In this video, Master Woodturner Kirk DeHeer demonstrates the process of turning a traditional lidded box with a slip-fit lid.
In this video, Kirk describes how to choose the right material for making wooden boxes and continues on to demonstrate the process step-by-step. Throughout the video, emphasis is placed on how to make efficient cuts that produce great results. In addition, proper tool use, chucking the box while turning and recommended methods of sanding and finishing are thoroughly covered. As always, proper sharpening techniques are covered as well as sharp, properly ground tools are one of the keys to success in all woodturning.
By learning the fundamentals of box turning, you too can create beautiful, functional boxes of all shapes and sizes that you can enjoy every day! Like our Woodturning 101 students, we’re sure you’ll find this video to be enjoyable and informative.

You are an excellent teacher, Kirk! Seriously. Over the past 16 years, I've taken several turning classes and watched hundreds of hours of video on the subject. Your explanations and demonstrations are definitely among the very best. I'm so glad I found this one!

Mr. DeHeer, I have been searching for the negative rake box scraper that you use in this video and have not been able to find a match. If you could, please advise the manufacturer and where it might be purchased. Craft supplies doesn't seem to have it . Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Very informative! I wonder, is a roughing gouge the right tool for shaping of the outside? Seems a bit bulky and indelicate for doing this work. Wouldn’t a scraper work better, or maybe a skew?

Sorry but as a very experienced box turner I would never make a box that I hadn’t part turned maybe several times. Doesn’t matter how dry the wood was. Good box making is a slow process.

Are you saying this box will have issues down the line?
@ukcarver
@ukcarver 2 жыл бұрын
@@tylersmith9868 Yes it could have issues as when you hollow the box out you release tension in the wood. . But you need patience when box making. Always part turn boxes in advance.
