Woodturning: I Think I Need A Bigger Lathe! 😧

Thank you so much to all of you, and thank to all my new subscribers! This is my 17th video project, and it was quite a doozy. The yellow birch log had been harvested about a year and a half ago, but in spite of scoring the bark to prevent rot damage, the wood was very punky an almost impossible to finish. I fully expect it to check and crack, given the pith inclusion, but this piece is meant to be rustic. Between finishing the piece and taking the video montage at the end, I let the base soak in mineral oil for about 3 days until I noticed that the piece no longer floated to the surface of the oil. I did so because I noticed some dry spots on the finish where the wood was soaking up the oils and wax quickly. Once this piece settles out, I will apply an final coat of wax to help seal the piece and protect the finish.

That sucks that you lost the live edge, but you created a beautiful bowl. No one would know it wasn't the original plan of you hadn't shared that with us. But I'm grateful you did, problem solving and perseverance are great qualities. It's a great lesson when I show videos like this to my kids.

From the moment you pointed out the bark in the tenon I was on the edge of my seat waiting for tragedy. That is my worst fear. (Flying wood). Nice save and recovery of the piece. Sometimes the wood tells us what it's going to be. Nice work.

My Father was a machinist, I grew up in his machine shop. When I wasn't helping directly I was standing out of the way just watching. I get some of those same familiar feelings of awe and admiration watching your videos. Great choice of music as well, but it's the spinning of the lathe and the tooling on wood that brings the Zen. Hi David, I'm 'next door' in NS in the Annapolis Valley across the Bay of Fundy. I'm about to get into woodturning in my elder years. Yesterday, a salesman at a machine store in Halifax, who said he's been a turner for more than 40 years, suggesting putting a 2" X 10" on the shelf below the bed, then loading it with 1500 lbs of sandbags to dampen the vibration from out of round wood pieces. You have that empty shelf on your Jet, so it may be a very inexpensive option, before springing for a new machine. Another suggestion from me is to create on the bandsaw, a simple circle jig with a piece of ply or MDF, and a central line at 90° inline with the teeth. Drill a hole for a 3" or 4" nail as a turning fulcrum and spin the blank 'round that, which, will eliminate much of the wobble and shorten the time to rough down the blank. Many holes can be drilled and the distance labelled for re-use. I also viewed a Danish video where the turner was using an old refrigerator as a kiln, heated with an incandescent 100W lightbulb, slatted shelves to hold blanks, [both rough turned to 1" and unturned] two 3" holes at the bottom with 1/4" ply covers for air inlets and a hole at the top again with a 1/4" ply cover on a single swivel screw, to let the moist air out, once the blanks have been equalized for 10 days or so. He also drilled a small hole for the light cord. I guess when you have little money, inventiveness is the mother of curiosity. hahaha I absolutely love your work, how it's presented in the videos, with the accompanying music, explanations, finishing materials etc. Keep up the great work. I have never used a lathe and I'm not good at using wood apart from basic stiff like an architrave but hardly the work of an artisan. Thank you for uploading this. To seeds gifted craftsman, an artisan make,something so beautiful is amazing. It is a good and wholesome thing to watch. So much depressing thing in the world and negative activity but you made something and shared it with the world to see. Things well made and made with love skill and passion is so good.

In turning things happen for a reason! The tenon mishap made it necessary to adjust the live edge and I think the shape fits the piece of wood! For all the troubles it threw your way you overcame and still produced a gorgeous piece! I love that finial! Thanks for sharing! Mert

David Adamsen I understand the plight. I have a river birch pedestal bowl I’m struggling with right now. I only cut it 6-8 months ago and it’s nowhere near dry, but dang if it hasn’t started to rot away!!

Wonderful piece of work , and love the Blackwood finial really does finish it off . When a piece flies off the lathe some people give up on it . Just goes to show if you don’t give up on it , the rewards you can get when it’s finished .

I have never seen yellow birch before. It is quite beautiful. I mourned the live edge but the bark inclusion is awesome. You still made a magnificent bowl. I like that you share the turning in its entirety as we see your talent abound even in mishap. The intricacies are outstanding. You are blessed with an incredible talent.

Also yes, you need a larger lathe - it makes quite a difference with the added weight and speed control. I love my powermatic 3520b (and hear the new C is great), but if I could get anything now it would be either a robust or vicmarc

All I can say is wow. That is beautiful. I dont know why you get thumbs down except they cant make the beautiful stuff you do. I hope you get a bigger lathe so everyone can really see how talented you are. I would love to own one of your master pieces. Great job. Dont worry about the thumbs down they are just haters that cant do what you can. Thanks for your videos. I aspire to be at least half as go as you.
