Great no-frills video Tomislav. My bench grinder was also vibrating until I discovered how to balance the wheel. I welded a small piece of flat bar onto the edge of the grinding wheel's washer. Slowly turn the wheel by hand, you'll notice the heavier part of the wheel always ends up at 6 o'clock. The modified washer is used to balance the grinding wheel. Best grinder upgrade ever!

Thank you for watching Dirk, I have to try that, but I'm on the market for new grinder, this one has great top part but the base is thin plastic and its rubbish, and loud,.... But it does the job once spooled up .... So for now I guess it needs to serve🤗 thank you for support 👍

Thanks for putting this together. I use my own method that I've figured out over the years, kind of a mish-mash of methods I've seen others use mixed with my own experiments and successes, but there are a couple of things in your way that I'm pretty sure will help. Got to try them out.

Thank you Randy , I'm glad you can get something out of it 🤗 I have been like yourself mismatch of every freehand method until stumble by accident this way of holding a gouge in hand..... A lot of steel was wasted but it was worth it🤗 what grind do you use?
@randycosgrove3608
@randycosgrove3608 Жыл бұрын
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning For my bowl gouges I use an "Irish grind" that's somewhat modified. For the spindle gouges a basic fingernail grind. I use the Oneway jig but with a home made pivot and with a platform that I had for the grinder before I started turning. As I said, it's some of this and some of that. I've never tried the asymetric grind that you and Richard use. Not sure if it would work better than what I use or if trying it would just use up even more steel than I've used learning what I use now. I'm a hobby turner so I'll likely stick with what I know.

I'm new to turning and always eager to learn better ways of doing things. My takeaway from your free-hand sharpening method is how much time it saves. Adjusting the damn jig to different tools takes more time than any other aspect of sharpening. I'm going to invest some time and tool steel trying it your way.
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Жыл бұрын
I agree With you.... For me jigs just wasn't an option..... There is platform sharpening that could be a bit easier to master in begining..... Grab an old gouge and practice.... I still messed up but I leave it like that beacuse next time I'll shrarpen it will be fixed and you learn how to get away with different mistakes..... And how it affects a cut.... Thank you for watching 🤗

Super information, I'll come back to this video many times as my tool collection increases 😊 Please, how long does your average bowl gouge or spindle gouge last before needing replacing?
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for watching and support what I do 🤗 Uff difficult to say, every gouge is different steel but on average around 8 months.... But I'm using them to the max,to the very bottom of the flute since I'm not using jig to sharpen... Also these day since I have a few gouges more I rotate them so they last up to a year....

@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning thanks for the reply, very good to know as I've been turning only for a year or so and have nothing to compare the metal usage to. I practiced quite a bit with free hand grinding, using more metal than normal, but now I'm getting it right. My first tools are wearing quick. 😬 (good excuse to buy more😁) Your channel's great. Thanks a lot for the sharpening video. Very informative. A small question: - Everyone sharpens scrapers with an angle of 70, and you said that the angle is 45.Is that right? And why don't you use paper clips with double-sided sharpening?
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning

Thank you Ivan for watching, its around 45 degress, but not Always the same, sometimes its 50-55....I'm not chasing certant angle..... I gotta say I'm not familiar with other part of the question 😀 not sure what paper clips are used for sharpening? Maybe you ment something else?
