Asbestos was widely used in construction throughout British Columbia until the late 1980s. It remains a threat to workers’ safety today. This video, produced for the BC Labour Heritage Centre, tells the story of asbestos use and the price workers and their families have paid in disease and death.

Thank you for a very informative and poignant video and its message emphasised all the more by the personal account of a family whose father was affected and sadly passed away due to exposure to asbestos. The product was used so extensively in the past in construction that we all need to be vigilant in ensuring it is safely and professionally disposed of today.

2:06 It's the employers and their doctors knowing about it since the mid 1940's that is the worst part for me. It's sounds litigious, even.

We're not allowed to say asbestos at work, we call it cotton candy.

And who among the guilty - both the unscrupulous doctors who signed off and said nothing and boards of executives who suppressed the evidence - have been prosecuted? When greedy self serving behaviour is allowed to trump the basic needs and rights of others, why would we not expect repeats of this sort of behaviour? Clearly, some human beings cannot be trusted to consider the legitimacy and rights of others on even the most basic level. Corporations are still making billions from the sale of cigarettes and tobacco related products - in this industry we see the exact same behaviour. Individuals can behave in the most appalling way. It's the job of the state and those entrusted with the best interests of the people, to deal with such individuals. Right now, they don't seem to be doing that.

Well there you are son, you’re f&$%d. I’d say another ten years or so and you’ll be wishing you’d never seen black asbestos.

This is more risky for long term exposure like those in industry or in constant contact with the material. You gotta be careful but surely you won't have a serious problem with that single or even a small exposure.

Everyone in the western world has inhaled some. Not everyone gets ill. It’s unlikely that would make you ill.
