Hi my friends! In this video I turn this black walnut bowl using only carbide cutter tools, with square, round and diamond inserts, no gouges or other cutting tools.

This was very helpful. I've never seen anyone tilt the head of the cutter to get a finer shaving. That is a very nice technique to help some of the sanding that carbide cutters seem to need more of.

You can also roll the tool so you are cutting with the bevel. With the square cutter it is like using a skew. I have turned stuff with no tear out doing this. This also goes for the round cutter. I just adjusted my bar so it matched the angle of the cutter. If you think about it rubbing the bevel is the same as rubbing the bevel on gouge and turning the cutting edge into the wood.

Just what I was looking for. I have never turned and only recently purchased my first lathe. I don't have a sharpening system yet (or the skills to sharpen) so it looks like starting out with carbide will be a better option for the time being. The extra details you provided in the video are really helpful for people like me who are just at the beginning of their turning journey.

Hi Ed! Thank you for your comment my friend! I am glad the video was of help. Carbide tools are a good place to start, they are intuitive and give you a feel for some of the woodturning parameters. Later on, you can begin trying with cutting tools like gouges and skew chisels. It takes more practice, but the start with the carbide tools will allow you to have a faster learning curve! Cheers! Daniel, that is a very nice little bowl. Great demonstration of the carbide cutters. You are the first person that I have seen to raise the handle to create a negative rake of the carbide. I have tried it in the past myself. I didn't think there was much improvement in the cut when I tried it. Your finish is very good. It sure brings out the color and figure of the walnut. I do not know if the trick works all the time, there are many variables that affect the out-of-the-tool finish in scrapers and in carbide cutters: Lathe speed, angle of attack, and probably the most important, sharpness of the cutter. Ah! And also the type of wood, these inserts seem to work better on harder material. If you raise the handle, remember to have the toolrest close to the piece, you want to have leverage. And do not take too much wood, in these inserts lighter works better. Cheers! Daniel

@@DanielVilarino I sometimes will rotate the round carbide cutter so it is 45 degrees from horizontal. Sometimes that works as a cutter rather than a scraper, and sometimes that gives a better finish. Like you said, there are so many variables...

Hi John! Thank you, my dear friend, for watching the video and for your comments. I think carbide cutters are a great way to get into wood turning, and for many people, they decide to follow that route without using what typically are known as cutting tools. As most things in life, when you compare carbide cutters vs gouges and skew chisels and similar cutting tools, you get advantages and disadvantages. The way the carbide cutter operates means that it may leave a rougher surface (particularly in areas close to the end grain). On the other hand the learning curve for using them is pretty fast. Sharpening is something important for all tools, but getting to sharp gouges and chisels correctly may be more difficult than rotating a carbide insert to expose fresh cutting edges, replacing a cutter or even sharpening them. So, in that sense, carbide cutter may also have an advantage, but, the surface out of the cut of a cutting tool will probably require less sanding and because their techniques are more difficult to master, you are more prone to catches. All in all, if you can, it is always convenient to try to master as many woodturning tools as you can, but, at the end of the day, what gets you the best results is the best tool for you. When I started turning, I used mostly scrappers and carbide cutters, and they still form a part of my arsenal, although nowadays I do most of my turning with gouges and chisels. For some purist woodturners, carbide cutters are a no-no. But I think that is a too harsh point of view. What is important is for you to have fun in a safe way. Cheers! Daniel

I usually use my carbide cutters for finishing work, but it's good to know they can be used alone to make very attractive vessels. Just watched this video and was impressed by the quality of the cut using the carbide cutters and your technique. Still consider myself a beginner and have more experience with traditional chisels, but will be beginning to use cutters also. Very well done. Mark Mrsa

There is a lot of discussion regarding the use of cutting tools like traditional chisels and gouges and carbide cutters or other type of scrappers. Many advocates to one or the other. But I think each group of tools have their uses, and with good technique and patience you can pretty much obtain the same results. Of course, traditional cutters, in some applications will leave a wood surface that will require less sanding, and there are some situations, like working the inside of a hollow form, where carbide cutters really excel. Thank you for this video. I am very new to turning and my couple experiences with traditional tools has been a disaster thus far. I ordered a set of carbides and am just waiting for them to come in the mail so I can get restarted with some confidence and actually get something done. Other videos talk about how terrible the finish cuts are, but yours came out beautiful, even before the sanding.

