Useful tip: Sometimes the tool steel (gouge) may get stuck in the collet, and using manual force will not take it out. DO NOT use wrenches or other tools to release the gouge. Simply, TAP the bottom of the handle with your hand, or mildly drop the bottom of the handle on your workbench, or even lathe rails. In most cases a hand tap is enough, and the previously stuck gouge is released with no effort. Hope this helps. Great collet system. I have an aluminum handle for mine, made on my wooden lathe.

Very nice system Sam. Very nice looking handle. Ash is such a nice wood. I am in the process of converting all my handles to a collet set up too. I figure on 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch, maybe 5/8 too. That way I will have only 3 or 4 handles but as many tools as I need. It will save space on my tool wall.

Nice job on the handle. Seems like the part of the collet chuck that goes into the handle should be longer.

Great video but the jimmy Clewes quick release unit is a much better, quicker, and cheaper option than a collet unit.

Thanks for the comment. I did watch Jimmy's video on the "Doug Thompson" handle system along with a couple others: (Cindy Drozda also has a good video and system she sells). First I would really argue that The Thompson system is better. But then I have not seen it or used it. I believe the collet system IS better. With Jimmy's line of handle adapters you must buy 4 if you have 4 different size tool steel gouges. So you actually need 4 handles. These will cost over $200. So you will need one handle for 1/4" one for 3/8" one for 1/2" and one for 5/8" size. With the Robust tool collet handle system you do need 4 different size collets. I purchased a set of collets for around $25 which included every size I would ever need. (I bought these years ago and showed these in my video. When I demonstrate and I need to change a tool with a different collet, I have the matching collet simply taped to the tool steel. It does take 30 seconds more to change out the collet but I just need one handle. Another point as far as cost. Stewart Batty designed a collet handle (sold by woodworkers emporium in Vegas) which cost from $120 to 140 for the handle only-collets sold separately. I have two of these handles and these are high quality. Lots of options. Sam

WYOMINGWOODTURNER those are very good points. I only have two sizes and so have been able to use all my tools with just the two quick release units but if you have all 4 it would get pricey. The good thing is that you can use adapters on your tools so you don’t actually need to buy all 4. Woodworkers emporium is my closest woodworking store and so I am very familiar with Stewart’s option as well and have always wanted to try it out. At the end of the day, each option is great and is a good fit for a different person and so it’s just about find the option that works best for you. Keep up the great work and enjoy the new shop!

@@nicko5945 I demoed at the Woodworker's emporium 5 years ago and Christian gave me one of S. Batty's handles. (Yes pricey) but It really sold me on the collet system. Sam

GEORGE, I am on a trip now. I am away from my shop. My first reaction is that I don't think it would fit. I think you would need the larger size. Yep, here is a page from the Robust tool site. turnrobust.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Collet-Kit-with-notes.jpg It shows you will need the E-32 size for a 3/4" size tool and collet. Sam

"Buy the best; Cry once", is what my dad taught me. I am not a Robust driver yet, but have been saving my lunch money for a couple years now and putting up with my 1960s Powermatic 90. The old PM90 is a nice lathe, but is does not have the "creature comforts" or safety factors that Robust has engineered into their products.
