Grow your woodworking business with "smalls"! Ready for part 4!?! Often, smaller items are looked over by new builders because they are looking for that one build that they can sell for a ton of money. They aren't considering the cost of the build and the time spent making it. In this video, I discuss the power of smalls. Ultimately any business comes down to profit margins. I'll give you a few examples of how selling items that anyone can afford can generate crazy sales with very little cost of goods sold!
Sometimes we overthink things when the most profitable items we are looking past. Let's change that.

I have found over the yrs......... large items mean more money on sales and more money on the build...... it also means more time on the build and more time on the sale because not everyone at the marketplace can afford large pricey items....... that being said at the end of a normal day I might sell one 1200.00 farm table or bed that will need to be delivered or changed to meet a color....... but I always manage to sell 800 to 1000 in smalls every weekend with no effort or sales pitch............ and most smalls are made with scraps !!!!!........ no such thing as a bad day selling smalls !!
@MatthewPeechWoodworking
@MatthewPeechWoodworking 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly!!! People don't realize the real cost of building a large nice item. Cost of material, time value of money (Your time is worth x amount), the build, the finish... And every day that piece hasn't sold is a day the your money is tied up. Sadly a lot of people will end up selling it for less just to move it. Smalls move!

Thank you Matthew, This morning , while walking my dog I spotted a pile of cedar fence lumber in an alley. It's old and weathered, with faded red paint. I thought "Gee, I should make something out of those boards." I came across your channel, and now I'm heading back to get those boards! I'll send a photo when I'm done.

Matthew, my wife and I resurrected my old table saw and are setting up our garage to be a wood shop. She is totally stoked to get a side hustle going, and we built our first planter box last weekend! Will send a pic later. We super appreciate the encouragement you bring to us and everyone else recovering from two years of Covid tragedies. Your mindset is desperately needed by so many. We have stocked up on piles of reclaimed lumber because she keeps an eagle eye on Craigslist free listings. We have torn down peoples old shelving, cut down trees rounds, even old ikea furniture that we are tearing down to build jigs. Anyone who can’t afford much to get started, just keep your eyes on free listings and eventually you wil score an occasional great find. Keep up the great work!!!

I do have an ample supply of wood. My backyard and my wonderful neighbor who runs a mill. He gives out firewood for free from cutoffs and only asks that we don't sell what we've received. I'm a newbie and have minimal tools. Your smalls projects are right up my alley. I live in Kentucky where people love old wood and cast iron. Thanks for all these ideas, and for being encouraging. I watched 3 videos last week, by guys, on building a small workstation for a portable table saw. One guy used not 1 but 2 FULL SHEETS of 7-9 ply cabinet plywood. That stuff is $220 a SHEET now. Pallet wood and pickets is more my style, repurpose and reuse where possible, thats what I like. I have a fence gate I have to rebuild, new wood will go into it, but I will reuse whatever is not rotten that comes out of it.

I just LOVE you. Your vibe is helpful, humble, and sincere. You have opened up a whole new world to me and are an answer to prayer. Besides family, there are three things I love spending my time doing and one of them is NOT my job as an RN although I am very grateful for being able to do it these past 15 years. I love building stuff, love planting everything, love spending time with my lab. I had an inkling that I might be able to make things that people would buy but your videos make that seem like a real possibility. You have created the machine for me basically. I have rolled my eyes a time or two when you get preachy but honestly, you’re not wrong. 😅 I’m really grateful to you and I’m going to figure out how to give this a go and maybe I can retire! I need very little money and I think this would fill in the gap. Love you Peech (motherly love)! I mean it.

Dang brother! I absolutely love watching your videos! You have a true calling for inspiring and encouraging people! As a matter of fact, this weekend I tried making two of the farmhouse style planter boxes. Only problem is, I only have a circular saw to rip the pickets down (no table saw). So... after about 4 hours spent of me basically free-handing, ripping 1 inch strips of pickets down, I had almost decided that this whole wood working thing may not be for me. But then low and behold, I get up Monday morning and watch your newest video and I'm inspired again! Keep on rockin' brother!

