How to bypass an HVAC thermostat. Do you want to know if your home thermostat is bad, defective, or malfunctioning and that is the reason your AC or furnace is not working? In this video I will show you how you can tell if your thermostat is bad. Along with simple troubleshooting tips. You will simply need to bypass the thermostat to see if the problem really lies in your thermostat or not. Also, here is a list of what the thermostat terminals mean:
G= Fan
Y= Cooling
W= Heating
R= Power
Rc= Power to Cooling
Rh= Power to Heating
C= Common

I don't know ANYTHING about hvac..but recently had a recharge since i have a slight leak. I'm sure many have told you already but I just have to say, THANK YOU so much for all your videos. So glad I found this video. I thought my contactor or short cycle relay was bad. After watching this and jumping the terminals I determined I had a bad t-stat. New batteries didn't fix it. New one installed today and everything works! Thanks for posting this.

Well done and thank you for that awesome tip. My unit is not working and your advice, gives me more time to consider options. Great safety comments too, really appreciate you!! I do have a question, my issue with my AC is I accidentally disconnected the wires from the outdoor unit to the sensor. And the wiring the installer did was to connect to the same outdoor safety switch that brings the line to the load. I can't find any advice on how to reconnect the sensor wires.

Great video. Thanks much! As a suggestion, I would first start with red and green wire (fan) with the jumper since there is no timer or limit switch on that circuit. By using the red and yellow (A/C) you might turn on the timer/limit switch because the A/C compressor has a high and low side for pressure and possibly damage the A/C unit. If you activate the A/C timer/limit switch, the A/C unit may not operate until the time/limit switch times out.

Jay, after replacing the control board didn't solve the no heat problem and numerous other checks using your vids, I verifieded with a paper clip at the furnace and then the thermostat that it is the thermostat that I replaced a few months ago either was bad then or more likely I didn't throw the breaker and ruined it. I have just ordered another Tstat. Thanks for all your help. You saved me again and never have had to spend the money on a teh visit

One very important thing he forgot to mention is NOT TO JUMP "R" to "C" or be VERY careful not to touch the "R" to "C" as this will burn the fuse on the control board or trip the low voltage fuse inside the furnace. In most cases you will not even know you did this as it will not spark or anything. The fuse is like a car fuse that sits in a slot on the control board or sometimes a button on the housing where the control board sits.

R is usually the hot wire with 24 volts and C is the neutral wire, so if they touch it is like putting a wire from one hole in an outlet to another in the same outlet !! but because the voltage is 24 and not 110 or 220, it usually will not spark and not electrocute someone.

Yeah I just accidentally jumped R to C (red to blue in my case). Thanks for revealing the fuse in my furnace. Found it. Going to the auto shop tomorrow for a replacement 3A blade fuse.

Man, you saved me! My thermostat was bad. Weird because I bought a honeywell cheapo several months ago. What happened is I turned on ac for the first time and heat seemed to come on and so did the compressor at the condenser. I turn off the thermostat and seemed like 7 to 8 minuets before it finally turned off. Anyway, I jumped red and yellow and boom , my ac is throwing cold air. I will be at home depot in the morning. Thanks for saving me from freezing, you are simply great. Everything you said worked as in your video, my heater is now running and the house is getting warm. If I understood right putting jumper wire between R and Rc will make both cool and heat work. Before I had the wire in Rc only and AC worked fine but heat didn't.

RC and RH are separated to accommodate systems that have two transformers. If you only have one transformer, you terminate to either one and have them jumped together. Most stats will have a factory jumper already installed as most systems have only one transformer.

You mentioned that it is better to turn the furnace switch off After you find out if the thermostat is getting power to do the bypass. How can the motherboard gets power to turn on things if you switch the furnace off, am I missing something?

You sir are a wealth of knowledge! I'm subbed! I am having these issues at present and came across your channel and have been watching the videos you posted. My furnace just started short cycling recently and I am trying to troubleshoot it with out calling for repair but that option isn't off the table. I have a lennox elite g50uh. I don't have the on/off switch at the furnace so I have to trip the breaker. I cleaned the flame sensor though it really didn't look that dirty as compared to what the videos have shown it can look like but problem remains. I will replace it since it doesn't cost much and see if that fixes it. Blower fan starts, the igniter lights,, I get flame but it turns itself off. It either turns itself off quickly or turns on but stops shortly thereafter. I've wanted to replace the thermostat to something a bit more modern (and I'm not sure if this is the problem).

