Very interesting about the fibrous splintery texture of palm wood. I believe that's due to the fact that palm is a monocot (other monocots being grasses, corn, sugar cane, asparagus, and so on), whereas true woody plants are dicots. In monocots, the xylem and phloem are scattered around the whole stem in bundles, while they come in concentric rings just inside the bark in dicots (and completely disappear in heartwood).

That's what I love about projects like these. The finished product isn't perfect, but the experience acquired is more valuable than the outcome. Keep up the good work!

Looks good... but as you noted in the beginning, you're turning with carbides, which means you're scraping rather than cutting - fibrous material like this is much more likely to tear out with scrapes, but with cutting tools (ie: gouges, skews) you'd get much less tearout, you could even shape something like this with a roughing gouge quite nicely. As for drilling the hole - I wouldn't have gone straight in with the big bit, I'd have drilled a smaller hole first to give the large hole somewhere to center.

OMG Pro-Tech chop box. First one i seen on KZfaq. Back in 97 i went back up north to Chicago to remodel my sisters bathroom and picked up the Pro-Tech miter saw, 8" drill pres, and 9" band saw for $225.00. I still have them all till this day.

That project came out really nice and I like how you are laminating the wood together at an angle. I have both carbide cutters and traditional tools and I just use what feels right to me depending on the project. Either way, it's turning. Great job!

Great handle Grady!!! I had the same problem drilling my first handle... about 1/3 down I came out the side of the handle! After that I used the Jacobs chuck to drill the next one. Hiya, next time you are trying to drill a big holes by holding a free hand drill, first make a small hole with, say a 2-3mm drill. That way, when you go to drill out the larger diameter hole, the drill will automatically want to find its way down your pilot hole. I hope you don't mind, but i notice that you kept changing your foot position when you were making the cut. We all do that when we are travelling along a long spindle length. However, next time, try taking the tool away from the wood, move your feet to the new position, then find your cut on the wood again to continue. You don't need to stop the lathe, just take the tool off the wood. You will find if you try this, you will not get ridges in your cut.

I've got three handles glued up to turn tomorrow. If they turn out as nice as this I'll be tickled😊 2 of them are oak and poplar, the other one is a piece of silver maple. Wish me luck! 😊

Ironically, Chris from the Clickspring channel buys commercial wood handles for the metal tools he makes in his shop. He's in Australia so I think trading back and forth wouldn't be worth it.

Hey Grady, it looks very nice,. I had the same issue with centering the hole for the tool and I was using a drill chuck in my lathe. I think a steady rest would be very helpful in holding the piece in place while drilling. PSI has some decent priced drill chucks.

Grady a great job I really like your attitude to your wood turning one doesn't really need all of the stuff you see guys on you tube using. If we are not careful we will need a second job to support our hobby, I have a minister for war, finance and tourism at my place that keep my urges to by more tools in check

nice handle ......when it comes to drilling make sure you have a centre reference. you canuse the drill bit in you chuck and use the tail stock to advance the wood thus drilling the hole.slowly but accurately......do try to purchase a jacobs chuck if you can it will make life easier on the lathe. if you cant get a chuck then use a handle drilled to suit drill bit and epoxy the drill in to use

Off hand I can think of at least 80,000 other people with that same knowledge, but we're a pretty close-mouthed group, so I wouldn't worry about it getting around. But it is a great looking handle. I'm looking forward to making some handles. I've got a set of six carbide tools with one handle, arriving tomorrow. I think I will use speckled alder, because that is what I cut down for a tree last week, the day after my lathe arrived. (My neighbor hasn't missed it yet.) 😇.

Hey, that looks great! If you wanted / needed the Palm wood to look tidier, I would think that epoxy would be a good bet (it could be a filler and a finish)

With the drilling I can think of 3 options: 1. Hold the drill in the chuck and align handle with the tailstock and crank it in. (you can use a spurdrive in the tailstock to stop the handle spinning) 2. If the handle is stable enough, tool a divot to start the drill 3. If not, start with a small drill and go up the sizes

Palm wood should be stabilized before turning. This eliminates the possibility of ithe fibers separating like you described. There are many people who use it for making pens.

Since you asked... I think you would have had better luck using a very small bit to begin drilling into the handle. Then you would have a pilot hole that the larger bit would follow in. The other thing, I would be just a bit concerned that a handle with glue joints could split at the glue joints under load. It may not happen but I would choose function over beauty in this case. The handle does look good and thanks for the video.

I like the copper idea myself but being a soft metal it wouldn't hold up to my purpose of it. I'm custom building some tool handles myself for chisels. I'm going to use some 1" steel pipe on the striking end of mine with a tension pin thru it.

I like that you give feedback about the species of wood and how they turn. I do feel like you point out too many of your own errors. Chances are we won't notice too many.

Curious, I keep seeing people make these with square bar stock, wouldn't it make more sense to use round stock? I guess you bought a pre-done bar, I'm curious if this presents problems when using the tool, if you have issues re-entering a cut if you choose to use it at an angle?

I too have epicallyied failed when attempting to drill a handle by hand, I also know that it will never be seen, it still bugs me. I just try to live with it. Nice job nonetheless

Very nicely done with a difficult wood.A lot of foks handle dedicated drill bits. I have gotten far more versatile use with my morse taper drill chuck hand held or in the tailstock. It is in constant use for depth holes in bowls tool handles etc. Great economical carbide scource: carbidewoodturningtools.com/ , inovatived carbide tools handled or unhandled and of course Capt'n Eddy's KZfaq & website. He has just what you mentioned; packages with mild steel stock, tapped, drilled, with several carbide cutters thrown in. You have the creative spirit, doubt you will ever be able to stop now.

Grady, First I think it looks Great. It's funny how we can be our own worst critics isn't it. I'm not certain if it would work for this application, but in several of Andrew Klein's videos kzfaq.infovideos he uses a CD to align his drill to get a straight hole. Might be worth a try next time.
