I like it. Woody is doing an "ad lib" or he is improvising on the melody - - of the song "Till We Meet Again" and he slows it down and speeds it up - - the way he prefers it. And the trumpet player plays - - the original harmonic melody of "Till We Meet Again".

Why the negative thumbs? This is an excellent performance of the musical style of the times. He played for years in jazz clubs all over New York City. No one can "Boehm" for using the old key system.

If Candida is correct, than in my opinion, this piece is the best of all Woody clarinet recordings. I believe I have most, if not all of his recordings, and I have never heard him improvise so beautifully. I do not know what year this was done, but it must be over 45 years ago. His album "Wild Msan Blues" was in1997-98 and this must be 10-20 years earlier.

He is always great, and I admire him so much. I can tell he was extremely nervous here as geniuses always are when doing something suddenly like sitting in here. I could tell he would normally play much more smoothly and better with his own group and environments with his own people. I know that, because I am exactly like him. Einstein was so nervous when played his violin for public and so was Charlie Chaplin.

Woody Allen and his group are converting me from classical to jazz. Classical is orderly, evokes orderly emotions, has rules. Jazz seems to have no order and no rules! It's just do what you want. But if Woody can play clarinet, he should find a pianist and a classical soprano and practice The Shepherd on the Rock, a fabulous classical piece for clarinet, piano and soprano. It's also called Der Hirt auf dem Felsen in German. About a lonely shepherd. See? Classical is orderly and has a theme. Jazz seems to be all over the place!

@DarkKar
@DarkKar 5 жыл бұрын
Watch Whiplash if you believe jazz doesn't have any "rules", and that's a terrible movie that doesn't even really scratch the surface on all the subtleties and ways you can miss the "rules" of jazz. Watch Miles Davis get pissed because Herbie Hancock for just two seconds of playing something similar to his own phrasing, listen to Harlan Ellison's story about how Mingus cold-cocked a trumpeter just for playing a butter note during a set, or listen to just five minutes of ANY of the Barry Harris's seminars on jazz. Barry Harris will go on at length and every word coming out of his mouth is unintelligible by anyone except musicians. He talks in major scale this, diminished that, 7ths, chords, the third, the F, C Major, the four, the end of the one, the E, do two, time signatures, key signatures, do triplets, and then he'll just completely vocalize what the concert is supposed to be playing. Good luck in that advanced quantum mechanics of a jazz theory class. There's certainly a proclivity to have more solos in jazz, and therein lies the improvisational aspect, but it's most certainly NOT "just do whatever you want".

He's actually playing a Full Albert system clarinet. It's not super uncommon to find jazz players using them. I don't quite recall how the keywork changes affect how it plays, but I know they tend to have larger bores but can still provide a deep typical (Boehm style) sound, which is why jazz players like them.

It is an Albert System clarinet that all the old clarinet players from New Orleans played and are mine, many others and Woody's heroes, less keywork than the modern clarinet making it more difficult to play, they have wide bores so you get a big sound, I play one made in the late 1920's.