I had some paver work done recently and the guy doing the work offered to redo a section of my fence for me for cheap. He was going to finish the pavers up on a Friday and come back Saturday and do the fence. I don't work Saturdays so I was going to be here to tell him to set all the slats aside for me to keep. It turns out he changed his mind and hired some helpers and they got the pavers finished and the fence redone while I was at work on Friday. The bad part is I never got to tell him to set the slats to the side and they hauled all of that off to the dump. At least 50 well-weathered fence boards gone. I was so bummed I didn't notice how great the new fence looks 😂

The tree company gave me a date, then got done with another job early one day and came over, did our job and hauled away all the wood while we were working. We called immediately and he was able to bring some back from the person whom he dropped it off at, so all end well.

@6:06 with those ceiling lights, thanks to my previous company I was working for, I acquired a big piece of lumber. They were renovating the area where the harbour receives the ships. One of these big pieces of lumber are many years old and have the look there after. A awesome chuck of wood that I got for free, since my boss didn't have to worry about getting rid of it. The point here is, that companies you work for or any local companies, might have some unique pieces of wood laying around, just waiting to be thrown out.

The way I look at "smalls" is their importance can't be over stated. I don't have a 'gig'. To those who say, 'that's not my gig' , fine. Don't make them. But move over for those of us that are gonna make them. Go back to making your cool cutting boards with a with 110 glue-ups, that takes you 25 days to make, and you might be able to produce and sell 4 a month for $350.00 profit. I'll make twice that in 3hours on Saturday 😎 making my small quick stuff that keeps the bills paid. Thank you for continuing to motivate us.

I really liked when you mentioned people who say, that's not my style, that's not my gig.... we're in this to make products to make other people happy, and please others with our skills , it's not about what we want, as you said, anyone who only makes what they want, might make some money, but they're all about themselves, not others, so the little gains they find financially, are empty

If making smalls isn't "your thing," I get it; but keep in mind that selling Coca-Cola isn't really McDonald's "thing" either but they make a ton of money from it. You can always split your day to where you're building the things you like for some of the day and building the simple things that sell for the rest of the day.

Well said. And smalls really aren't my thing either. I just know the profit margins that go with them. Def diversify what you offer.

I've really been enjoying these smalls woodworking projects even though I have no intention of going into selling. The way you show a completed item and then discuss how to look at it to see it's component parts is a very useful way to think for any builder of any kind. One thing I would love is to see you do a video talking about the importance of building jigs and fixtures for batch work. Maybe you have already done this and I have just missed it. I have worked in industrial manufacturing for over 25 years and from what I have seen mistakes and injuries typically don't happen on the first or second go at a station. The injuries and mistakes usually happen once you start doing large numbers because people get complacent. A proper jig or fixture reduces effort, time and risk of injury.

Forty three years ago I made house signs. They were Western Red Cedar but they could have just as easily been made of boards salvaged from used pallets. A rubber stencil was applied to the face, a design was printed, a sewing perf-wheel was run over the pattern, and then pounced with a chalk bag. The design was then cut into the rubber stencil and the project taken to the sandblaster. They were a big hit. I also made a family crest about 4’x4’ with the street address in a banner across yhe bottom if the sign.

The sign was sandblasted & relief carved, then stained snd painted. About a ten hour project and the large family crest was stunning. My guess is that a large sign like that could today go for $2,500.

Your videos inspired me to start acquiring woodworking skills and getting into the wood business. First order of business is getting my first money back, since I bought a table saw, joiner/planer, and some other stuff. First im gonna make some cross-decorations for on the wall with scrap wood, I will try to sell it for 15/20 a piece if I make it look good. Anyways, 15 of these and I can already get myself some upgrades on my hobby. I'm also very interested in the planter boxes, but I think I'm gonna work on that in the autumn and winter so I will have a huge collection ready during next year's spring. Anyways, thanks for the tips and inspiration.
