Today the training process continues with Baron continues as Baron & Bill have their first drive together and we see how they will act together! Baron is our Suffolk Punch draft horse stallion and we have been in the process of training him to work alongside our other draft horses. Today was his first time driving with Bill, as well as his first time on the left hand side!

It never ceases to amaze me how perfectly Jim backs his equipment into the barn so perfectly with horses, not a steering wheel. I watch lots of horsey stuff, and this is the best. I've never seen teams that are stepping in such synchronicity. Brenda's filming and the whole world of these beautifully trained horses...well, I look forward to every single glimpse of your wholesome lives and work that you share with us. Even the thermometer details. Oh, my!

Loved seeing Baron working with Bill. A well trained stud is no different than any other well trained horse. He's young he just needs the work put in same as people say about wet saddle blankets. He's going to make you a fine member of the team. He's beautiful. I am really glad you have him. To see someone appreciate the Suffolk Punch. Maybe you can explain to people the specialness of this Heritage Breed and there not being that many of them available. Henceforth why he's a stallion. Keep up the good work, love to watch your teams work. My late Grandpa used to work for the county back in the day he used a team of draft mares to cut the highways and byways. Showing my age ! Thanks Jim for keeping work horses working.

Just to keep the blades in your new clippers in tip top condition, I would invest in some clipper lube spray that you use before and after clipping the horses manes and tails. It will keep them from rusting and pulling when they start to get dull. It will prolong the life of the clippers too. And get a small brush or use an old toothbrush to sweep away any hair that has collected in the clippers.

I’m sorry for the losses in your family. I laughed out loud when you said hack job. As a hairdresser I completely agree with that statement 😂 Brenda, don’t let Jim near your hair 🤣 with those clippers. I’m so glad Ken is a little better. They did really well together. You’re such a good trainer.

I am 3/4 way through the video and it seems that Baron and Bill are working at the same pace, which must make you happy. They look good together as well.

I agree, it seems like, even at this early stage, they seem to be equally yoked , quick stepping, fast, and swift, maybe slightly wild or a little more risk. Ah ha, But Baron is just a teenager, he will continue to improve.

Nice and clean, less time consuming, easier to harness. We don't wear a tuxedo or ball gown to go work in the garden! Lol!

It’s so funny to watch as you’re backing them in the barn and you say HA and Barron doesn’t move and Bill leans over to nudge him over and Barron starts to paw, you can tell he’s a little confused by the assignment but his licking and chewing at the end shows he’s understanding the job! I want to thank you for your videos because I am new to driving and there’s no one around here to teach me, I’ve had horses for 25 years but no driving experience. So far my Brabant mare has been doing great teaching me the ropes and together we are teaching my coming two year old spotted draft mare how to drive. Your videos sure have been helpful. We plan to do some farming and gardening this year. Keep up the great work and videos I’m learning TONS!

Baron looks like he might be a left side horse. He stood so well at the truck body until you asked him to go. love to watch you back them into the barn . I use to drive carriages in Florida and I love showing off my horses parallel park skills.

I like watching the calm demeanor of the driver. My dad drove a mule "Kit" working up a garden. An "uncle" as we called dad's friend worked a mule and a stud pony pulling a hay cutter and then a rake. He tied a strap to the stud pony's bridle bit back to the hame to minimize his head movement toward the mule. Stud pony's don't like mules! But it worked for him. This is not easy work! Good sleeping work dad called it! Thanks for the videos.

Until a stallion has had mares there is little to worry about if he has been raised right. And even then, he should still be happy to spend the off-season with another male. I think your horses are well mannered and conditioned. In that last backup to put the manure wagon away there was a bit of a kafuffle but that was because Baron through Bill was dragging him around. Baron is still learning about backing in a pair. And yes, they did both look a little out of sorts then. Lol re the thermometer! These things happen when learning about new equipment. My Clydesdale stallion and my Quarterhorse stallion were the same age and lived together in the same pasture from weaning until they were almost 5yrs old. They each began getting mares then but in the off-seasons of every year after that they looked forward to spending the winters together. The clydie would get worked and or ridden 2-3days each week and the QH got ridden most of the other days of each week. Even in old age, way past 20, and no longer getting mares, they still lived together in the same pasture and it turned out they were put to sleep only a few months apart.

A good tail trim is proof positive that tail docking is not necessary. (Especially the extreme ones, that amputate the tail!)

I felt a little nervous watching you hitch these two boys together for the first time. Baron and Bill are beautiful horses and seem well matched in size. I wonder which of the teams (if you took poor Buck into account) are the strongest, or fastest. I pray Ken gets well very soon, I love him. Your videographer does a great job!

I am pleased to learn that Ken is getting better. Cellulitis, is a terrible infection, not only is it painful, but it can spread so rapidly. I hope you can eradicate this problem with his leg.

Sometimes it takes lengthy treatment with several antibiotics to really knock out the infection, especially if it gets lodged in a joint. It can lay dormant for years, only to erupt again with the slightest injury. That is why it is sometimes called "joint ill".

