Really really nice! I love the quartersawn oak. Also, I’m an old guy, grew up in a farmhouse. All my friends parent’s had farmhouses. Had no acquaintance with any of this “farmhouse” style furniture that my twenty something daughter now likes so much. Somewhen, while I was busy with other things, a whole new “decor” was invented.

Great video as always. A few questions: 1. What was the top coat you used after staining the oak top? 2. Any concerns with screwing the frame down like that from an expansion/contraction perspective? It's quartersawn, so the movement is probably pretty minimal, but just curious. I like the edge profile that stacking the two assemblies like that created.

I just used a precat lacquer on top. The frame construction of the bottom half of the top eliminates almost all of expansion concerns. Thank you very much for reaching out...I enjoy your questions and comments. Glad you liked it.

Great build, I have a client that wants a farmhouse desk with drawers, this video was a great help. On another note: I am in the process of building a kitchen island that I plan on selling, I am building the top pretty much the same way you did on this desk. It appears you screwed the top 2 pcs together, then screwed it to the base. Or did I miss something and you somehow allowed for the wood movement? I am at the point of attaching the top and trying to figure out how I am going to allow for the wood to expand and contract. ( I am using red oak for the top and the face frame underneath) Any advice on that issue would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hi Rick...yes the top two pieces are screwed together before being attached to the cabinet. Don't glue the top piece to the support frame underneath and that will allow for additional movement in the top. Based on that, you should be ok. Hope this helps....thank you! Wes

Absolutely beautiful Wes!!! What kind of paint did you use for the white? I’m assuming it was a lacquer or something similar??? Again buddy, absolutely beautiful!! One of those would look fantastic in my house when I finally get around to getting walls up. Like you said, the builder never gets his house done but everyone around him looks like they live in the magazines on the newsstand every month and it’s officially gotten old!!! I’ve lived in my gutted out house with no a/c, no furniture, no insulation, no kitchen, etc, for five years but I’m back to working on it and I’ve got insulation in now and Sheetrock on about half the walls and I vaulted all the ceilings and have done shiplap on those so it’s really starting to look good but I’m just ready to be thru with it and I hope by Halloween I can put some furniture in and finally cook a meal again. Take care Wes, stay safe out there buddy!! Love your videos!!!

Woodworking With Wes well it is now Wes, thank you. It wasn’t there for some reason when I first watched which is why I was asking, I always go to the description before I ask anything so you don’t have to repeat yourself. I watched within 5 minutes of posting and the entire description section was blank, there was nothing there

2 Things: A) It would be nice if you showed what the desk looks like in the beginning. B) My girlfriend cringes every time you reach over with your left hand to grab the piece, " He's too close to the saw, I don't care if the shield is there he should be using his right hand."
