Wood Window Makeover

If you are into woodworking even just a little bit, mortising - the art of making square holes in wood, is an important topic to understand. In this video I introduce you to the Hollow Chisel Mortiser, basically an industry standard for the woodworking shop. It's useful for making sashes, tables, furniture, cabinets and a whole bunch of other things. It's also one of the easiest machines in the workshop to operate. I'll put new people on it all the time to let them get their hands dirty. So give it a watch and let me know what you think. What else would you want to know about this machine and what it does?

Hi Steve, thanks for the video. You must do hundreds and hundreds of mortices, I know the Accoya is probably easy on the bits, but do you sharpen the bits and chisels or just buy new ones? If you sharpen, do you have any tips on that? (BTW still waiting for the divided light video.)

I always have a backup bit, and theoretically, I'm always going to sharpen it for the next job, but almost never to. Then the drill bit gives out and I put the new assembly in. I haven't been able to purchase the drill bit separate from the hollow chisel. If I could, I'd probably sharpen more. About that sash making video, what kind of information would you be looking for? I always try to think of other people's perspective, but I'm not always sure what it is I'm taking for granted. A lot of it is muscle memory to me and I have to really stop and think through what I'm going to point out about what I'm doing.

@@WoodWindowMakeover You did a video "Method to Make a Sash" which was really good, lots of super helpful details. You also did another video "Inside Making True Divided Lite Windows" which was a quick overview of the divided lite process. I was hoping for a more detail video on a divided lite sash. I'm sure these videos take a huge amount of your time, and I am amazed how you do it all. Thanks again for sharing.

I'd really like to do more detailed video. One of the things I struggle with is knowing where to start and what to include. There's a lot I could cover, from getting the initial thickness and width right to where to put your mortise chisel in relation to where you put your mark. Might have to do a series.

Thanks for the video. You mention to buy power mattic bits for the powermattic but what about the Rikon machine?

Oh yeah, I guess I should say something about that. I've bought several bits through the years and pretty much all of the bargains are junk. The bits that come with the Rikon - borderline junk. They are good to get you started, but when they bend or break, and they will, replace them with Powermatic bits. The steel drill bit rubs against the steel hollow chisel and creates a lot of heat. That's what the WD-40 is for. Inevitably they overheat, and the drill bits break, even with the Powermatic. But the Powermatic bits are that high quality Japanese steel and last so much longer. The Rikon machine has different attachments that come with it that allow you to mount the Powermatic bits in them.

@@WoodWindowMakeover Thanks for the info, Steve. I understand the principle behind the WD-40, but doesn’t it get on the wood after you spray it? How often do you have to spray? Guess it depends on how many holes you are making?

I like to spray between holes. I usually forget until I hear the sound of the rubbing. Then I'm like, "oh yeah, I want my bits to last a bit longer, so I better give it a squirt."
