Ok so this may be a touchy subject and will not apply to everyone. But for the most part you don't need a cyclone or even a filter for your dust collection system! I'll show you how to reduce drag and pressure so that your shop stays clean and you get the most out of your dust collector.

HI Matt, I am your target audience. Just setting up my wood shop in my basement and planning out the dust collection. I have a basement window with an exhaust fan because I weld in the shop too. I had not thought to exhaust the DC outside but that makes perfect sense. I appreciate and am enjoying all your content I have watched so far and will watch more. Thank you for taking the time to freely share your experience and insights.

I would put the motor just inside the building to protect it and avoid neighbor issues with it directly piped outside into a collection bin. Build a bracket to hold it up near the ceiling and out of the way.

Thanks for the wise use of your dust collector. My ong time friend owned his large cabinet business. He had lots of money in a 6 stack cyclone collector to protect employees. That was the daily source of problems and the shop was always covered in dust. Your idea to pump it outside is the brilliant and simple solution. Also a reminder that dust can be turned into pellets for heat. Working my way now to my own shop like yours for the same purpose. Working at home on the farm is my dream and goal. 🤠

Excellent description of the specs work. As an engineer I can say you are dead on right about how this stuff happens when standards aren't regulated. I seriously considered putting my 2HP DC outside when setting up my garage. Being in Michigan I heat my garage and that thing would completely replace my warm air in no time. I bit the bullet and custom integrated one of those expensive HEPA cannister filters and the airflow restriction is FAR less than that so-called 5 micron bag. If it wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg to reheat the air every time I turned on my table saw I'd be doing what you are.

Excellent video! Like yourself my new shop is out in the country so I will definitely be venting most my dust collection outside. It will not be running for hours on end and when it is running it will never be sucking out of more than 1 4” port at a time so I have no worries at all about sucking heat or ac out of my shop. Thank you for all of the excellent, informative and productive videos that you put the time into making and sharing.

Glad I watched your video, was close to spending $$$$ on a full cyclone and filter dust collector. Instead I rearranged my old Total Shop TS-110 1 HP dust collector that I bought for $50 on auction several years ago, made an insert for my sliding window and vented to outside. It is amazing. I previously had it hooked up to a chip separator and was losing tons of suction from that. I no longer need the chip separator, now I'm moving so much more air.

Agreed. Having a heavy wall to separate the noise from the shop is best. Adding phases to dust collection depends on the degree of separation you want. I accept some head loss to help protect the fan from large debris and collect the remainder. I beefed up the HVAC to handle internal airborne particulate. A portable fan/filter sure helps to be proactive

Being a part time woodworker for years and now being retire getting back to more full time work from making products to sell and maybe even creating content, I'm looking to get my HF system in a shed behind my garage. One I need the space (New/used CNC router has taken up a ton) and keeping those particulates outside is important. Just have so many projects to do to get there. Need to prioritize long term health over getting the business going.

Excellent points. I know I'm my high school wood shops. Each shop had it's own dust collection system and it all ported outside to a side by side set of dust bins outside way better for everyone that way. I'm working on buying a new property, and when I get around to building my wood shop. I'll likely implement some of your ideas there, way better to simplify the system, and remove the particles from the inside entirely

While this is accurate you are also venting all your heated or cooled air out of your building. If you have a standard 24x24 garage with 8 ft ceilings you roughly have 5,000 cubic feet of air. So if you have a 1,000 CFM dust collector in 5 minutes you would suck all your heated air outside and it would be replaced with cold air from outside. This would cause you to have to constantly heat your space. In the summer time because I don’t cool my space I vent my system outside and get the heat out but In the winter I need to push that air back into the garage to conserve the heat.

I’m in a wheelchair. So going outside around to the back side of my shop is difficult. I live in Kentucky also. My insurance company would not let me use pvc pipe because of static electricity. I had to use metal. I have a cyclone with a large filter. It does a great job and is easy for me to empty. Your system works for you. Mine works for me. Don’t show your system to your insurance agent or he might cancel your insurance.

Thanks for the idea. I was planning on getting some upgraded dust collection equipment and filtration bags but now I'm just going to keep using my Rigid shop vac. I'll just run it without a filtration bag and run an exhaust hose out to my garage bin. That way I can just roll it up and store when not working. I just connect the intake hose to whichever tool I'm using at the time anyway, so one shop vac, which I already have, is all I need. My workshop is a two car garage which we park two cars in. When I'm working, the cars move into the driveway until I'm done for the day. So a mobile shop vac is best.