Hi my friend, thank you for your comments and for watching the video. And welcome to the world of wood turning! The trick with carbide tools is to use them sharp, and it is quite easy to sharpen them, I have a video showing how: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q75jiLyalb7Me2g.html If the carbide cutter is sharp and you do not become too ambitious with the depth of cut, they actually can do a good job. Of course, the type o wood and the degree of dryness of it, affects the situation. And the direction of the grain as well. If the piece is too wet (green) carbide cutter may not cut as well, if it is too dry, they may generate a lot of dust rather than shavings. If you turn end grain, that area can generate problems. But they are a great way to start turning, the learning curve is fast and later you can start with more experience at the lathe, you can experiment with the cutting tools, like gouges and skew chisels. Well done and narrated very well. I am starting with carbide because the cost of traditional tools and sharpening equipment was over twice the cost of the carbide. I will get into traditional tools at some point because they are more versatile and simply cut better. Hopefully, at some point I'll be able to use both traditional and carbide tools depending on what I'm making and how I'm feeling!

Hi Max! Thank you so much for your nice comments and for watching the video. I started that way. The carbide cutters are pretty intuitive and do not require, as you say, much in terms of sharpening and also cutting techniques. You can do pretty good work with them. The cutting tools, gouges, skew chisel, etc. do leave a nice surface and probably can save you some time sanding the piece, since you will probably start with a higher grit, but they do require care and keeping them sharp and sharpen often while working, so that's the trade off. And to acquire the cutting techniques takes some time, practice and above all patience, because at the beginning, things will not work the way you want, and you will have catches, but little by little, when you get better in doing it, the results are really good. I must have missed this one, Daniel. Very informative on using carbide tools. I like carbide tools since they are easier to turn wood when first starting out. But, they do have their limitations on the quality of finish if they are not used correctly. The tool needs to be used at high rpm to be effective. At lower speeds, tool marks become a problem and cause more sanding . Great bowl!!! Adios compradre!

Yes, carbide tools have their uses, and they work really well with compact dense materials, sometimes better than cutting tools like a gouge, and they can be a life saver with wood that it is extremely dry. I have had pieces that would blunt my gouges after a couple of minutes, and I was able to rough with carbide tools, and then do the finishing touches with gouges. And, they can be sharpened, which is nice to save yourself a few bucks. I hope everything is going well in this particular situation, keep yourself and yours healthy! Cheers! Daniel

Hi my friend! Yep! you got that right, hahahaha! I prefer the traditional gouges and use them most of the time, but carbide tools are great for people starting in woodturning and still have a lot of uses for experienced turners! Cheers! Daniel

I have been in the States for almost 28 years, but in my country of origin, Uruguay, we have a lot of eucalyptus. It was used a lot for forestation and to desiccate wetlands. We have there red and white, so I guess they must be the same species that the red and white gum. I have memories from chilhood, going to the parks in Montevideo with my parents and brothers and picking up the seeds and the leaves. And I love the smell... Good memories. Cheers! Daniel

Hi my friend, I hope the video is of help. Carbide tools work as scrapers, so they have some advantages and some disadvantages when compared to typical cutting tools like gouges and skew chisels. On the positive side their learning curve is shorter, you can begin turning pretty soon with carbide tools, and many woodturners begin to do their first jobs with this type of tools. On the negative side I would say the finish out of the tool is not as good as a cutting tool and they will require more sanding and starting sanding with coarser grits. Although I use gouges and skew chisels for most of my turnings, I still use cutting tools for some things and their use does not require so much technique as cutting tools (I guess the word I am looking for is that they are more forgiving). Use carbide cutters below center on the outside and above center on the inside to avoid catches.

