Today Kory introduced the saddle to Avalon for the first time and works on building her confidence!
Avalon is an 11-year-old sorrel Belgian mare and is 16.2 hands tall. She is newly blind and will need a confident, experienced horse person who can be considerate of her capabilities as a blind horse who is still adjusting. She is not mean, just fearful, and mainly needs confidence building with a firm but gentle hand.
We rescue horses of all species, ages, training levels and colors. No animal is ever turned away at our Open Admission Shelter!

Oh bless her heart, she’s so sweet. She needs so much love and voice reassurance. If I were in the USA, I’d love to take her and just give her the love she deserves. What a beautiful, gentle mare. Her trot was like a rocking horse, you could just melt into her. I really love this horse, I look forward to seeing more training with her and Cory, he’s got such a soft gentle presence, she’s going to come on beautifully. Please give Avalon a warm cuddle all the way from Guernsey, Channel Islands, UK. 🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️

A blind horse can be ridden, but they must trust the person to the utmost. They trust their human to keep them safe.

Avalon is a doll. ❤️ I’ve had blind (diabetic) dogs and if you speak to them consistently, with a little training, they do well. Create a verbal language/cues between the two of you. Actually, a handicap can form a special bond. It does take patience and understanding. Good job Kory.

My thoughts ,too. Verbal commands after calling her name, so she knows it´s for her and doing this with gestures or touching her will help even more! So well done, Kory

She listens well, constantly trying to figure out where Kory is… If she goes to someone who doesn’t mind chatting to her pretty constantly while working with her, she should make a fine everyday horse! So sad to see so many blind horses tho!

What a lovely girl she is! Poor baby, newly blind has to be traumatic.......she is a Belgian, isn't she? I note Kory said HE was going to be the one riding her, and he takes a size large horse........Belgians are my favorite breed, ever since I played beneath one when I was a toddler. So gentle.

Avalon has a nice confirmation, and a lovely step. I hope she ends up with a wonderful home, where someone will take the time to bond with her and build up the trust and confidence she will need to compensate for her lack of vison. She seems to have a sweet disposition, which helps considerably.

It must be so hard for a suddenly blind horse. I am amazed how well they can get used to it with time as a companion, or even trusting the rider enough to ride all over the place. Sure, other senses take over and sharpen, but these poor horses have had mostly such trauma up to being put in an auction and then the horror of an auction, getting pushed and shoved all over the place, homes, families gone, lost in the world, not knowing what for a fate they are to have, and being confronted with blindness at the same time. Poor darlings. Kory it's great you have so much knowledge and how well you get these poor equines time to adjust and being able to help them overcome it. 👍🏻🐎🙏💕 She sure is gorgeous and worth every bit of time and effort it takes to help her- you are all doing such wonderful and needed work - Thank you so much🐎🙏💕

They don't simply put a horse down because medication is expensive, they put a horse down when a condition will escalate to a point where living is suffering or that it's so bad the horse is already suffering every day.
@dreamcatcher3861
@dreamcatcher3861 Жыл бұрын
@@Waywardequestrian no, it’s a combination of conditions, when the horse is overwhelmed and overburdened with lameness that can’t be treated with pain medication, on top of other issues like very little teeth left to graze/eat with under conditioning where they can’t gain weight due to aging, back issues. Anything that can’t be fixed that is going to cause awful suffering. It’s finding the right adopter for a horse that is willing to pay for medical issues like this, just to keep the horse comfortable. I would love it if a sanctuary worked alongside horse plus, who could take on elderly horses and had the funds for their care. They could perhaps do virtual adoption where adopters pay for that horses care until pain medication no longer works. There is a lovely Sanctuary called Fletcher Farms Amarillo, that take pasture horses. They don’t have a lot of horses but most are rescue draft horses from auctions. I love their ethos, they are a full circle rescue shelter and also won’t put an animal through unnecessary suffering but because they have only a few horses, more funds can be spent on medical research and arthritis treatments that can extend their lives. Sorry for long reply, just thinking aloud really.

I'd imagine it's a lot like people in regards to age, genetics or disease along with some specific factors unique to the horse itself. I think in a previous video it was explained that white horses usually end up with some form of skin cancer because they're constantly in the sun VS a darker animal.
