You are the first person I have found to also have the BabyLock Imagine and not be able to change the tension. This is what I came for! Running to buy your books now!

I didn't know you only needed wooly nylon for the loopers so I bought 4 as usual, guess now I have thread for like 10 years

I’ve used woolly nylon thread from Empress Mills in the bobbin on my sewing machine with great success. I used it on a twin needle hem before I had a coverstitch machine. The trick is to loosen the tension on the bobbin casing but of course you need to remember the previous setting and return it there afterwards!

I use it a lot, in the loopers of the serger, the looper of the coverstitch machine, and even in the needle of a flatlock stitch (serger) so the ladders show up really well. In the states we also have ILY Wooly Nylon with is quite spongy, and Gütermann's Bulky Nylon with is very similar to the maxi lock stretch. And I agree with a statement above: it makes a FANTASTIC rolled hem! Not only on clothing but also on things like napkins and the like. Great videos, Johanna, thank you!

I use wooly nylon, usually the Maxi-Lock brand in the loopers of my serger when I am doing a serger rolled hem. It gives great coverage on the rolled edge with none of the fabric showing through. If I want better stretch in my coverstitch using my coverstitch machine I will use wooly nylon in the looper thread. Since one of my sergers is a Babylock Evolution with air threading I will first thread the loopers with regular thread and then tie on the wooly nylon and gently pull through the eyes of the loopers - the air threading of my machine does not particularly like shooting the wooly nylon through the loopers as well as it does regular thread. I look forward to your upcoming coverstitch book.

thanks a lot for this video, after quite a bit of research, you're the first (and only) one I found talking about using wooly nylon in a regular sewing machine :) I don't have access to a serger or coverstitch, and I'd love to experiment with wooly thread. I hope for the twin stitch to feel softer, since repairing underwear or swimwear with regular thread feel sooooo scratchy!

I’ve found woolly nylon just lightly wound on the bobbin really helped with my twin needling - helped it not pucker between the two rows of topstiching
@kmariejs
@kmariejs 5 жыл бұрын
Does that mean you wound the woolly on the bobbin by hand, or could you wind the bobbin on the machine the usual way?
@CazPiranha
@CazPiranha 5 жыл бұрын
Kristin Schaffner I’ve tried both & found machine winding but with a looser tension (winding through my fingers rather than the machine winding mechanism) was the quickest & most effective compromise

Great video Johanna! I love using Wooly nylon (polyester version which is all I can find at Our local fabric store) on my cover stitch machine! I especially love using it as a detail on my husband‘s T-shirts, he loves that! Thank you so much for sharing the differences and the uses for them!

I’ll have to try woolly nylon as I’ve not felt the need and have a lot of regular cones. Having bought regular cones recently I’ll order some when next I’m buying threads. I would imagine that the Babylock machines will sense resistance and adjust tensions. But I’ll see how I get on next time. Thank you for the overview.

Hello there. Great video. I'm curious if you've ever used Polyarn by Superior Threads? It is a 100% 'woolly-like' texturized polyester serger thread. It is recommended to use when stretch is critical, advertised it has excellent elasticity, recovery, and flexibility. Thanks.

I was hoping you’d show how to thread the loopers with it. I think you’re supposed to bypass the air threading on the babylock? I bought 1 spool ages ago but have never used it. I think it is maxi lock brand. Not sure how to use it. Where / when , or if you only use it on knits? Or do you use it on the upper looper, or both?

Thank you for covering this topic. I’m sewing swimsuits for my daughter and I was wondering if wooly nylon thread would give more stretch to the seams and make them more durable or comfortable. I just got some in the mail today, so I now know to put it in my loopers. Can it be put in the needles, too?

I really appreciate your videos, i've learned so much from you... I am mostly doing, or like doing, lingerie. And i just bought the Brother cv3550, it's very useful, i don't know how i managed without it until now:))) I sometimes struggle with bulk in elastic, especially the narrow ones, like very delicate... Any tips on how to serger, cover stitch narrow delicate elastic? I will try also this thread, was very hard to find in Romania, but i managed, just got it yesterday. Thank you very much for all your videos.

great topic..ive tried wooly nylon but i could never get the tension right...mostly it just kept snapping on me...i cant remember the brand i used so not sure if quality was an issue but im pretty sure it was user dysfunction:)...ill try the brands you showed though, i sew a lot of foundation garments and would definitely be better...look forward to your book coming!

Yes the tension is the tricky part, and I've noticed that not all brands require the same settings. But a mix of lower looper tension and higher needle tension can work well I've found

Can you show how to thread your serger with wooly nylon thread. I was given several spools but the ends of the threads look frayed- how do you get it through the eye of the needle?

Use regular thread in the looper first, then tie the woolly to it and pull it through. This makes it much easier!
