Join cast and creatives, including Wayne McGregor and Max Richter, to explore critically acclaimed ballet triptych Woolf Works in the lead up to its first revival.

‘Life is not a series of gig-lamps symmetrically arranged; life is a luminous halo, a semi-transparent envelope surrounding us from the beginning of consciousness to the end… the proper stuff of fiction is a little other than custom would have us believe it.’ - Virginia Woolf, Modern Fiction
Wayne McGregor’s ballet triptych Woolf Works, inspired by the writings of Virginia Woolf, met with outstanding critical acclaim on its premiere in 2015, and went on to win McGregor the Critics’ Circle Award for Best Classical Choreography and the Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production. The Observer described it as ‘a compellingly moving experience’; for The Independent it ‘glows with ambition… a brave, thoughtful work’; The Guardian concluded that ‘it takes both McGregor - and the concept of the three-act ballet - to a brave and entirely exhilarating new place’.
Each of the three acts springs from one of Woolf’s landmark novels: Mrs Dalloway, Orlando and The Waves - but these inspirations are also enmeshed with elements from her letters, essays and diaries. Woolf Works expresses the heart of an artistic life driven to discover a freer, uniquely modern realism, and brings to life Woolf’s world of ‘granite and rainbow’, where human beings are at once both physical body and uncontained essence. Woolf Works was McGregor’s first full-length work for The Royal Ballet, and saw him reunited with regular collaborator Max Richter, who provides a commissioned score incorporating electronic and orchestral music.

This was a magnificent insight into Woolf Works. I enjoy Wayne's works, but only truly appreciate them after learning more during rehearsals or these insight events. Highlighting notators and their work was also brilliant to see. Although I did love the bulk of what Margaret had to say and the way she guided the discussion, I felt like she often disrupted the other speakers far too often to stutter about her own thoughts. Lastly, I just don't have the words to describe the feelings I get seeing the dancers. Seeing them in this setting without dramatic lighting or costumes etc. creates a window to ever more appreciate their dancing. To me, I enjoy every opportunity to see the dancers so real, raw, and powerful. Bravo to Matt and Mara; Ed and Akane and Tristan

Michelle - I agree with everything you wrote - I watched this film in 2017 when originally broadcast live and as I haven’t ever read any of Virginia Woolf’s works was mystified by most of this ballet although appreciating the incredible dancing. I have watched it again following its release once more by the ROH during Lockdown and now that I have seen this rehearsal, will do so again having been enlightened by it. In many ways, I enjoy these rehearsals and World Ballet Day performances as much if not more sometimes because of the incredible insights they provide - so many thanks to ROH.

@@SmittenKitten. Things are going crazy here in Brazil! I miss having classes in person. But dancing is what calms me down, so I dance wherever I'm at. 😊 And I rewatched Woolf Works for the millionth time this week. The Royal Ballet keeps inspiring me. 🥰

I discovered Max Richter's music through his collaboration with Wayne McGregor in Infra and immediately fell in love. He's now one of my favorite contemporary composers and it's lovely that he was able to be on this amazing insight. Congrats, ROH team! You guys are fantastic. (Also, I couldn't help but notice that Max looks like he could be Mark Hamill's son. Am I the only one seeing the resemblance?)

Amanda Eyles typifies the amazing assistance that a notator can offer not only during the process of creating a ballet but also in its restaging. Here, she proves to be an important element in the production process. It is heartening to see the work of a notator in this perspective and witness the appreciation of those she works with. Bravo!

Are notators also coreographers o former dancers? How do you become a notator?
@robynhughesryman
@robynhughesryman 7 жыл бұрын
Paulina, normally notators are not choreographers, but there are a few exceptions. The skill set for a choreographer and a notator are different. You do not have to be a former dancer to become a notator, but it certainly helps if you want to work as a professional notator in a Dance Company. Amanda Eyles uses a system called Benesh Movement Notation (BMN) which is used to notate many forms of human movement. If you would like to find out about BMN in a Ballet context (and you have an iPad or a Mac computer), take a look at the ebook series - itunes.apple.com/book/benesh-for-ballet-book-1/id858252059; itunes.apple.com/book/benesh-for-ballet-book-2/id1059244734; and itunes.apple.com/book/ benesh-for-ballet-book-3/id1192384662.

Hi Paulina. Notators usually come from a dance background before taking a notation qualification. You can find out more about the role of the notator here www.roh.org.uk/news/ballets-secret-role-the-unsung-role-of-the-ballet-notator
