I really enjoy these videos, especially the tricks like the spacer jigs. I would also appreciate more details about some steps that were not shown such as installing the hinges (on face frame) and cutting the doors down to size after the banding was applied. I would think that slotted holes were made in the two cleats ,and screwed through into the top,allowing the wooden top to seasonally expand and contract. Playing cards,or beer mats make excellent spacers to align the doors ,prior to marking and drilling hinge locations on the cabinet. A very attractive and well built piece of furniture - and each stage was perfectly explained ,and demonstrated by Wes. Thank you ,your clear and pleasant manner is always a joy to watch.

Could you show how to build a base kitchen cabinet without the toe kick? Meaning like a 2 part base cabinet where you have the base and then sit the box cabinet on top.

What was the sealer coat that you sprayed over the stain? Water or solvent based? Also what filler do you like to use?

Famo wood is the filler I use. The sealer coat is solvent based, sanding sealer and should be available at your local retail paint supplier. Thanks for watching, Wes

I love this cabinet and the finish! Did Mrs. Wes like it? Are there plans available? Is there any reason you couldn’t finish the flat panel on the sides before adding the rails & stiles? Thanks for another great video!

You could finish the flat panel first, however, you would still need to apply the finish to the inside edges of the stile and rails. It seems to me it's just easier to do it all at once. Yes, my wife did like it and sorry we don't have plans at this time. Thanks for watching, Wes

Just screw the top on from underneath on the inside just like countertops are attached to a cabinet. Attaching the top is very simple

@1982MCI if it were a counter top or plywood top you could definitely do that. But with it being solid wood, there is a lot more to it than that. There are several ways to do it to prevent future problems, just wondering how he did it.

@@paulbutton8933 no, there really isn’t a lot more to it than that. I understand where your coming from but this isn’t the breadboard ends on a walnut table we’re talking about here. It is a short3’-4’ chunk of glued up solid wood. There won’t be enough expansion & contraction in a piece this size that will be in a climate controlled environment for its remaining life so unless you just want to make it much more difficult then yes, it really is that simple, lol 😂.

The pulls give it the modren look. But its kinda shaker style. It gives me an idea how to go about making a what was cheap finiture in the 40s knock off. The dresser uses 1/4" plywood Pannels where yours uses 3/4" It has internal framework that also operate as draw slides. The units not very heavy but its pushing 80 years old and has managed to live that long and be useful. It could be made of 1/4" luan and some solid lumber 1/2 lap joints and small bracing triangles to hold the thin plywood to the inner framework. I could probably make the whole dresser for under 100 bucks no draw slides and no fancy dovetail draws all the exposed wood surfaces are 1/4" plywood including the draws behind the face is framework from cheap wood like a pine even pallet wood. You can find some pretty nice looking luan underlayment with decent grain patterns. Like I said mines held up 80 - 90 years over that time period it been repaired a few times but I grew up with it and still use it. Yes I could go buy a new fancy bedroom set but why waste money when ive got something that works. Im always confused why people waste money buying new every few years. Some people even throw it away, instead of giving it to someone who can use it. I've seen really nice looking stuff set out as trash. Much better then my dresser. This buffet looks nice, not a fan of face nails. Some places could have been pocket holes. I was watching this old house They went to a comercial cabnit shop the face frame was installed using biskets that slipped into a grove cut down the edge of all the face plywood parts that showed the at the frt but was getting covered. Now on 1/4" plywood you cant do that, but you can do the inside framework that way.

Hi...the biggest difference I would do would be to have 4 doors instead of just two to accommodate the added width. That would require a center style 4 hinge attachment. Hope this helps. Wes

Nice build. If someone new to this wanted to build it, there is a problem. He would have no clue how you installed the top. Also, guys always show the easy part of door installation and never the hard part. Like installation of the door. Holding in the opening, locating and drilling for hinges. Making sure the fitment is correct before drilling and fastening down a no-adjustable hing. Would save me from having to make a trip to my buddies' shop to help out.

Attaching the top is the easiest part. I imagine Wes assumes most guys watching his videos have very basic wood working skills and can figure out to run 4 screws in to attach the top, one screw in each corner just like you attach a countertop to a cabinet. The screw goes in each corner of the two thin strips of plywood that he put on the cabinet box. Drill a pilot hole first through the plywood strip and into the top but do not drill through. Then put the screw in from the underneath then run the screw in to the top. That’s it brother, very simple. Good luck

@@MAGAMAN I assume he positioned the grain pattern properly on each glued board so the movement would cause little disturbance if any. I have never had an issue as long as the wood was bellow 10 percent moisture when I sealed it. Maybe ive just been lucky. Now early in my career when I tried to use wood that was not dried it was a very different story. :).
