I made all the handles for my carbide tools. I like to make the wood just slightly bigger than the copper sleeve, then heat the copper sleeve so that it slides over the end of the tool and shrinks as it cools. I've never had one loose or come off.

I've made some tool handles too, and know the satisfaction that is achieved. I got added joy from them because I made them from Wattle, a native Australian tree, which I planted, grew and harvested in my own backyard. These handles went onto home made tools, too. Cheers.

Thanks for sharing! I'm wanting to make to custom dovetail tenon scrapper and was debating on making the tang round. This solves that problem!
@LisaRamlow3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lindsey! This is definitely a good and secure way to use the rectangular tangs. Might be even better if I’d used a 1” coupling and left the tenon larger, but these aren’t monster scrapers so I think I’m gonna be ok 😁

Nothing better than having homemade tool handles. Can't beat custom handles/tools. Thanks for sharing your take on how to make them. That's the same way I make mine if I have a rectangular shank on the tool. Be careful with that table saw. I suggest using a riving knife on your throat plate. It's really important to prevent kickback. Once you've had a close call, you won't rip without one. A guard is really beneficial too but I can understand not using one for a video demo. Stay safe and happy turning!
@LisaRamlow3 жыл бұрын
Hi Greg! I need to see if I can get the roving knife separately for this saw-it’s integrated to this monstrosity of a plastic blade guard that is just not practical so I took that assembly off shortly after I got the saw. Which is close to 20 years ago now (wait, what!? 😳 No wonder my hair is so gray! 😂) Thanks for watching 😁
@JamesBondDZero7Mi63 жыл бұрын
Lisa, Your saw looks like mine which is a Ridgid. Mine has that riving knife/blade guard combo too but I pin the swinging guard up sometimes when it's in the way. I need to look into making a custom throat plate with a riving knife/splitter. I've seen them as simple as a piece of wood glued into insert or store-bought like this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZshjY5plv8yYj2Q.html I highly suggest some kind of splitter. I know too many people who have lost fingers from not using them. One guy I know had gloves on and got pulled into the blade. it was ugly. I hope this helps.

Beautiful handles. I should make some for my tools. If you want a heavier handle, drill out the end and fill it with something heavy like sand or lead shot. Turn a cap for the end and glue it on, nice contrast piece.

Hi Chris, I’m glad you found it useful - it’s a great way to make the rectangular tangs fit snugly. RoboHippy says you can drill a slightly smaller round hole and bang them in but that doesn’t seem like a very secure mounting to me

I don't know why, but I always read your name as Lisa Rainbow...... Love the glue spreader. Being an old concrete finisher, I have always used popsicle sticks or putty knives to spread glue. Now I have to see if I can find that silicon spreader you use. I also like seeing what improvements people make on my ideas. I do have some old tools that had thin brass ferules on them. They always seem to crack off of that divot that is used to seat the ferule. Maybe they need thicker material.... I have taken to using a standard hex wrench to size the tenon for the ferule. They are just a hair over the exact size so you can get them off and on a nut the head of a bolt. You can actually burnish the surface of the tenon with them, which in theory, will let the wood expand a tiny bit with weather changes.... I did go down to Arizona for the AAW Symposium some years back, and all my ferules got loose. Some did expand out again, and some are still loose....
@LisaRamlow3 жыл бұрын
Silicone utensils are pretty much everywhere these days -I’m pretty sure I got this double-ended one at Dollar Tree and I like having size options for the spreader part. Betty Crocker brand I think 😂 Not sure I’m following the hex wrench tenon sizing part... My mom worked for the school district as an instructional aide and one of her jobs was to be the playground attendant for recess and all the kids called her Mrs.Rambo 😂

I'm slightly jealous regarding your gift but those handles are really looking very nice. To get the ferrules(?) on mine these days, I'm cutting the handle slightly smaller and use some epoxy. I'm undercutting the mating surface on the handle to get a better fit, at least optically it looks better that way. Also it is better to use a saw to cut the end that goes on the handle; using a pipe cutter curves the tube inwards, leaving you with a sharp edge and a smaller diameter than the tube has. Or you have to use a file to straighten out that side.
@WoodScamp3 жыл бұрын
Great tip re the ferrules, thanks!
@LisaRamlow3 жыл бұрын
Hey Leo! I’m such a lousy saw-er. I know that’s not a word, tho it exists in LIsa-Speak! 😂 Anyway, I can’t saw a straight line so I figured the tubing cutter would be a safer bet. I didn’t notice it rounding the coupling off so it must be toward the inside? I’ll have to look at them tomorrow. In any case, I’ll keep that in mind next times I have to make a handle. I was pretty floored when I opened that care package - I must be doing something right 😁

Hi Thomas! I’m sorry things are still not back on track there. We’re doing ok here, though Michigan has seen a huge in trade in covid cases over the last several months - I’m grateful I was able to get my 2nd vaccine shot a couple of weeks ago and I should be mostly protected starting this Saturday. I’ll still wear a mask and stay away from people as much as I can but I am looking forward to seeing my family. It’s been a long time. I wish I could send you some wood to play with!

@@LisaRamlow Hi Lisa. The situation here is slowly, very slowly, too slowly, improving. I'm amazed how between january and April, the US went from total wreck to 200 mil doses injected. We in Belgium (11 mil people) barely reach 25% of population partially vaccinated. Bureaucracy at its best ! Anyway thanks for the nice offer. I'm preparing a2/3 walnut-1/3 maple bowl but I'm still struggling with sharpening my tools. The Wolverine jig I ordered is... in back-order. Supplies in tools are slowed down as well.
