There are many changes to Layout that I would really like to see, but one simple change would be to add a move tool. Take the move tool from SketchUp and implement it into LayOut. Every time I move something in LayOut, I am almost always doing it from a certain reference, which means I need to move the center grab first, then move it. This typically means I need to be zoomed in far enough to be able to do that as well. I believe, with a move tool, it would be MUCH faster. This same theory could apply to the rotate tool and scale tool. Although, these I do way less often and these are easy enough to do without their own tool.

This is exactly what i presented last year on SketchUp Bizcamp in Bangkok, create a layout template that linked to sketchup template. My sketchup template is IFC compatible and standardized organized tag. My layout template automates scale drawing and description, structural grids, support multi floor, standardized layer, and shadow study, etc I am waiting for sketchup provide this kind of template since long time ago, but sadly never happened until 2023 release.

My luck!!! I missed the live session ☹️. But then? When not handled properly layout isn't just slow, it crawls 😁.

Yes. It does take both pre-work/thought and practice to keep things running optimally at all times.

Hello. I am new to sketchup having come from a CAD background. While I really appreciate and understand the effort and time put into sharing this presentation I'd like to offer a suggestion to do a little more pre-planning, follow an outline or script, and practice the presentation before going live next time so the instruction flows a little more smoothly. It'll also help whoever's presenting be more relaxed and focused as well. With so many backups, skip arounds, and side thoughts, it became quite difficult to follow after a while.

Thanks for the feedback! These live models are intentionally presented as live modeling sessions where we get to hang out with our connuity, make mistakes, and learn as a group for a couple hour each week. If you are looking for more focused training, check out the other videos on out channel like our Level Up SketchUp videos. Or, if you are looking for structured learning, check out SketchUp Campus at learn.sketcup.com!

Does anyone know if there is a tool/extension that enables a user to extrude multiple faces (i.e. faces on the same plane/axis in an array, etc.). Case in point, I've had to fabricate realistic horizontal-slotted C channel, and ended up extruding each one of the tapered rectangles (i.e. the slots) one at a time. Granted, it didn't take all that long to make the C channel; However, being able to extrude multiple faces simultaneously would help improve workflow and increase time efficiency. (Obviously, this is a SU question and not necessarily a LayOut question).

Ha. Yes maybe not the right term but I would be curious to know the SU to SU+LayOut user number comparison... I'd guess it's less that 10%...which is why I'm trying to make it more accessible for people to jump in and give it a try.

your furniture symbols are in SketchUp... not Layout... so why wouldn't you put your Lighting Symbols on Sketchup too? surely the same logic applies? 1:52:00... PS the separate material schema by "Color by Tag" is really a great insight... for symbolic material documents ( note that it is a SU Adjustment .. SU for the data, Layout for presenting the data... fundamental rule of databases)

Yes the 2D symbols were laid out intentionally in SU rather than LO since, for me, it's often easier to do floor plans or space planning in 2D. The 3D component is added to the 2D symbol in SU - this provides the option to use either...and to your point, to use the simplified 2D symbol in LO to keep things moving efficiently.

Why is it that the programmers have designed short cuts to a single letter why not 2 aside from the shift etc., this really limits the shortcuts. Example ZE for zoom extents ZP for zoom previous, to remember all the shift combinations you have to work full time on this.

Good question. I guess it's the same number of keys either way. I use shift as it's right there next to the left hand - allowing the right to stay on the mouse.

Layout has potential... but it is extremely slow. Users shouldn't worry about optimization methods when working (regarding speed, i.e. changing the size of the viewport is incredibly slow). This should work in the background of the software.

Hi This video is so slow. I'm a SketchUp user and wanted to know how to use Layout. I'm 13 Minutes in and have not been shown one thing yet. Just chat about people signing in from around the globe and Hi I've done this or that. Maybe the presenter is great at, and knows Layout brilliantly but it isn't coming across. JUST GET ON WITH IT. This is a very poor video. I don't know whether to persevere or just move on. You need to sit down and rehearse what you're doing. We don't go to these videos to here you as if we're in a chat room or a bar, chatting with your mates. It's supposed to be a learning experience. Maybe later it gets better. But, I'm sure most people would have left the room by then!!!