Could not wait to hear how Ken was doing.Glad he is doing better. Both Bill and Baron had quite the pick-up-and-go in the beginning. Then they slowed down even going towards the barn. Great exercise/workout. 5 loads! Their desire to go fast would work years ago If you want to get somewhere fast with a load.

Hope to see Ken back out and feeling better, Yes that team worked very well together and reverse like a 50 year veteran truck diver, I grew up riding with my Dad out hauling hay for the cows, he used horses all through from the 50's into the 70's plowing ,haying, pulling stumps, hauling firewood, sometimes just out for a picnic, miss those days :)

We have between 36 to 43 deer every day in Our yard and about 60 Pheasants. Snow is deep so They stick in yard. I've been blowing paths for Them to travel and We have 135 evergreen trees that They sorta home in.

Jim the Lord was sure with you in buying Baron. You would be dead in the water or have to do your work with the tractor. God bless you and your horses. Lady will need quite sometime after the foal is born to get back in shape.

I also roach the manes, just got done doing that in fact. I just wisp out the tails with a sharp knife, makes a more natural-looking tail. My clippers are an old set of Sunbeams, likely 30 years old from cattle showing days. You are fortunate to have Brenda to head up Baron there! I never like ground driving a frisky team on ice, always worry I'll slip and things get out of hand fast... Funny thing I haven't seen a single deer all winter. They must have migrated to a better climate!

Working men wear workman's clothes. Movie stars wear movie star clothes. These horses are working men, and they wear workman's clothes. Working men don't have time for long beautiful tresses. That belongs on the silver screen. Bill does not have Kenny's patience. He's like "GET OUT OF MY WAY, KID!" I know the time working Bill with Kenny was annoying, but I can see that it did Bill some good. He isn't starting so aggressively as he used to. You may need that brain strap again for a few days of working Bill with Baron, however. He's still wanting to outwalk Baron and outwork him. He was lathered coming in, and Baron had hardly broken a sweat. That said, he seems a bit more relaxed than he used to be. They did really well together. Baron is kind of in the position of a teenage boy back in the day, when there had been sickness and death in the family and he had no choice but to go to work to support the family. The plans might have been to bring him on slowly, but you aren't just playing with your horses. You need them to make a living. He's old enough, and he's just going to have to step up and get the work done. He'll be okay. He'll be tired and sore every night for the first few weeks, but he'll be beautifully fit and strong going into the summer. Look at it as going to boot camp. By the time he's a daddy, he'll have settled into it. If it weren't so cold, a liniment bath at the end of the day would do him a world of good, but by the time it is warm enough, he'll probably be past being sore.

Well Said, I have lived what you described. Baron is closer to 4 than 3, I think he will be 4 by the time field work comes, I forget his birthday, I know Jim don't work them hard b4 4 , it seems we are perfectly on track, I say we, ah ha.😄, I think it may work out just in a nick of time, God like.. by the Middle of June Lady will be coming back, and Duke and Earl may start doing some light chores, by Fall, Baron will be ready for the woods and Jim will be back to having 4 big work horses, Ken, Bill, Lady, and Baron. By this time next yr. , Duke and Earl will be pulling round bails around and we will be all commenting on how cute the new colt is. :-)

You have said several times, you are hoping Bill and Baron moved out about the same speed. For the most of what I saw, they weren't doing too bad. A time or two Baron was behind, but not too bad. Other than his little fit backing up into the barn, he looked really well. He's young and it just takes time. Another great video. Also hope Ken is better soon.

In his defense, his little fit potentially may have been prompted by Bill mouthing him. Bill seems to enjoy Baron, he's been lipping at him since they met.

I'm a long tail girl, but for your purpose, short is so much better to not get tangled! At least you don't dock the bone👏 Maybe Brenda if you get some of those oxygen absorbers in your vitamin or other products, you could throw them in your clipper box to keep them from getting moisture. I'm so glad Ken is getting better. Good workout with the boys💙

That went rather well. I did suspect that you might just have tried to work Bill and Baron together before you had the problem with Ken's leg to cover. Baron worked the left side and with a horse he had never worked with before and you took Bill out of his "comfort zone" too and apart from the little disagreement over the alignment when backing the spreader in, they did well. It would be fair to call that a good result. Ken is slowly and steadily picking up which is another good result. It now looks as though all four of your horses will work together when able and needed even though Baron is in no way ready for heavy work just yet, it is still a good result. A fair reward for the work you have all (Jim and Brenda, and I am not forgetting Petra) have put in.

Are you going to make a horse hair pillow. When I was a kid I had a horse hair mattress it was very comfortable and warm in the winter. Hope your team works good for you.

I am really glad you brought it up first. No, I do not want tail hair, but when you buzz off Baron's mane, can we get little braids of it? Just a little memento to remember his great hair by. Roached is better for working, I think. Cleaner and more comfortable, but he does have nice hair.

I saw a video the other day and a horse that was petting a cat with the skin around it's nostrils and above it's upper lip. It is sort of like humans can wiggle their nose. The horse was able to move the skin on top of his mouth or nose and use it like we open and close our hands. This may help a horse move grass into it mouth.

We bought a mare with a roached mane. It took 20 years to get it grown out and then she got in cockle burs. Dad went and clipped her mane! :(
