Louis, right after I watched your "reballing is bullshit" video, I just happened to have 2011 or so iMac with a dead GPU that I was looking at. You had mentioned that you could heat the chip to 150C or so, which is obviously lower than the melting point of lead-free solder, so I gave it a shot and hit it with 150C air for about 10 minutes and sure enough, the GPU came back to life. That right there verified it for me, I didn't do shit to those solder balls. I've baked a few motherboards in the past, never again. I told the owner that while I was able to get the GPU working again, their chip was unfortunately faulty and I would not be able to fix it.

Man I hate my leaded balls, heavy as hell to drag around all day. But the worst part is everytime I have to take any form of mass transit I get bitched at about my "Man-spreading" by every holder of a victim card... I feel like AC/DC must have had the same problem I'm having.

I bet someone made a fortune on those used 25 cent chips. Right? Right?? 😂 Sometimes if it quacks, walks, and sh**s like a duck - it really is a duck. Not always. Sometimes. As is the case here.

There is shit load of mainboards that has graphics chips never fail on them even with heavy gaming. If the problem was the solder balls, there should have been no model based or chip code based gpu failing issue.

Louis don't watch your old videos, you don't have time for this, let alone reading comments on your old videos. If you weren't arrogant you wouldn't be here to open the way for those less arrogant. Your attitude is reckless for your survival but as it is (survivorship bias) you made it where others didn't. It is a win for you and a net win for society, despite all those that may have had the same attitude as you and failed. So, yeah, for whatever reason you made it past that point. Just keep on doing what you do.

When I had my shop, more than 50% of the busted boards that would come in were HP DV6 machines with blown BGA chips that worked again when you pressed on them, I would always recommend buying a new machine, I never had your gear, so if they HAD to have their machine working again, I'd do a motherboard swap, but seriously, one month, I must have got 10 of those shit machines come through my door. Most wound up in the trash, where they belong.

I fixed a toshiba laptop gpu with a paint stripper gun and is still working 2 years later :D..I have no idea why it worked although i know its not the best practice i think taking the gpu off and replacing it with a new gpu chip by re balled.

My point was this person was going to throw it in the bin and i said i would do it for free if it worked it worked if it didn't it didn't i told them it could go off at any point so they took all there photos and documents off..It was done for knowledge not money i wanted to see if i could do it with out a 7k BGA machine for sh!ts and giggles. But i have to agree with you i don't think it was the balls under the gpu that was cracked or causing a short,,I think allot of people think the solder balls over heat and join together which is bull sh!t..This wouldn't happen because of the temps needed to solder the GPU to the board so i totally agree with what you said on the re balling thing the only time it should be used is to replace a BGA or GPU chip from new stock..I've achieved allot of things having no grades at school but with computers i picked up things fast i learnt programming C C++ Perl python ruby asm then moved onto debugging then i wanted to start exploit development not for cash as i was never paid by any developers it was more of a hobby for me and i helped allot of people from many places developers in applications fixing many remotely exploitable vulnerabilities in open source and closed source applications by looking at crashing the application and debugging the application finding out why it crashed and what CPU registers where tainted with my user input to see if i could control the EIP address and many others..I wasn't a sheep and never followed others i used different techniques to find these exploitable vulnerabilities that others where not using that is why i was successfully i was thinking out side the box and doing what others where not allot like your self i know people who have a bachelors degree that did not have a clue what i was doing..And i don't have any GCSES i dropped out of school playing consoles on the floor of a TV shop lol..So any one can do any thing they want belongs they are willing to put the effort in and learn..You cant buy knowledge its some thing that has to be learned by your own mistakes. My point being if you put enough time and effort into some thing you can achieve what you want when i watch you videos i can see how passionate you are about what you do,And part of me is down in by that known the passion i have for what i was doing even though i wasn't making any money it was for my own personal satisfaction and to help the developers fix these serious vulnerabilities so no computers where exploited by hackers..I turned white hat for free..I don't do exploit development any more but im considering my own business this year for sure..

Excellent. That whole hp dv-series is a pile of crap and that's because hp is too dumb for building proper heat management into their devices. These failing graphics chips are caused by a design flaw in that the heat pipe isn't touching the DIE and they "fixed" that by putting some sort of silicone washer into the gap. Heat conductivity ma ass xD. Nearly every hp laptop with dedicated graphics suffers from this (even newer models) and that's why my answer to anyone asking for advice on buying new laptops is "Anything but hp"

I'm just starting to get into smd repairs and it's great how much you can accomplish even with a limited toolset just by applying some common sense. Thanks for making these videos.
