This gnarly looking log is from a Sissoo (Indian rosewood) tree that was cut on 10-18-23. These trees are actually quite invasive in residential landscapes and their roots will destroy concrete in patios and pools. A friend was having 2 large trees taken out of his backyard so I "volunteered" to take the logs off of his hands. Lucky me! The heartwood is absolutely gorgeous and the sapwood is a creamy color. I decided to turn this one with a natural edge.
I am very committed to being environmentally responsible and 65% of my shops electricity comes from my home solar panel system. I also transport all the raw logs in my electric vehicle. I rarely pay for wood for turning projects since there is plenty of local wood that I can use that would otherwise end up in the landfill. I enjoy making art from what would otherwise be trash.
I am a relatively new wood turner, so I'm still working on my technique and make plenty of mistakes! All woodworking can be potentially dangerous, so you should not try anything you see me do without instruction. My videos are for entertainment purposes only. I do wear gloves when turning as I have very painful arthritis in my hands and the gloves support my joints. In general, it is not recommended to wear gloves around power tools like this, but this is how I do it.

Nice job! Very beautiful bowl. I’m a big fan of Kent’s channel as well as Phil and Papa47. These three channels taught me so much after being away from turning for literally decades. As a camera operator and videographer for 40 years, I also very much appreciate your clean pictures. Very well done! Cheers, Rick

Thank you for the kind words! I'm still trying to improve my camera work and I need some better lights. I had a really bright light but it broke a while back and I need to replace it. Sometimes I just want to focus on the turning and all the camera work slows me down. I've turned several bowls recently without filming so now I'm motivated to film another one.

@garytompkins3761 Thanks! I have to confess I did not do Kent's online courses. I just watched his public videos, and that was enough for me to learn from basically zero experience.

I have one blank of Indian Rosewood sent to me by a friend in Arizona. I bet Phil would not mind a piece from your stash, especially if it is really gnarly! BTW, a jam chuck holds wood without tail support, but a pressure chucking holds wood using tailstock support. Like you, most of us find pressure chucking much faster than taking time to turn a jam chuck. Nicely done, looking forward to more videos from you.

You should definitely turn that blank! They heartwood is really amazing. I would love to share this wood with others and I've been thinking about sending Phil a blank or 2. You are correct about the jam chuck. I got lazy with my terminology! Thanks for watching!

Thanks! A decent lathe is a big investment and definitely an obstacle. Space to store logs/blanks can also be a problem. You only need a few tools, but to make turning easier, there are some things I bought that were definitely pricey. That said, if you can swing the initial investment, it is so much fun and not that hard to do the basics. I'm still working on improving but it just takes more practice.

I have been watching Kent for years and I see you used his idea of hanging a tarp behind you to control the shavings. Beautiful bowl reminds me of a very large table my father made from "monkey pod" he brought back from Hawaii back in the 50's. Very hard as you said but the finish will last forever. My table is 79 years old and never needed refinishing. Phil from shady acres is also a treasure.

You are absolutely right about me stealing Kent's tarp idea! I have a CNC machine right across from my lathe and it used to get absolutely covered in chips. I still need to tweak it a little, plus the blue tarp looks kind of messy on camera. I really love turning the Sissoo, but the dryer the blanks get the harder the turning. The pores are so tight that it finishes like glass. Thanks for watching!

Thanks Gavin! I know Sisso probably doesn't grow in the UK, but are the import regulations also a problem? I just recently saw that this wood might be on a list with restrictions since it is part of the "rosewood" group of species. This stuff is literally a weed in the Phoenix area so I don't have issues with using it since it grows right here. It's so bad that the guy that cut down these 2 trees for my friend ONLY does removals of this species. You have to do a special process to kill the stumps so they don't come back and destroy your concrete. When I run low, I'll just contact him to hook me up with another tree or 2. I wish I could send you some! The kittens are a joy!

The wood is Sissoo which is also called Indian Rosewood. The logs I have are still kind of wet and still drying. The ends are coated with a wax sealer to help prevent cracking. Once I finished turning it, the bowl was almost completely dry due to the dry weather conditions here in Arizona, USA. Thanks for watching!

@@FRBPturning Спасибо большое.! Ваша сиссо похожа на яблоню, только не дикую, а сортовую. У неё сердцевина тоже тёмная, темнее чем у сиссо, а оболонь белая. Ваши работы прекрасны,
