Good morning, Jim. I'm sorry for delay. As a new subscriber, I just came across this. With larger cones. Place them (standing together) in an oven at 220⁰F for 2 hours. Once cool, you will notice light colored powdery bits at the end of the "petals". This is the majority of the pitch left in the pinecone. Put your lightest, lightest brush on your bench grinder, and turn the pinecone to barely graze the out edge of the petals. This dislodges the pitch. Spray 'em off and have fun with 'em, my friend. Wish I came across your channel sooner.

Very nice!! I have been turning lidded pinecone boxes for awhile now. I use a different approach though. I cut the pinecones in vertical slices on the band saw. I put a wooden spindle in the middle of the mold to save on resin. I then line up the slices along the wall of the mold usually in two layers and then pour the resin in. Everyone loves them at the Craft shows. Give it a try!!

I don't think I've ever seen a pine cone that big... Certainly not in New England. Nice save with the 'wife approved' comment after the 'not really listening' comment. Actually laughed out loud.... Darling little box! The wife is right about the nob on the lid, fits perfectly. Reminds me of a Bakalite box from the 70's. Because is the natural skin on the pinecone petals, not sure if the vacuum chamber would have pulled resin into the pinecone. It's possible you have to take them off the center spine and glue them to a dowel.

I suggest breaking the barbs off and stacking them more narrow then putting them in resin, less resin, more pine cone. I think you’ll like the results.

The second bowl I turned was a bunch of pinecones in purple and silver resin. I put them in the oven ahead of time and it took a fair bit of pitch out. But I still had the same voids. I really liked how it turned out but yours is much better!!

I think what you want is a Coulter pine cone. We picked ours up roadside in Northern California between the coast mountains (highway headed east from Eureka) and Interstate 5 on the eastern end of the state highway. Very pitchy, but I have been told to bake them to make the resin drip off. About 6-9” diameter, semi solid, and very heavy. Those are the biggest (not longest) ones in N.A. that I have ever found. Lodgepole and Ponderosa have long, but skinnier cones.

Jim, This is a magnificent box using a pine cone. My brother collected a box full of pine cones off of his fir tree. One of these days I will have to order designer epoxy. All in due time.

As a wood turner we refer to these as boxes... and that is a beautiful job you did. Do you, fellow turners, get confused looks when you call them boxes? People always ask me what they are so sometimes I'll say lidded bowls to avoid the dumbfounded looks I get when I call a box, a box. The next question I always get is, "what can you put in it" lol Does anyone else experience this?

Well, Jim, you made a beauty! The emerald green resin goes so very well in this piece! Actually, looking down into the centre of the box, the distribution of colours reminds me of kiwifruit, with the dark seeds surrounded by emerald green flesh. Merry Christmas to you and yours!
