CNC Basecamp Ep001: Smooth Cuts in Plywood

Flat, stable and available in a wide number of species, plywood is an ideal material to be machined on a CNC router. In our first show, we’re going to look at how to get the best cuts in plywood by trying out 4 different bits: straight, upcut, downcut and compression.
We’ll apply what we have learned to create a project that I know you will find useful - stackable sawhorses. Strong and sturdy, these sawhorses can be used as a handy stepstool for low assembly stands or stacked for the full height of a traditional sawhorse. We’ll take you through both the cutting and assembly of these horses. DXF files are available free for you to download and make your own.

Thanks for putting this series together. I spent the first part of the year building the Woodsmith CNC and I'm starting to dive into using it. A lot of the information in this video can be found scattered elsewhere, but it's great to have it all in one place, and not feel rushed through or that a KZfaqr is just trying to make a sales pitch for whatever high-end CNC that was given to them. I'm looking forward to more in this series!

I'm so excited to see that you've begun this series. I enjoyed your videos on building a CNC and even bought the plans. I ended up building a different CNC and now I need to start using it. There are a lot of things to learn and I'm a bit overwhelmed. I appreciate the Woodsmith way of teaching woodworking techniques and hope your videos help me to start doing more with my new tool. I know you favor the Aspire CAM products but they are very expensive. If I could make a request, it would be to provide some examples of other ways to create the g-code you need with other programs. Fusion 360 is available for a good price but the learning curve is very steep, so that has me stymied as well.

Great video and series, thanks for sharing. One thing I noticed, that I have learned from other woodworkers on KZfaq, is that you shouldn't be hearing that high pitched chatter from your router like your video has. I believe the feed rate is too high. But I could be wrong, I just thought I would point it out. Thanks again.

Hi , thank you so much for this very instructional video. Could you please let me know what sort of NEMA size are the stepper motors used in your machine? I am setting up my own custom machine for cutting plywood so I was thinking of getting your motor sizes as a guideline. Thank you for your help!

NEMA 23. I have 2 machines that run NEMA 23 motors and they work great.

minimum need use ema 23 450OZ/3Nm motors woodworkers cnc machine, this is minimum , alltime better if can use biggest motors nema 34 6-12Nm motors. same spindle, important NOT use router, not have plan used cnc machine worst noisy and destroy bearings fast. same money can buy better more torque real spindle etc, minimum used 800W air cooled ER 16 20 000RPM spindle cheapen than many router but more torque and better bearing and silent lot than router.

Aren't your cuts chattering and vibrating, especially during slotting with compression bit?

Why not start with a downcut and halfway through change for an upcut, sure its the same as a compression; but if you don't need/have the depth of cut than surely its the only clean solution?

how i set spindle speed right because i have 800W DC air cooled ER16 spindle, power supply have adjustable whit potentiometer but not know how fast this run. max speed is 20 000RPM. i use normal 4mm downcut and 6mm up cut bits. i think maybe need buy some bit more, first run 4mm down cut top come nice and then change bit 4mm up cut if cutting 21mm plywood piece out of sheet. im worry can i cut pocket deep whit 4mm down cut bit worry not cut deep and broken bit. not have good vacuum system my DIY plywood frame cnc machine. i has cut little plywood im beginner yet, only some parts has make, i has drop feed lot because noise and vibration lot if speed have about 900mm/meter, normal i cut this about 80% less worry broken somethink, about 100mm/meter. up cut 6mm bit make lot horriple hairs to top of plywood.
