Ok, so bare with me, my brain don't work so good at finding the words to express how I feel, especially when I love something so much, like this, so here goes... This vase is incredible. From the burl itself, with it's detail and splender to the choice of colour for the resin. Even the shape of this piece is perfection. I'd have this as a family heirloom, this would be a prized possession. The kind of possession that needs a pedestal, a spinning pedestal to showcase it's beauty. I have watched this video, in all it's 53minute splender, several times. For me, this is your finest work, a masterpiece that I would be honoured to have in my home. Whoever has it, I am highly jealous and a little upset that I don't have it. I'm not even going to pretend to be able to afford to buy something like this, in fact I'd barely be able to afford one of your tiny dishes. Whoever has this, please look after it or feel my wrath. Bravo Jim, bravo 👏👏👏 sterling work. I hope I got across that I have a tiny crush on this vase 😐❤😻

Gorgeous vessel - charge a mint because of beauty as well as all the involved work. One tip - instead of marbles try sand. Foundry sand is the best. If you fear leakage, mix a small amount of oil with the sand which makes it much more possible to chip it out if epoxy infiltrates to packing.

I think that's a good idea. Maybe a spurt of non stick spray after the liner is in, before the sand?? I know there's cookingspray, but is there a similar product for woodworking, etc?? WD 40??

Gorgeous piece! The wood grain is so beautiful and the resin enhanced it. I’m left handed too, there are many things that just aren’t made for us.. but, we adapt. I’m thankful that when I started school they’d finally figured out that forcing kids to be right handed was not a good idea.

@@SpragueWoodturning anyone in australia over the age of 55 knows this all too well. I was so left handed I just couldn’t manage it other than batting right handed . A daily caning from the teacher was all too familiar for us lefties. ( I was told by one male teacher in grade 3 that I needed the devil caned out of me)😳😬 looking back I think he enjoyed it far too much 🧐😖 I often wondered if this is why many of our generation are ambidextrous as we started out left handed.

The figure of the burl is so beautiful that it would stand on it's own. The addition of the deep blue and the gold is icing on the cake. The finished bowl looks like it belongs behind glass as artwork in the lobby of an expensive office building. Congratulations and thank you very much! And kudos to your son. On another note, I suspect that the lawyers dictated the removal of any safety claims from the GF Bowl Finish containers. From what I've read in the general press, here in the States, by law any finish when cured must be non-toxic. (One source of info: "Food-Safe Finish Considerations" by Amy Costello in Fine Woodworking Magazine Jan 2019) That doesn't mean a company can't be sued anyway, the legal system being what it is. "Nuisance lawsuits". Someone commented elsewhere that maybe the formulation hasn't changed. I wouldn't be the least surprised if that were true.

It’s totally a liability thing for sure, great info, thank you so much! Another subscriber above who’s a chemist looked at the SDS sheet and said when the wood bowl finish of fully cured its food safe, thanks again, Jim.

When you hollow out bowls or vases, keep your cutter just above center so while you are cutting if something snags the cutter will drop away just a hair and this will stop most of the chatter. You just need to find the sweet spot. Love this video too, keep turning.👍👍👍👍

One of the most detailed videos I have seen in ages. Thank you for showing the true process with struggles and not one of these half baked videos that makes it look so easy. When I was still a beginner and had struggles I thought I was doing something wrong since most of the videos made it look so easy and flawless. Had to learn the hard way that resin and wood combined is not always an easy job. Still worth the struggling though

I truly enjoy watching you work. The process I think is the most enjoyable part. The search the experiment the success and the concern about possible failures is what makes your projects really. I have yet to hear you say anything negative. You seem to have fun and enjoy yourself throughout the entire learning process. This vase with all of its colors especially the wood and then adding the gorgeous resin colors made the project just playing "Pop"! But like I've said before, the most important part is that you have fun throughout the entire process. This project was beautiful before during and after. You create a wonderful mystery novel. You had me on my toes a couple of times... I was so worried it might break or cause you an unsolvable problem. Thank you again for allowing me alone such a wonderful Expedition and experience. The end result was amazing! Carolyn

@@SpragueWoodturning seems like a huge legal issue for them. probably is "food safe" for the most part, but it limits their liability in the event someone does the things they listed. i suppose if they had a department that did ALL of those tests they could get behind their product more but you can never guess the ways in which people might mis use, abuse, mis apply their product. good luck finding another product

When i first started watching i wondered how you'd fill in the vase before pouring resin. I had the idea of a balloon. It would have to be heavy duty but i wonder how that would do in the pressure pot. Put a heavy duty balloon in the void and then inflate it. The heat from the resin might pop it... just brainstorming here. Lol
@SpragueWoodturning
@SpragueWoodturning 3 жыл бұрын
This has been discussed extensively in the comment and we’ve come to the conclusion that the balloon will shrink when pressurized. Then you’ve got a real mess, lol.

You can use the hollow cut pieces as lamp bases! 🤔 Tiffany lamps show off the shade, put a small 40w LED inside with a two way switch and you have a STUNNING $1,000.00 lamp! 💝 Make a black walnut cap. Thread the rod through and TADA!🥳

Ingenious. Are you going to patent this' marbellous' method? I love your channel because you are always pushing the envelope and your pieces are always great. I am in no way as experienced as you, but I do have some ideas, not criticisms, as I too want to improve and hope meet your standards. Maybe a water filled bag would give a smoother surface.. I am in process to convert my laser to a camera, which will project the position of the tool onto a TV screen while it is inside the bowl. You could could put a riser block on the laser (camera) so it rises above the steady rest. Tripoli is good but try the white diamond afterwards. It puts a much finer glossier finish. I've recently switched to walnut oil and/or Mahoney's oil for the inside/outside of salad bowls, and a shiny finish on the outside of some of them. Walnut oil is 100% food safe, and easily repairable by the customer. You can mix it with beeswax if you want. My customers seem to really like it. A salad bowl is after all a utility item and the oil is a great finish for all utility items, salad spoons/forks egg cups etc etc. etc.

The reason some people are shocked at the prices of your products is they have no real life experiences that can relate to what you’re doing. You have mastered not one but two skills and added an artistic flair most people don’t possess. I’m not saying your prices are easily affordable for most people.
