I didn't realize that working with epoxy was as time consuming as it is. You are right. I have three times the effort in a wood and resin bowl. But, it is a piece of art and for me, turning is a hobby. That is a great looking bowl and you gave me a few good ideas.

The bowl is amazing. It is good to seee that you also make "mistakes" when pouring. The colors work well together and it really like the black ring around the bowl. It brinss it all together

Oh man, I feel for you. There is no worse feeling than having a part not release initially. For context, when we do tool prep in the aerospace world we have to get the part surfaces absolutely squeaky clean and then polished and then cleaned again. We don't take them to a mirror finish, but they are headed that way. All to deny the epoxy any chance of getting any kind of mechanical bond to the metal. Then the release agent (or agents) go on, usually two coats for a tool that is already coated, more like six for a new tool. I am so glad you didn't have to sacrifice the pressure pot. Also, hot damn those things look amazing. Beautiful work as always.

I’m still a little shocked how the resin bonded to the paint so well, it was like I never sprayed the pot at all with the release agent! Thanks 🙏

@@SpragueWoodturning If I had to guess, I think that paint saved your butt. If the epoxy had gotten ahold of the steel you could have hit that thing with a train and it wouldn't have popped. Wish I had some pictures of times where release agent has either fully or partially failed during an autoclave cure, an ~1/8 inch carbon fiber laminate will take a 1/4 inch steel plate and bend it like a Pringle.

Fantastic sci-fi look. Mould release is used on moulds with relief angles that are not any deeper than they have to be. I have never tried this, but it seems like a good way to keep things from floating in the pressure pot is to put a piece of plywood wrapped in cellophane tape with a piece of 2by4 attached which has been cut to length such that when the pressure pot lid is screwed down only a minimal clearance is left between the 2by4 and the inside of the lid. The 2by4 could be made in two pieces that allow length adjustment.

Glad you did not have to destroy the pot to get the blank out. When you poured directly into the pot, I knew you would take a lot of effort to get it back out. But you managed to get it out without destroying either the blank or the pot. That extra resin soaked into the open pores that walnut has. Maybe maple would be a better choice next time (harder, denser). Definitely entertaining to watch you create the two bowls.

I love the colors, as you say personal taste, but I think if this was done again with earth tone type colors you would end up with something that looked like a rock with loads of intrusions pushed through through it, which would be a touch more subdued and also beautiful. And the resin pushing into the wood would look fantastic with those colors as well.

I am fairly new to this channel. I can say that, so far, I have never seen you take on a more complicated project. I don’t know how you can imagine what it will look like when you are done. It was also very entertaining. Putting it out in the snow, putting it upside down on props - it was amusing what all you went through to get it loose. One of my favourite parts in your videos is watching you struggle to get it out of the mold. I also like seeing you covered in epoxy shavings. This was a huge project and I really enjoyed this video. Beautiful pieces once again. It was well worth the extra time you put into it.

I love this look! I'm not personally a fan of this specific colour combo, but I would love to see this technique used with your Peacock colours! It would be great fun to see you exploring this technique in different ways should you wish to in the future. I think it would be interesting to see how more "precise" geometric cuts mapped out with a compass or something would look compared to the more relaxed freehand lines, though I don't know if that would look too rigid with this style. Maybe a piece of wood with a really defined knot or 2 to base the cuts around would be a fun project to experiment with! As always, stunning work 💜

Entropy resin with a slow hardener from Composit Canada (Close to the Toronto airport), you can do a deep pour without a pressure pot. Works really well with no air bubbles. Only problem is the 3 days to harden. Love the bowls!

Nice idea, I prefer more classic styles but why not, it's nice to try new things! If you need to keep the pieces spaced evenly, maybe you should just go the extra mile to glue them on a base before pouring the epoxy. Also, glad to see your opinions on mistakes and possible routes, always entertaining AND educational. Keep growing!
