I have a small covered patio area with an outdoor sectional sofa and was in need of a coffee table for it. I thought it would be neat if I could design one that also had a surface that could be lifted up and inward to become an eating surface for those seated at the couch. I thought it would be even cooler if it was on a diagonal so that, regardless of where you were seated at the sofa, you would have easy access to the table surface. This is what I came up with and how I made it! If YOU'D like to build it for yourself, I'll have detailed step-by-step plans available for download on my website... so check it out!
Special Thanks to Zach Hipps from Byte Sized for all his time and patience while helping me with Fusion360. Please go and check out his content, subscribe to his channel, and tell him I sent ya! / zthipps

Thanks for watching! This was a challenging design and a fun build! I figured I'd take a moment and answer some of the questions that I've been getting here. Q: Is the top heavy to lift? A: Not since I used Cedar. Cedar is a very soft and light wood that is great for outdoor furniture because of its resilience to the elements. In this case, it was the perfect choice. If you build this out of a more dense wood, expect the top to be a little more challenging to open. Q: Aren't you afraid of accidentally bumping it closed when it's open? A: It's actually more difficult than you would think. The top pivots up and out, meaning that for it to close, it takes a lifting action. However, if you're concerned with it, you could use some of the left over 1" dowel and inset it into the support post with a mortise in the leg for it to lock into. Q: How sturdy is the table? Looks a little flimsy. A: It's a little wobbly as you deploy it, but once that support post is in position, it's stable. Obviously, you can't do handstands on it, but it will hold up just fine for dinner to be had. It's similar in sturdiness to one of those fold-up card tables that Grandma always uses at Thanksgiving for the kids to eat at. Q: Is there storage in it? You should have added storage. Why didn't you add storage? I could store things in it! A: Between the diagonal supports and the support post that hangs down from the table surface, the potential storage space is very minimal. Yes, you could add some slats across the bottom, but you won't be able to store a ton of stuff in it. Q: What did you use for finish? A: Thompson's transparent water seal Q: What program did you use to design it? A: Fusion360 Q: Is Fusion360 hard to learn?? A: Yes Q: Did you really put fish in the heating registers of your college dining hall? A: You better believe it!

A couple ideas for add-on's later, if you think they have any merit. Where the lift arm touches the top rail, a dent in each corner edge might appear over time. If that should start to happen, countersunk screws in each member at that point with the heads just touching each other, would prevent further denting and keep the top level (although the leg extension and V-channel will probably prevent that). Also, a full bottom spanning and resting atop the lower rails would provide some useful storage, for games, cups, mats, napkins, etc. (plus prevent spiders, wasps and other critters from finding a home under there). Anyway, well done! I'd make this, but I can't drive the Home Depot forklift yet. Maybe someday.... :)

You certainly could. Closing it requires lifting and pushing it so bumping it closed accidentally is unlikely. But a lock on there would definitely eliminate that possibility.