One thing to keep in mind is that a 2HP blower does not have enough suction or CFM to effectively gather small dust particles. It will help to keep your shop looking clean, but it doesn’t fix the dust in the air issue. For that, you want at least a 5 HP blower. Don’t take my word for it though… look up the great information by Bill Pentz, who is pretty much the best source of information on woodworking dust collection. If you’re planning on wearing P100 respirators in your shop regardless, then that even better. That’s what I do, because I don’t have an adequate dust collection system yet.
@SaintFredrocks
@SaintFredrocks 9 ай бұрын
I thought the main reason for the chip separator was to protect the blower. My first setup was similar to yours, with the vented outside part, but I made a Thein separator for the chips. It worked great and it was a lot quieter too. That was in Florida, but I am in Michigan now, so in winter I can't afford to heat the great outdoors, so I went with the Thein and a canister filter. I am going to enclose the canister some to try and minimize the noise. I just put the Wen impeller in my HF, and now it is even louder, but it really sucks so that's good.

Hi Matt, I know this is an older video, but just wanted to say thanks!! I am building out a basement wood shop and have been spending the last week or so doing research on the best dust collection systems. I had narrowed it down to 2 very expensive units that all in were going to run me over two thousands dollars for my hobby wood shop! I had not even considered piping the dust outside, and after watching this I am thoroughly impressed by the marketing at these big companies, they circumvented my own common sense, but thankfully not yours. Gonna build out my system to go outside into box. Awesome video bruhv!!

you are correct, I at one time bought a tube 2’ x 12” cylinder from Lee Valley, I used it in my garage and it worked very good, to clear out the air if I didn’t do to mush work but I had to clean the filter regularly, I used it in a garage to finally spray several kitchen cabinets water based stain and three coats or clear coat, it did work perfectly as if I had done it in a automotive spray booth, that one did filter the air to that performance but the filters must be cleaned as they build up

Much appreciated MP! Would not of thought about the health risk of fine dust in a workshop. I am a rookie and am looking forward to a hobby of small builds. Without your video I would have been going down the trail of internal dust collection via a cyclone. You have saved me time, energy & money. I would like a suggestion on collecting onto a garbage can (don't have farm animals, so a trailer is a bit big for me). I have a nice shop and the ability to collect dust externally. I agree with your information on this subject. I have been in several high production woodworking and cabinet shops and you are correct . Those that have the education on what you are saying will never disagree with you. I looked into setting up a small 10,000 sq ft. shop years ago and that was one of the city's regulations that all the dust collection be outside. I also agree that in some cases you would have to implement the cyclone in smaller shop such as I am having to do for now. So in all fairness to the subject. I completely agree. Thanks for all the great content that you produce. Alway look forward to your content and opinion. P.S. Love your shop setup blu the way. Thanks again Matthew.

The main reason I don't discharge the dust from my collector outside my shop is that I Condition the air in my shop with a Mini Split. If I blew 300-600CFM of air straight out of the shop, it has to be replaced by an equal volume of unconditioned air from outside the shop. Here in the South Eastern US, that means hot, humid air being drawn into the shop in the summer while I eject all the cool dry air from inside to the outside along with the dust. And in the Winter it means the warm air is ejected and cold air is drawn in to replace it. That's $$$ down the drain not to mention changes in the Humidity of the shop which impacts the wood I store in there. My old shop didn't have Heating/AC in it, so yeah, I used a shop made Thien Baffle on the dust collector (outside) and directed the exhaust into the trees behind the shop. I've switched to a totally internal system with a filter in the new shop.

This is 100% true. I have a similar DC motor that I took off the basic single stage system I bought used for $150. Mounted it to the wall, ducted outside, dumps in a trash can. Easy, clean, and I don’t care about losing air from my space. Works wonders and way easier.

That's my solution. I try to do as much work outside on my 4 acre property and when I sand, esp the turnings I put a fan blowing it all into the woods. Wear a respirator and use a small leaf blower to push decontaminate myself. Now I do want to build a shop by extending the shed, and I think I'm gonna have the dust collector in a small extension in the shade. I thought of adding up a silencer box to the exhaust, just a longish box with baffles inside with a hole cut out in the middle, kind of like a gun silencer. Gravity would dump the dust down still, but it would make it quieter.

