In this video, I talk about why hand planing is the best way to finish wood.
These days it is less common for houses to be built showcasing wooden structures.
As a result, there is no place to demonstrate the value of skillfully crafted wood.
However, the planing technique has been handed down and used in Japanese architecture since ancient times, and it has significant meaning.
I would be happy if you could understand this value even a little.

I'm an apprentice carpenter in yacht company in UK, because of the nature of our job most of the wooden elements should be sanded and coated with the right product to ensure long lasting water repellency in this humid environment. It is the first time I have seen the purpose of planing for wood so clearly and even if I had it somewhere in the back of my head, now I'll definitely remember the reason for this, thank you so much :)

Thank you for getting right to the point, I couldn’t find anything else on KZfaq that actually explained the purpose of planing - a lot of information (and probably not much of it accurate or true) about how to make planers or showcasing the thin shavings, but nothing about WHY. Good on ya.

Excellent, I enjoy the to watch this high level of professionalism and proudness of your work I've for several years tried to master the planing Couldn't you make a video about this - like how to select the plane, how to sharpen it, how to adjust it and how to handle it It might seems trivial for you, but I really have troubles doing this

I think it is interesting that the technique you use to saw and plane is to "pull towards" you. I was always taught to "push away".

Thank you, There is always so much more to learn. One question: with regard to planing when creating Kumiko, why does it seem artisan carpenters plane one side while preparing the segments.? I always expect them to turn them over, but that is never shown. Is it a matter of keeping their video brief, or is there a reason for the one-sided planing

I would imagine prolonged exposure would still result in absorption, especially on the end grains. I can see that you are severing a lot less cell walls on the wood surface, thus allowing far less water to ingress. Very nice demonstration. Not many people wants to learning these traditional techniques anymore thought, everyone here just want to pick up a mirka or festool latest and greatest electric sander. :(

Hi, I found this a very interesting & highly valuable, clearly explained reason to plane rather tan sand timber. I must find somewhere I can buy some Japanese planes because in Australia we push our planes away from our body where you pull towards your body. I would love to see a video of how you sharpen your plane blades, what type of 'stones' you use for sharpening & how you set up your plane for work. I envy the long, transparent ribbons of timber you remove in such long pieces. Thanks for sharing this video Shoyan. Cheers, Don from South Australia.

I wonder if hand scraping the wood achieves *partly* the same effects as planing, as it is also using a sharp edge to remove surface irregularities?? Can anyone comment on this thought?

How does a metal scrapper and glass scraper compare to hand planning and sanding? That is in the since of stopping wood from absorbing liquids and oils.

Thank you for the wonderful content. Do you have recommendations for hand planes to purchase? Having only used western style planes, I'd like to try the pull style. Thank you.

Shoyan-sensei, domo, domo. I have been told many things about planing and cutting with Japanese tools. I heard that using a plane helps the wood's natural oils come to the surface which gives a superb finish and protection. And perhaps-- like sushi knives--the sharper the blade the less likely to mash the individual cells. Finely cut sushi tastes better--they say, and perhaps finely planed wood has specially qualities, too. What do you think of these two ideas? Please tell us what Japanese carpenters do when they use wood with knots and also when the knap of the grain changes direction? Are Japanese planes so sharp that no problem occurs? Thank you so much for your knowledge and effort to educate us.
