It’s most likely graphite, glass/sand, and some form of refractory binder. Calcium carbonate will do. .005 grams of vanadium will help in the carbon dispersement.

This channel is quickly becoming one of my absolute favorites here on KZfaq. Everything you make is so unique and the process through which you make Wootz steel is so mesmerizing. But I am curious; what were the powders that you added to the crucible? I’m clueless as to what the first white powder was, but I’m guessing that the others were carbon (graphite) and powdered glass?

Dolomite is a flux, it helps to keep oxides from forming. It also contains magnesium which might help in the type of metallurgy he looking to achieve in the ingot. It’s also easy to find, inexpensive and safer to handle than other fluxes.

I felt the spirit of that blade evolve. It came out absolutely perfect. How big of a ball would you need of this caliper. This is an absolutely perfect piece that rivals the ancient Japanese forgers... You have brought that blade to a true finish. You should be proud of yourself. I have never seen anyone do that before. I am at awe. I have never seen a more gorgeous knife be made... It is to it's absolute core and it is amazing. Thank you for the inspiration you have given me. I understand your method and will persue to make my own katana from what I have learned from your method. It's absolutely gorgeous and I would die to have a blade of that quality. Very very nice, with a correct woots Damascus pattern. I was watching a Mike Lodes documentary in making traditional woots Damascus from the same mine in Jordan that Saladin used

Lovely knife, lovely work, but emphatically not Wootz. If you put iron ore in your crucible with sufficient carbon to make a crucible steel bloom, worked the bloom to successively remove the impurities then I would accept the claim. You are starting with steel and ending with steel. The whole point about the marvel of Wootz is that they produced crucible steel in a world that only knew iron. You do lovely work, when degrade it by claiming it to be something it isn't?

Can you forge an axe or Saladin sword from this technique? Beside, Saladin sword was known to the world to have original water pattern damascus in it as one of the feature.