In the winter (about 4-5 months ago) my outside AC compressor was coming on when the furnace was on. I turned the AC circuit breaker off to turn the power off to the compressor as there was no other way to stop it from running w/the heater. (I figured I'd deal with it in the springtime. Now that it is getting hotter outside, I went to use the AC yesterday (turning the circuit breaker back on first) and neither the blower fan motor or compressor is coming on with the AC (will not work even in HOLD mode). If I switch the thermostat back to heater mode, the heater works fine. I did notice also, turning the fan switch on the thermostat will not turn the fan on, but again the fan works in Heat mode. Is this likely a thermostat problem (which I am guessing it could be)? Any ideas would be deeply appreciated. Also, I do have a voltage meter to test thermostat if I know the procedure. I would guess 24 volts from red and common. THX. The thermostat is a program-able Ritetemp model 8022C.

Thank you Dude!! Just replace my thermostat and the technician did not do a by pass from R to RC and my AC turned on. The oil provider ROB here in NY is charging mr for 125 dollars diagnostics and 215 per hour of labor and plus for parts and blah blah blah!! I just did it my self bypassing..

Great Video!! Before I tackle the Thermostat and Control Board. When I switch to fan only the blower does not come on. When I switch to Heat "Auto or On" the fan does not come on but the furnace is fired up and working. Fan may be on but really can't feel it. When I switch to AC and auto the blower works great. Does the blower have a different speed when in Heat mode? Seems it should be blowing more air into the house like when in AC mode. Thanks for a reply!!

You are the best on how you explain the process of troubleshooting. I have question for you. One Smart termostat Nest was set to Heating. But the system turned on the AC during winter and caused the evaporator to freeze. For troubleahooting:- 1. Y1 is removed from the circuit board at furnace, and removed the Nest thermostat face. Y1 still connected on terminal plate of thermostate. And It read 24v on Y1 at furnace side while termostate is not even covered. If Y1 is removed from termostate terminal, it has no voltage down the Furnace side Y1. I believed the Y1 is getting power at terminal plate of thermostat. Which means RC was creating direct connection to Y1. What do you think?

I found that my ecobee thermostat was burned and so we replaced it with an old thermostat but the furnace does not come on. Could there be another issue beside the thermostat? Before we jump it, should we check anything else?

Thank you so much for the video! I have no display on our thermostat which means I can't get our heat to come on obviously. The breaker seems okay however I simply cannot get any power to the thermostat? In your video you said once you use to jumper cable if nothing happens then you know it's not your thermostat. Not sure if I heard that wrong but wouldn't it be the opposite if nothing happens then something's definitely wrong with no power or display on thermostat? If you jumper R to W at the thermostat and the furnace turns on that means the thermostat is bad or the batteries are dead on it. If nothing happens, then the problem is in the furnace. The furnace is supposed to send 24 volts to the thermostat and maybe it is not doing that for some reason. Have you watched my Top 10 Furnace Problems video? That one has a lot of furnace problem scenarios. One of them may be what you are experiencing :)

@Word of Advice TV Does this bypassing technique apply to line voltage thermostats like those in wall mounted units? The voltage and power on those are much higher so I'm not too sure how good of an idea it is for that situation?

Usually R to Y is all that is needed. The control board should automatically turn the blower motor on with the air conditioner.

Thank you so much I tried what you suggested, saved me a service call of $70.i installed a new thermostat.I didn't turn switch on back to gas or oil, I guess I shorted. Any ideas on a decent thermostat please. I bought a cheap 25 guess goofed lol

As long as it works, it doesn't really matter which one you get :) I personally like thermostats with less buttons. Unfortunately I don't have any recommendations for you though..

Hi want question I buy a new thermostat and install everything the same way ,and when I put in auto only my ac turn off and on but my fan don't turn off and on my fan stay on all the time

Great video. So for the nest I have it says I need a common wire. I bout the 24 v adapter. Plug the white n black into C and the white into R with the red wire too tight?

