Increase Efficiency and Organization by Labeling Tools
Article: www.aconcordcarpenter.com/usi...
Being organized is a way of life for me - it helps me navigate life’s chaos! Imagine a workshop where you can find every tool, jig, and board almost without looking. The secret is using labels on tools.
One aspect that I’ve incorporated into my tool organization is labeling toolboxes and tools. Let me explain:
Labeling Tool Boxes
If you store your tools in their boxes, labeling tool boxes assist you, or someone working with you, to quickly assess which tool you’re looking for. The same principle applies to parts and fasteners.
Using Labels On Tools - Markers, Pens, Label Machine
Labeling tools can be as simple as a black marker, white paint marker, or real laminated labels. I prefer the latter but have used all!
I have three routers and all three wrenches for them look the same, but their not the same. Labeling them saves me from the aggravation of fiddle around trying to find the correct wrench. A simple permanent black marker makes quick work of this.
Using Labels On Tools
Why in the world would you want to label a tool if you know what it is? Well, I’m not talking labeling a vacuum a vacuum. I’ m referring to consumable accessories like vacuum bags, HEPA filters, specialty bulbs, etc.
For example, I mark my workshop Delta Air Filter with the replacement filter bag so I can quickly find the part number to order replacement filter. I do the thing with dust extractor vacuum bags and HEPA filters.
Using Labels On Tools is fast and saves time researching the tool or searching for the manual. Speaking of manuals That’s a story for another day! Read 2 VERY COMPELLING reasons to save tool manuals.

Great video....I have been labeling my tools for years and my shop is well organized. My wife says I am crazy...she said why? I told her...”so when I am dead you will know what the tools are you are going to sell”!

Good Video Rob. Good tips, especially when others need to access the tools or parts, and they don't know your system. It helps to put the system in plain sight. Thanks!

Label the plug end of cords. So you unplug the right tool when needed.

Good tip Rob, I use the label printer to label the shelves and racks of my van , it helps other people put things back in the correct place and at the end of the day I have a quick look in the van and I can see instantly what is missing and go find it. I also use a soldering iron to etch my initials deep into the plastic of power tools and accessories , doesn’t stop them from being stolen unfortunately, but it saves the chargers and batteries getting mixed /confused with other contractors.

Yes! A rule I have for myself is if I have to look it up or figure it out once, I mark/label/write it down/file it. For instance, vehicle consumables like lightbulb numbers, filters, procedures for clearing a warning light, socket sizes get written down on on the back of the owner's manual. Filters, wrench sizes get written near the fastener that needs to be removed to do maintenance on a piece of equipment. I have a folder I keep on a cloud service where I can store PDFs manuals that I mark up on my iPad when I need to reference them. Lastly, a google doc or spreadsheet holds service records, purchase dates, serial numbers and more notes. It all can sound like a lot of work, but it is really not difficult and saves a lot of time. You just need to do it enough so that it becomes a habit, keep it updated, and to use good judgement to only record what is actually important in a place and manner that will be the most convenient when you need to know it.

Loved the tip. As simple as it sounds, I have never bothered to write consumable part numbers on equipment. I do label drawers and I do have all of my manuals in one plastic bin and yes, the bin is marked MANUALS.

Very true. I have 3 stacks of Milwaukee Packout boxes that I take with me for cabinet installs, modifications, and repairs. They are all labeled for me to know what's where. Also all the fasteners at the very top are labelled as well. I can be sure and no guestimating to save time on my screws, and if I have a helper I can be confident with their assistance

I do the same thing Rob with labeling but I also have a bit of fun with my label maker too. I am a huge Festool guy, so I added stereotypical German name labels to all the Systaniers. Like my HKC is Dietrich, my Vecturo is Klaus, my Carvexs are Dirk and Dieter, and so on. It always gets a laugh.

I have a label maker. How do you make your labels stick? Mine seem to peal away or curl when sitting on the shelf here in hot Texas.

On some surfaces that seem to not stick, I cover the label with a clear tape, being wider & longer than the label itself.

Be careful with labels, if certain tools want to identify as something else, you cant assume their identities. Discrimination. All jokes aside, its a good tip, not only to save time but also for convenience, it might also prevent you picking up the wrong box, loading it into the truck and finding out on the job which is hours away from home, that its the wrong tool.
