I love watching turning vids from around the world, seeing which equipment is the same as in the west and some that works totally differently. I think people overestimate the dangers on some of the techniques, other videos with loose open belt drives seem to show easy slipping so rather than causing dangerous catching or pinching injuries it probably stalls the piece, I've seen similar setups where the operator just grabs the spinning piece to stop it and remove it from the lathe without disengaging or stopping the mechanism. you scare me though with that table saw though, that thing will take some fingers, do you have access to a bandsaw? they are much less likely to kickback or drag you in as the blade is moving perpendicular to the wood.

Saw a demo some years back, the late and great Allen Batty. He was telling the tale of turning billiard balls out of elephant ivory. A couple of years process. They would use straight sided cylinders for a jam chuck. Nice job.

Guys it was obvious this was not in USA, so with no OSHA to intervene they have to actually think about their own fingers, rather than some bureaucrats in DC. I thought the trick was using the drill press to cut center down, and then to pot small bowl inside a larger wood Turning jig, to help hold the very thin turning without splitting. One might say that jig added a big margin of safety to prevent a split out.

Fascinating video, but, as a turner, the only 'trick' I've never seen is the toilet plunger jam chuck. He sure can handle a skew, which a lot of turners are a bit afraid of.

This isn't going to be the comments I originally intended to post. In fact, I changed my mind three times. My first comments were going to be just an echo over his misleading bait and hook ( "Wood Turning secret never seen before" ) title. I decided against it after reviewing portions of the video. I noticed that our young turner wasn't wearing any shoes, while turning ankle deep in wood chips. I made note of his shop made Lathe and Table Saw. I also took note of shop practices that would give insurance providers a fucking coronary! It was because of that fact that I realized I was looking at his video with the same modern, wood turner eyes as the rest of you. This kid doesn't have a fraction of what's found in the most common of our European or Western home shops! I'd also bet that this is NOT a hobby for him. It's how he eats, pays rent and clothes himself. If any of you would care to take a ride down the road to "Humble -Vill" click on the young man's avatar! What you will see in that link can't be taught. It's a gift that very few of us are born with. The Cape Buffalo he carved should be worth the cost of a Ferrari! MAGNIFICENT!!!!
