WordPress has released a new feature called "Pattern Overrides" which are essentially reusable components.
- These patterns allow for creating reusable layouts, designs, and content blocks that can be used across multiple pages.
- Patterns can be easily edited centrally, and changes will propagate to all instances where the pattern is used.
- Patterns can be nested within other patterns, allowing for complex, modular designs.

Can you add a new element to a pattern? For example, can I add a new text element or button and have it show up wherever it’s been used?
@jamiewp

Great question 👍 Yup you can - here's a demo of how I add a new paragraph block to an existing pattern and then that is filtered down to each instance where it is used vimeo.com/942033332?share=copy

@@jamiewp I am fundamentally component-oriented due to my programming background. Adhering to the principle of not repeating oneself is central to this approach, and components are instrumental in achieving it. Cwicly (sadly now defunct) championed this in the WordPress ecosystem, and other builders are now taking note. Given the corporate enthusiasm for CI, this methodology allows designers to create discrete design elements and assemble them into larger, nested structures. There's no need for guesswork… you can provide clients and their staff with a manual or a set of parts. While the block editor offers considerable flexibility, it unfortunately conflates design with content, representing a step back towards a less clear separation of concerns.

@@jamiewp what I'm still missing is inserting other elements into the "components". Like either having a replaceable placeholder, or truly inserting anything anywhere inside the component. That latter is technically probably riskier to implement. A replaceable placeholder would already work in most cases.

Terminology: Many are miss-using the term Gutneberg. I think you are talking about the "Block Editor" (a misnomer itself, because you are NOT editing blocks, but pages) not "Gutenberg", which is a plugin you can install to test the latest beta version functionality - DO NOT use the Gutenberg plugin on a production site. This is a terrible element if the developer installed this feature and did not inform the client about it... Then the content manager fixed something on another page and messed it up on all the other pages. 🥲 The developers of the WP functionality should have taken a more serious approach to the notification that this block is part of a component... Maybe draw some kind of icon...
