Neil Young - Words HQ (Between the Lines of Age) (Extended)
I can't think of a better way to end this album than with a sad ballad of authentic folk rock in which Young, in a dramatic and purely poetic way, reflects with melancholy on the sterility of his life as a rock musician in comparison to those for whom work and effort have real and true meaning. He wonders with fear if he would have been able to be anyone else if he had not been himself and is surprised that the one he admires is precisely him, when all he does is sing empty words while the years continue to pass unabatedly.
The way in which the different voices fit together, the piano arpeggios, the transitions between 6/8 and 5/8 bars in the instrumental parts that end in a 4/4 on the return of the main voice, the stridency of the electric guitar, the chosen theme... Words has something of a magic quality that prevents one from listening to it with indifference and distance. It is probably one of Young's best songs and the perfect finale to the album that anyone who wants to know the keys to approach his discography without misgivings should listen to.

Thank you Canada, because a world without Neil Young would be a colder, harsher and much more dismal place, indeed! I've loved Neil's music since the '70's and will until I'm ashes, dust and someone's memory. And even after all that (hehe). But right now, the fact that KZfaq had the stones to place a damn commercial ad right in the middle of this epic song makes this tune even sadder.

A jewel of a tune from old Neil on this version of Words from his best album to date, who would of thought that this once clean cut boy from Northern Ontario Canada with a shaky voice at the best of times could transform himself into one of the greatest songwriting / performers ever. Interesting, the part where Neil stops the song and gives instructions to the band on how he wants the refrain being played, which can be heard on the original 1972 double LP (Journey through the Past) has been completely edited out and in a very clever way. This happens at approximately 2:52, the only trace of something going on at this point is the fact that in this mix they play the refrain only once instead of twice.

@LAR - your analysis here is pretty much Spot On.. As is so often the case, ones lifelong dreams often fall short in reality.. But it's more about the cycle of life that is misplaced along the way.. Every peak is followed by descent, and I think that Neil Young understands that more than any other singer-songwriter of the era.. He speaks to Everyone, but his Music is far more complex.. It's curious, unusual, profound, and yet engaging.. You have to keep listening, and listening again, until his lyrics are firmly cemented in your head.. This is why Great Music and Great Art endure.. These words, and these images, hold different meanings for Everyone who hears them, or sees them.. Everyone is on their own journey, and once an Artist releases a new piece of work, well, they no longer Own that work.. It now belongs to the Masses, to the Public.. And that is what makes Great Art so Powerful.. Everyone is able to take from it what they Need.. All of those things that stir our Emotions are layered somewhere in that great piece of work.. And I know that Neil has always been aware of that power.. It's been the force behind his unusual songwriting style, his fragile vocal delivery, and certainly in his guitarwork.. What else is there to say... Great Art and Great Music is what keeps us Alive... Lary

I'm sixty nine ! Mes amis m'aiment-ils encore ?