That’s a nice shop. I have experience with your motor. I really never thought about it but that sucker I used had some power. That one I used was hooked up to chop saw mainly and a jury rigged collector for a panel saw. We were always playing with the panel saw. It was a oversized skill saw on a commercial frame. I will look at your style when I get there. My sawdust goes on the floor now, and yes it can make a mess in a hurry. I like your videos a lot. Keep it up!

i do have a gas heater in my 12x38' shed so was going to go with a cyclone and filter all installed in my add on 8x12 garden shed for noise reduction and space savings in the main shop.. I did consider venting it outside without a wynn filer but I may need to have a return air passage between rooms for heat rentension. however I am more of a winter hybernating type.

Great idea. My setup is similar to yours. I have the dust collector on the inside with the cyclone separator, but the exhaust air is blown outside with the fine dust. To make up for the loss in heating/cooling, I've installed 8 solar panels (425W each for $165 online) and added those to my array to make up for the loss, as the 3hp unit takes out 2600 cubic ft per minute. I use the cyclone as I like my chips and dust to be used in compost or compressed into bricks to burn them for heat in the stove. Venting it outside the way you have it, in my situation could be a bit messy, the cyclone makes it super easy. Otherwise, I agree with you 100%. Great video.

Another drawback to blowing dust outside is that it creates a negative pressure in you shop. Ok in summertime but up here in Canada that’s a lot of hot air going out the door.
@christianratajczak2809

@@AndreRiopelvery true. I’m in Canada myself near London, ON. I use an air pre warmer and I use the energy from the solar panels to preheat the air or in the summer time I use dehumidifier to remove the moisture as we get here 90% humidity or more. Especially my place which is directly on Lake Erie. It can be done if you’re in a country side property and have tons of room to do it. If you’re in the regular neighborhood, then you’re stuck with filters trying to extract dust and keeping the conditioned air inside.

I see all these comments about sucking the air out of the shop. The answer is the same as in kitchens where they are running very powerful exhaust systems. The answer is referred to is called “make up air”. This air is brought in from outside very close to the exhaust system. This equalizes the air inside the kitchen, as it were. Look it up, it’s been around for many years. Good luck.

That's nice and all but you are missing one important thing: When you takt all the air you are moving to outside you are also losing all that conditioned air. That is why you need a cyclone, to separate the particles from the air so that conditioned air can be returned back to the conditioned shop space. Otherwise, you to will create a negative pressure in your shop and the unconditioned outside air will have to leak back into the shop somehow. Also, with a return from your dust collection system it will run better because it is balanced. IF you look at the big shop this is also how they do it. There is a return duct back into the shop.

I use a 3hp cyclone, and vent outside. So the cyclone collects most of the dust, and the finest dust goes out the vent. The system works great, and I have the filter so I can use it on really cold or hot days. But the filter cuts my flow in half.

If you're pumping out 1,500 cubic feet per minute, where are you getting your make-up air? I would guesstimate a LOT of us heat and/or cool the air in our shops in summer or winter, and plumbing outside would push a whole shop's worth of conditioned air out in a few minutes. I'm considering building some sort of cut-out system (like car guys did for exhaust) to push out the dust/chips in the spring and early fall when I'm not conditioning my air. If you've read Bill Pentz's work, there's a lot more to collecting the small dust. I've resigned to being a chip collector, and running an air cleaner with excellent filtration.

Great vid dude. First. Don't. Do not let the know it all's get you down. I don't have to agree with everything you say but you do offer good input. Second, I just purchased my first serious band saw and have been researching set up and fine tuning. I have watched all the greats and not so well knowns and EVERYONE has there own methods and reasonings for what they do and why they do that way. Each video more or less making sense. After doing the research its time for R and D. I"M now researching dust collection and use much of your experience designing my system. I've been watching you content for a while. Keep up the good work. Liked. Subscribed.

Hey Matthew, lots of good advice. I especially like your closing where you show the roll around dust collector in the background. 😱. Just kidding, I realize everyone needs a roll around once in a while. For those who are garage woodworkers I would suggest setting up a fan at the garage door, when possible, lift the door some and exhaust the air from the garage as much as possible. Or put a fan in a window if possible that you can open to exhaust the air from.
