I often get questions about the finish I use. This is my favourite. It's cheap and easy to make and gives a beautifully, natural finish. If you combine it with a bit of turning - it makes a lovely present. The polish is also good for shoes. I use olive oil so it's not food safe.

Great boxes Jon, the grain and spalting are fabulous. Yes, olive oil can go rancid and the deterioration of it starts the moment the oil is pressed out of olives. If you want a 'food safe' finish, use a seed oil like Grape seed oil or avocado oil as these do not go rancid. Olive oil, when kept in a sealed container, slowly deteriorates, but when exposed to air the decomposition of the fatty acids with air increase greatly, hence why the finish may get an odour after a while and mould can also form on it if the moisture content of the wood is too high or the humidity of the area of it being stored is high (plus the other factors of heat, air circulation and so on). Thanks for sharing and stay safe, Keep on turning. Cheers, Bluey 👍

Hi Bluey, would the ratio of oil to bees wax be the same if you used a different oil like grapeseed oil?
@BlueyPastle
@BlueyPastle Жыл бұрын
@@JK-ep9bz yes and no. The quality of all ingredients and how clean and/or filtered is everything. But, in saying that, they would not be much different.

Lovely video. I was about to query the use of Olive Oil but I see Bluey has posted an excellent explanation of this.

Looks very good. And why is Olive Oil not food safe? Isn't that used for cooking all the time? Looks a bit thick still though. I would prefer to have it a bit more fluid. More Olive Oil? 😁

Hi Leo. Nice to hear from you. I think there is a problem that the olive oil might go a bit rancid around food. Yes I think it might be better to increase the olive oil until you get a consistency you are happy with. I don't know the exact science of it - I think its trial and error but certainly worth experimenting.