Off topic question as I just found your videos, which are very informative, thank you. I bought a lot of 15 honeywell 9320 wifi thermostats and do not have anywhere to hook them up to test for power or if wifi registered. would you have a fix or what type of portable battery set up i can use to connect it to to test? Thank you. Cindy

Any recommendations on how to verify the temp reading in the thermostat other than using external thermometer in the room?

Unfortunately I don't have any such recommendations :) If a customer tells me their thermostat is not reading the right temperature I usually just put 3 thermometers around the thermostat (2 temp probes and a probe connected to my meter) and see what they all say. If all 3 are a few degrees higher or lower, then yes, the thermostat is off. Most times my thermometers match up with the thermostat though.

Wonder what experience you have with Nest thermostats. I used to have a honeywell that could run the fan while heating and cooling were off. After switching to Nest I can only run the fan with it set on cooling or heat - but the fan can still run without the furnace or AC running. Wondering if maybe I should try jumping R to G to see if the fan kicks on.

I’m getting 16v only on my C and R wires! My new Honeywell thermostat is not turning on! What is causing it? When I switch the electricity on, the fan turns and the thermostat display remains off. Can you help?

My Symptom: Air Conditioning working fine with no Issues. But when I would turn on the heat I would get a wiring error on the Nest E103 W1. Note: the Compressor would short cycle in heat mode but not in cooling mode. After about 10 minutes of this I would get the crossed wrenches symbol on the Nest. This system has been working for 4 plus year prior to the error message. Love your AC videos! FYI I have a 5 Ton Trane handler and a Trane Model 4TWX8060A 1000CA Compressor. When I jumped the R1 and W1 to by-pass the Thermostat it blew the 5 amp fuse in the air handler. Not sure what I did wrong? However, once I got the fuse replaced I abandoned the thermostat by-pass test and re-did the R1, Blue Common, and W1 connections at the compressor and now all seems to be working. Awesome video. It worked. Just one question and it's probably a stupid one. That's all I need to do until they can come fix the thermostat right? It's running now and will continue to run until I flip the switch. Is that a safe way to run it?

Mine has RC;RH;WB only wired and the RC and RH are jumpered and white wire is on WB the furnace wont start up at all.

It doesn't have to be off. Just be careful not to touch R to C as that would be a direct short and will burn out the fuse.

If you want cooling, do you need to jumper both the cooling and the fan? Or do you just need to jumper the cooling and the fan will be automatic? Thanks

Thank you very much for your videos. My question is i have voltage at the thermostat when I jump to the fan it turns on. When I jump to the yellow wire I get nothing. I go to the unit push in the plunger in the contactor and everything turns on. So where would I go from here. Thanks in advance

Should there be continuity between any wires while the unit is turned off? I have continuity between the Y and R wires with the breaker turned off to the AC unit.

My HVAC Tech can't seem to find an issue with my furnace unit. (12 year old 1 stage unit house built west coast in 2008 attic unit which, I am not that flexible in maneuvering around) What I am experiencing however, sometimes (more often than not with heating)is the heat will come on (not always), then the fan will either be a delayed in turning off by 30 minutes by up to an hour and a half after reaching target temp. Or the the fan won't turn off at all unless I manually go to the thermostat to the force a fan idle signal be sent to the control board which will then turn it off around 15 to 30 minutes later when it use to be about 5 to 10 minutes after the heat cycled off. I have tried taking the thermostat cover off to turn the fan off but the fan keeps running. He did say their is a fuse in the unit but it is not blown and previous visits has ruled out rollovers, and high limit switch triggers. When I watch the thermostat I will hear the system cycle down when it does heat and reach target tempurature usually around 73 deg, but the thermostat fan will never switch to fan idle and 10 seconds later the fan kicks back on and stays on. Then after the fan cools the house down again the furnace will kick on and reach target temp and then sometimes the signal will successfully turn the thermostat fan setting to idle sometimes it wont. So I was curious if this sounds like an issue with my 3-4 year old SMART thermostat, or if something else might be causing the issue.

Thank you for your very useful video series. I have a question for you, my Carrier AC stop working without notice, my thermostat is working. I checked capacitors and they look fine. The only thing I saw was that the LED light on the board is off. Could it be a bad board? Thank you in advance

Hey that's exactly what my situation is. I replaced the batteries & it appears to be working but no longer lights up. Did you ever get it figured out? My husband is off working & it's 87° inside my house right now!