I was always use to traditional gouges and hated the thoughts of using carbide cutters. I decided to give carbide cutters a fair chance. I discovered carbide is much cheaper and found I can turn anything with carbide cutters and the beauty is the same if not better. I discovered I love my carbide cutters and don't plan going back to traditional cutters. I can also sharpen my carbide cutters and they will cut as good as new ones. I was tired of spending more and more money on traditional cutters and going deeper in the hole just for a hobby. Now after buying a few carbide cutters I figure it will be two years before I consider buying more carbide cutters. Good bye traditional cutters!

Yes, many woodturner find that the can do most work with carbide cutters and since you can re sharpen them easily, they last a lot of time. Good video. Can you comment on the benefits of the negative rake carbide cutters for finishing? Are they really better?

Hi Eric, Thank you very much for your comments. I have answered a couple of other comments regarding negative rake scrappers and carbide cutters, let me put a part of one answer here: I have not tried yet the negative rake cutters. If the regular ones are sharp, they cut very nice. And if needed I can do the negative rake by raising a little the handle. In general I use bowl gouges or regular scrapers, I have the set up to sharpen them easily and a regular scraper when freshly sharpened leaves a great surface. Now, I suppose the negative rake would make the cut softer, and if it is really sharp should probably work well. But, as I said, I do not have much experience with them. Cheers! Daniel

@@DanielVilarino Negative rake scrapers are used with the handle parallel as you would use a standard cutter. Negative rake scrapers in use work the same as lifting the handle so the cutter is below centre and scraping. From what I found the negative rake scrapers for some reason are generally more expensive!!

Hi Sean! Thank you, my friend, for watching the video and for your comments. Regarding your questions, yes, they are Easy Wood Tools. I used the full size easy rougher and round carbide cutters. I also have the Easy Hollower pro (the straight the small curve and the full curve). Finally, I have not tried yet the negative rake cutters. If the regular ones are sharp, they cut very nice. I find that carbide tools are very intuitive to use, you do not have to worry about bevels, and many other factors that are pertinent to gouges. The trade off is the quality of cut, but if you do not mind a bit of extra sanding, that is not a big problem. Cheers! Daniel

Question: You use your home made abrasive wax first and then a bottle you label as “friction polish” last. What is in the friction polish? Thanks!

Hi my friend! Thank you for your comment and question. That is correct, the friction polish is a mixture that contains three components, boiled linseed oil, denatured alcohol and shellac. Each component approximately the same amount in volume. The shellac I use is Zinsser Shellac, which is approx a 3 pound cut, but you can do the mixture with a two pound cut as well, I just used Zinsser because I had it already. If you buy the flakes you can do either a 2 or 3 pound cut, the difference is that the friction polish with more shellac will cover more quickly, but may be a bit more sticky than the lighter mixture, that will go on the wood easier, but will require more coats. It is a bit difficult for me to say, because to the actual turning time, I use a lot of time moving cameras around for filming the video. But I would say that depending on your level of expertise and the preparatory work or lack of thereof, it may take between 25 minutes and 90 minutes. This is a relatively small bowl and was done exclusively using scrapers, so tools you use, size, techniques, etc. will all affect the time. For example, if you pre-cut in a bandsaw the blanks, and you do that by the lot, you end up saving time and then you have advanced a lot in the process everytime you start a new turning. Cheers! Hola! Nadie te obliga a ver el video en inglés, puedes hacerlo en español si te molesta mi acento. Por eso siempre pongo enlaces en la descripción para que el que quiera lo pueda ver en el idioma que desee. Aparte de eso, es un esfuerzo bastante grande realizar videos en dos idiomas, y si bien reconozco tener un fuerte acento, los suscriptores de habla inglesa nunca se han quejado y entienden perfectamente lo que digo. Más bien, antes de hacer una crítica destructiva, pues las constructivas siempre son bienvenidas, me fijaría en cómo escribo en mi propio idioma. La palabra "Esté" de tu comentario, está mal acentuada. El tilde va en la primera "E" y no en la segunda. Esté es una conjugación de verbo estar, este sin acentos es un demostrativo para señalar algo nombrándolo, y éste con acento en la primera "e" es un pronombre demostrativo que se usa sin mencionar al sujeto.
