Woodturning - In this video, I combine two maple burls with Designer Epoxy to make this awesome hollow form. This piece presented a ton of problems, so I hope you all can learn from my mistakes! As always, please like and share, thanks!

Beautiful, as always! I'm a periodontist and dental implant specialist. So many of our colleagues only show the cases that were successful, making the rest of us feel like we're doing something wrong. Showing your mistakes is better for everyone. First, it shows you're human. Second, as others have said, we learn from it all. God bless.

What an awesome vase you have once again created. You are so correct, these more intricate, high end pieces can be hard to sell because of their final production costs but I am truly confident you will sell this one and all your future creations because they are true works of art. Bravo and please keep pushing the boundaries of your talent for us to enjoy.👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Absolutely stunning. How could you ever bare to be parted from it? Again you have produced a video which is both entertaining and very informative - you don't attempt to hide or gloss over any mistakes or problems but work through them and explain the whole thing so that should we have anything similar happen, we can hopefully work through them without consigning the piece to the bin.

I admire the way you solve problems "by the seat of your pants!" This project turned out beautifully. Personally, I rely on my Trend Airshield Pro. It is worth every penny of the cost, as it protects my aging respiratory system better than any other combination of face shield & respirator. I even use it when operating my zero-turn mower.

@@brucemcgeehan8255The thermal reaction as the epoxy hardens can cause the balloon to burst. Fir these reasons, I have always preferred sand because it retains the shape desired and absorbs the heat from the epoxy curing.

Beautiful finished piece ... the high-gloss finish looks right for this. The shape and size of the foot is just right. I agree with @Leisongi Vangomo that a lid would be nice ... maybe the other piece you set aside because of how thin it is could be shaped into a lid ... just a thought. Have you thought of trying to use tape for a project like this instead of the bags-n-rice. Perhaps you could tape the outside and then pour the resin from the inside in multiple pours. Let each part cure enough not to run, rotate the piece and do the next pour. You might have to skip the pressure pot - but, if you used a vacuum chamber on the resin before you poured it should prevent most bubbles. It seems like that would take much less resin and way less work turning the inside. Let me know what you think
@SpragueWoodturning
@SpragueWoodturning 2 жыл бұрын
I totally follow you, but there’s a good chance of leaks doing it this way and very time consuming as well. I really want to use the pressure pot at all costs, it will push the resin into areas that it ordinarily wouldn’t flow and kill pretty much all bubbles. Sometimes things just need to be done the hard way. Thanks

Extremely well done Jim, you showed all of your talents with this piece that gave you problem at every step of the way. But you over came them all in the end and made a beautiful piece of art. Thanks for sharing the good and the bad so that we can all learn how to overcome issues like these.

Even though some unforced errors (that plastic bag was a beast) cost you some time the piece was so freaking nice! So worth the experience and learning process. I hope you do more of these projects since now you know what not to do and the project won't be so long and costly... loved this! Moving forward.... *no plastic bags!* 😄
@SpragueWoodturning
@SpragueWoodturning 2 жыл бұрын
Lol, the bag wasn’t the problem, the problem was the fact that I didn’t put wood pieces in the inside so the bag wouldn’t encroach into that area. I won’t make that mistake again. Thanks 😊

This a wonderful piece. Thank you for putting in the problems. It is illuminating to see how you work though them and save the piece. I also think you should always give the amount of time they actually take to make. Unless you are a turner you just don't get how much time it is! Especially when some of the video is in fast forward. I sometimes wish it could go that fast. Just getting the piece to the point to pour takes a lot of time. A really well done video and a gorgeous vase Jim.
