths along rivers or around the lakes and the fishery. I try to use anything that we cut down. Some we keep back for fire wood for next Autumn and winter, but the smaller pieces I take for carving. Thanks Darryl, all the best, Mark :)

I stopped on by this vid due to the thumbnail of the maul/mallet. ReallybigMonkey/Dave showed as that made on the fly, using it for a cordage free teepee shaped shelter. ~ Wedge four V notched straights under the lip(to start) handle side down and can pound the straights to earth banging the head downward. Pocket saw and batoning keenly was all it took to make one. Slightly larger lip can fit eight or so straights once set upright/first four stabilized. Harder soil as outback one may not have success unless hardened pointy earth ends. meh ~ I thought it was cool. So I made one to keep in the truck. Mallet if needed, and emergency shelter center hold. ..of course one would need to find a bit of log to pound it in. tips me hat ~
