In the final part of our sponsored Pipelife series, we look at the Easy-Lay push-fit polybutylene barrier pipe.
Suitable for all hot and cold plumbing and central heating systems. It can be used in both sealed and open vented systems and has been designed to withstand constant pressure at high temperatures. The combination of low thermal conductivity and high corrosion resistance makes it ideal for use in central heating systems.
5 Reasons to use Easy-Lay Pipe
1. Ultra-Flexible - Our Easy-Lay Pipe is more flexible than other pipes allowing you to manoeuvre the pipe into awkward spaces with complete ease. It's quick and easy to uncoil and the flexible material makes cabling through joists a simple task.
2. Easy to Handle - Easy-Lay Polybutylene Barrier Pipe is made from a soft material with little memory ensuring a flexible and easy to handle pipe.
3. Lays Flat, Stays Flat - When uncoiled the pipe will keep straight and lay flat meaning there are no issues trying to coil the pipe back into place.
4. Barrier Layer - Our Easy-Lay pipe is made up of 5 layer EVOH Barrier. Available in 10mm, 15mm, 22mm & 28mm sizes in both white and grey colours.
5. Full BS7291-Class S and WRAS approvals and comes with our market-leading 50-year guarantee. Specifiers & installers can have full confidence in the quality and reliability of this range
A good alternative to JG Speedfit or Polypipe.

Underfloor pipe has to be pulled from the outside of a roll in the same way as a power cable. Otherwise there will be a 360 degree twist every 3m or so. Shorter lengths uncoil themselves on the job.

Hi there I have a question out of interest, the grey elbow fitting that you mentioned that is not demountable, is this the fitting that commonly contains a green plastic collar with metal teeth that grabs the pipe, I only ask as I have taken this fitting apart before to change the pipe work and found that this plastic collar will slide of in the opposite direction to the teeth grabbing and can then be re installed as you were doing it for the first time. Or did you mean you can’t easily de mount and remount without taking the fitting apart. I only ask in the interest of not doing something wrong in the future. Thanks for your content keep up the good work.
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 4 жыл бұрын
I meant not demountable in as much as it can't be removed and reused without changing the grab ring.
@davidelliott5843
@davidelliott5843 3 жыл бұрын
Some manufacturers offer very slimline fittings which cannot be mounted. They are used when a neater appearance is needed. Most however have a demounting tool or the fitting cap unscrews. The demountable grab rings are not reusable.

Barrier pipe came on because there is a theoretical potential for oxygen to diffuse through the plastic. Barrier pipe is needed to meet some codes but they all work to code when boiler water inhibitors are used. The big advantage for heating is the pipe is run through floor joists as you would power cables. Joists are drilled along centre line so are not weakened.

The stainless sleeves used by Hep20 hardly affect intranet diameter. But the big advantage of a more flexible pipe is you’ll use far fewer fittings. Pipes to radiators run down the wall and loop to the valves. Use valves with elbow tails and the pipes are almost completely hidden.

How do you make this rodent proof, I fitted a plastic pipe ch system off a manifold system that ran through my loft . Once I buried the pipes , all insulated under Two layers of insulation it was party time for the mice , they made nests out of insulation and nibble away at the pipes for a water source , I’ve tried spraying every thing with WD 40 as they don’t like that but it doesn’t stop them . I’ve now got patchy insulation on the pipes and in the loft, it’s a right old mess . Does anyone have any ideas

Nice vid' Roger. You are different you know, give a young guy just coming into plumbing some plastic and he'll have no worries using it. Give a more mature plumber plastic and he might flinch after years of (reliable) metal use. You are really open minded with this, is it because you saw plastic come in and it wasn't good, but you have seen it improve and now you're happy with it? Bit long winded, sorry, just wondering 👍

Hi Chris A lot of plumbers had bad experience with the early versions of plastic pipe. It went brittle and shattered. I took out loads of it and I can't blame anyone for sticking with what they know and trust. I saw John Guest and Acorn and really didn't think they stood any chance of getting their products established but they played the long game. I think most plumbers are now happy to use both and the recent popularity of crimp fittings means we have even more options.

In Derby England, I came across a lot of the Marley plastic pipe. It’s was originally glued together (I believe) it came in during 1979s when copper prices went ballistic and material quality dropped. It did the job mimicking BSP iron pipes. But over the years it’s gone brittle. I carried a piece of hose and worm clips to provide a temporary repair. But once it went brittle the only fix is to replumb the lot. The failure of this stuff gave Hep2O and JG a very hard time. But they stuck it out.

It’s an alternative to JG Speedfit but frankly nicer to use with less ugly fittings. Speedfit is technically demountable but try shifting one that’s been there 20 years. Acorn/Hep20/Polypipe just unscrew. Fit a new grab ring and away you go.I’m not impressed with the new Hep2O shuck needs a demounting tool.
