THIS WEEK OF WORKING ON MY CALAMANSI FARM WAS VERY CHALLENGING.
Staff walkouts, finding out that we had received the wrong technical advice, and negotiating the difficult worlds in between:
But - we have to maintain a cautious optimism about this.

Hello everyone, This was a difficult topic to approach - and I just want to make clear that I am doing this to show the learning curve, not to point fingers or to shame anybody. I want to help others who might embark on a similar journey. But the good news is - I have found good people now! The ones you see in the video have been awesome! The ones who disappeared no longer work for me and are not featured in this video. I am new at calamansi, I am relying on the advice of those more experienced. As I said in the video here... It is not always that simple to find the right people. It did not help that I was away for so long - during a time when I was told it would have been OK as it was not a critical time yet (they were just rooting and didn't need too much care). But you live and learn - so there is definitely no need to finger point here. Everything will be OK, this is just one struggle that is part of the journey. That's normal with farming! Over the next few months, I will be here maybe two weeks every month. That is plenty for this - they are fruit, not fish. No more big trips for a while as this needs my focus!

Hey Anselm, never beat yourself up about other people's work life. Employ 10 people, you will lose nine and keep only the best one, keep doing that till you have your team. Too many people talk a good game but until they prove it to you treat it with scepticism... That way you won't feel let down and disappointed... It's time for you to hit the books and gain the knowledge you need from good people around you.. you will be a successful farmer just like you're a successful husband a successful dad and a successful KZfaqr 👍🇬🇧👌

I really admire you,a British humble man who just settled and adapted to life in the Philippines despite all the setbacks. I said it before, you and Kulas are my inspiration so when i go back to my family over there (San Pablo,Laguna,) I'll be able to concentrate and appreciate life there even more, knowing if you guys can make it so will i. Please consider to include avocados also or another farm for it. Avocados per kilo is much higher in value once it is being sold..much healthier and very much in demand: milkshakes,icecream,bubbletea, ,guacamole..etc. ☺️😋😋😋

Good idea. Our variety of avocados here are not that good. The best variety is hass avocado and i read somewhere that you cannot use the seeds of avocados that is good for planting as they will not bear the same quality of fruit that you tasted. Get the grafted hass variety of avocados if you can get them and i read somewhere that they are available now in the Philippines.

Hi Kumander. When I needed workers for my property in Cebu, my Aunts always suggested "pakyaw", so I won't have to worry about snacks. They also often asked for "advanced wages". I was told that that was the practice there. Thankfully, they were good workers. I also agree with some of the comments here, that sometimes, people can be vindictive.

I can commiserate with you on your farm labor experience. I found it was difficult to select help that had a "green thumb" and real knowledge as farmers. Then I met an old timer that told me to visit the homes of farm labor prospects and look at their own private gardens. Those that cultivated the best produce for local markets were the ones I began to hire. I also set up a field kitchen under a canopy and a cooking fire with a few pots for lunch on the site. Occasionally I would provide rice or breadfruit and a chicken for the pot. When I was away I appointed the worker who showed leadership abilities as a foreman and quality control supervisor. When the crop reached maturity those workers I retained switched from hourly wages to percentage earnings from market sales in which they assisted. When I retired they inherited the farming which I had established on leased land.

Calamansi is good source of income. 2017 when we planted 150 trees of Camansi. the volume grown when about 3to 5 years old and you can harvest in full in every 3mons. but in between, there's still a minimal harvest.. nonstop production actually when starting having fruits. but you need to trim every time grass around, need to water if there's no rain for few days also watch out from insects spray pesticides from to time and put some fertilizer every 6mons I think. that's how my brother take care Calamansi.

Cutting the grass is useless , they will grow back just as soon. The best is uproot them manually, it's taxing but worth the while . the added perk in uprrooting them is you loosen the soil for needed aeration of the crops

Kumander, I hope this experience doesn't leave you feeling discouraged in any way. You know that you and Nhel do your best to be fair to all. The best thing is to chalk it up to experience and an education expense. Over time people in the community will come to know that anything those guys say is nonsense and not to be believed. Just keep pressing on with a smile. On a happier note, it looks like Lily will be starting her vlog any day now. You'll really know you have to worry about competition from her if she learns how to use the drone, so you might want to keep that locked up.🤪🤣

You have to be more strict.. And react early.. And yes, hiring a whole pamilya is more effective.. They keep each other in check and working because the risk might be that the employer fires them all.. That how even big companies got bit and successful. One of the biggest engineering companies worldwide got successful like that.. They hire relatives or the kids of the employers when they are done with school.. Nobody wants to be embarrassed so everything works smooth.

Kumander, I suggest its better to rid the grass with grass/weed killer ( ie: Round-up/ Run Out/Grass Zero ) or else your budget will blow up just on grass maintenance alone especially during the wet season. Once your selected patches are cleared, plant Carabao grass on them . They grow quick and almost zero maintenance. One thing I learned about Calamancis or most citrus cuttings is when transplanted, they tend to shed most of their leaves and appear to die-out but then they start budding again when they get adjusted. They need water frequently and fertilization (urea) and calcium rich compost. Their young leaves are magnet to certain caterpillars , if not not properly managed can devasted your calamanci.
@KumanderDaot
@KumanderDaot Жыл бұрын
Thanks for this advice... I have been advised against weedkiller as it can damage the seedlings (for the first year)... I've also experienced the leaves dying out then resurrecting! What do you recommend for calcium rich compost... Where can I find that?

Good that people working now have calamansi-planting experience. Keep them. One fair observation, hope you agree, is a supply of water to the plants. Rain water may not be enough. If you have one or two water hoses might a good idea. Well, fertilizers follow, you know that, to augment the soil insufficiency. chillax pod

The adaptivity and total embrace of only in the philippines make me even more in love in the country. Nothing is impossible. I was with a "mariner of the river", some years ago. Imagine manually with your body, sifting through gravel to sell said gravel of different qualities to contractors and businesses. I am genuinly impressed at the sheer work to put food on the table for the family. Getting a "bossman" when it comes to workers is important, pay that guy more, he is a worked but he keep track of things.. Even get one or more of thuse bahay kubos (nipa hut) for some shade. and pay for work done, not in advance.

You handle the situation exceptionally well. I have had my own experiences with Filipino workers, building our house and working on our land. In my experience, out of the 50 or so workers I've dealt with, there was only a handful that I could trust and had some initiative to do a good job. That being said, there are bad apples in every country. We just have to find the good ones. Cheers

Yes calamansi is little bit sensitive, my neighbors have a calamansi farm and they weeding regularly keeping coconut and banana tree is not good for them too. Calamansi farm requires a lot of work too. About workers there will always be complains sadly that is unavoidable expecially when you do not know them personally and they know you are just DAYU, I hope your new workers are better now that can help your farm grow.

Riding Mowers and Push Mowers are available in the Philippines already. It's much better to use push mower than trimmer.

I'm curious if no dig/till methods could work there. It's a big area you have so maybe you'd have to do it gradually, and maybe it isn't the best for trees anyway and more for vegetables in beds, but you could maybe do it around the base of each tree to help cut down on weed growth and help soil quality. I watch a lot of Charles Dowding's vlogs on it and tempted to give it a go on my relatively small plot in Davao Del Sur around my coconut trees when I'm next there. Not sure it's so practical on a larger scale. Thousands of miles away in Wales still, but enjoying your farm videos and learning from your problems. Sorry to see you get some people problems, some people are just lazy or want to take advanatage and that sadly is a problem across the world.
