That is interesting to know about the radiation in the area. What caught my mind was the fact that they don't want folks to camp there, but folks still do. I am guessing the radiation dose folks receive if any, is small enough to not be of concern or I would think they would close it permanently. This is a beautiful area to ride. Does the forest service in AZ close gates throughout the winter? In New Mexico, it is hard to find forest access since most of our forests get closed from the beginning of the year through mid-April.

There seems to be lots of pockets of privately-held land among the forest lands in Arizona, it could be that they can't close a lot of the roads because they aren't allowed to deny landowners access to their own land.

@@TWX1138 Thanks for the information. I live in New Mexico and most of our forests get closed. So I was wondering if AZ would be an option for forest access in winter.

@@ManzanoManATVAdventures you would do well to inquire with the Apache-Sitgreaves forest office. They should know best. For what it's worth I spent a lot of time around Show Low and Speingerville as a kid but it's been 25 years since I was last in the area regularly.

That gate I passed is usually closed in the winter. I was surprised to see it was open. I have not come across to many closed gates here in AZ. I can only think of a few off the top of my head.

@@TWX1138 thanks. That is some beautiful country all through Show Low and Springerville. My extent of travel through there has only been traveling highway 60 headed back to New Mexico from Phoenix. I appreciate you answering my questions.
