Fumi Kaneko manages to turn that stiff, wretched Gran Pas Clasique variation into something light, delicate and varied as she switches from regal and militaristic to feather-light in a heartbeat. It's the first time I've liked that variation, thanks to her!

She did a wonderful job, and so did Marianela Nunez. The first time I saw this variation was Sylvie Guillem doing it on the program “Ballerina” hosted by Natalia Makarova. As a young dancer it took my breath away, on a level I’d never seen before at the time (circa 1988). It set the bar: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f72Hg5udkqrXiHU.htmlsi=MqzDPwqHIGq6Urxm

@ntricker
@ntricker 9 ай бұрын
I am familiar with Kimin Kim. And personally, I prefer Vadim. He has not been nicknamed ‘Vadream’ (by other dancers) for nothing. In addition, he holds the current record for being the youngest laureate of the Prix Benois de la Danse, and also for being the only dancer, along with Svetlana Zakharova, to have been awarded it twice (with Russian judges). Oh, and has also won the Benois-Massine prize (along with Zakharova the same year). Nikolai Tsiskaridze has described him as one of the world’s best dancers, so he should most certainly not be dismissed because you prefer another dancer. We all have our favourites and our preferences and just because we like one dancer above others doesn’t mean that we should be dismissive of other dancers. I admire Kimin Kim hugely - he is an amazing dancer - but for myself I prefer Vadim’s beautifully refined dancing and he is an amazing actor in dramatic roles. Having said that, I would never describe any dancer as the ‘undisputed’ best - someone will always dispute it 😂 and it is something that is very much down to personal preference anyway.

@@EVZYL I am, but I have seen Vadim since his young years with Daria and he was always growing in a balanced way, never circus oriented...in my days we had Erik Bruhn, Rudolph Nureyev (later Barisnikov) and Vassiliev (later Gordeyev and Manuel Legris, Laurent Hilaire etc...) many many great talents...I put Vadim with Erik !

what he does is so incredible to my eyes. I am no dancer nor ballet expert at all, but I can't help but think that he is so tall and have so much muscles, but still when he lands from jumps, I have the feeling I am watching a baby kitten, he looks so weightless! Ups, way too many "but"-s in my writing, I hope it's clear.

VERY enjoyable to watch all the dancers. I did get chills watching the DNB dancers Swan Lake. I’ve seen it so many times, but have only gotten chills watching Altynai Asylmuratova and her husband. But I’ve added these dancers to my favorites for this Pas. Also, Fumi and Vadims excellence can never be overrated. They dance so lightly and with such perfect technique, I get so much out of watching them💓Overall a good performance for the Don Q pair..but a little off balance at times, and off pointe in eschappe for the female dancer.

One has different tastes, sometimes even preferring Botticelli to Da Vinci or Michelango, Picasso to Braque or Dali, etc...to many Vadim is like a new Erik Bruhn even the physical appearance that is a great gift you receive or didn't...there was Fernando Bujones in the same line but he was less versatile and danced less choreographers works than Vadim, who whatever he touches he grows and the ballet benefits ! a rare gift indeed!

Thank you to Hugo Marchand and Dorothée Gilbert for giving us some drama, showing their mastering of this pas de deux and their deep connection, demonstrating how dance is a langage leading to emotion and sense. Thank you to Muntagirov and Kaneko to show us how technique can be a way to beauty and sense. I'm sorry to say that in those galas some dancers chose empty choregraphy that just make them machines. It's a pity to see this amazing Shale Wagman wasting his time in this awful Flame of Paris. Dance and dancers, and audience, deserve better.(and ...a better floor)

It's a shame the Ballet world became so atrophied that they don't realize technique is NOT a viable art-form. Retreading the same old Minkus/Pugni et al tunes gets boring real fast. Especially as that is what "ballet stars" have been producing for the last 3 decades..........How long does a pirouette, fouetté, arabesque and empty mime gestures have life left in them. They are all way past their expiration dates. Meanwhile all other forms of dance have surpassed them in techniques, skills, passion, creativity, style and art. Get your heads out of the mirror and start looking around .......

Step into a world of grace, beauty, and artistry as you immerse yourself in the enchanting realm of classical ballet. With its rich history and exquisite movements, ballet has captivated audiences for centuries, transcending time and culture. Every delicate pirouette, every powerful leap, and every intricate arabesque tells a story that resonates with emotions and themes both timeless and universal. The dancers' commitment to perfection and their dedication to mastering each precise step create a breathtaking visual spectacle that leaves spectators in awe. From the elegance of "Swan Lake" to the romance of "Romeo and Juliet," classical ballet productions transport us to different worlds, allowing us to experience the heights of human expression through movement. The sumptuous costumes, elaborate sets, and intricate choreography all come together to create an unforgettable sensory experience that lingers long after the curtain falls. Yet, it's a shame that some people still can't fully appreciate the magic that classical ballet brings. Amidst the intricate footwork and soaring leaps, there's a world of dedication, discipline, and passion that dancers pour into every performance. The emotional depth and sheer athleticism displayed on stage deserve our recognition and respect. Whether you're a seasoned ballet aficionado or someone experiencing the magic for the first time, classical ballet has a way of touching hearts and stirring the soul. So, why not embrace the opportunity to witness the artistry, passion, and dedication of ballet dancers as they bring stories to life on stage?

@@worldballetstars After 4 decades of seeing them same thing over and over and over again, with the only differentitation an extra turn or a slightly (by mm) bigger arch. the emptiness and repetitiveness of these war horse gala numbers is suffocating. Music is slowed down to unnatural tempi to accomodate terrible unmusical dancing (got to make allowances for the tricks, right ?). A frozen smile or empty cavalier gesture do not make art. 5 to at most 15 traditional classical romantic ballets do not resonate anymore with these times, they are devoid of charm and styte and frequently feature rather stale and ill-judged contemporary choreography masquerading as " in the style of". Sure there are still some good Sleeping Beauty productions......but Swan Lake and Nutcracker usually feature large chunks of questionable filler choreography. When Kenneth McMillan is the most "creative thing" on the stage (and how old s Manon by now ???). Ballet becomes a vampire's victim drained of life. Yup i know ballet quite well, but emotional depth is not exactly the quality that comes to mind. let's get that extra pirouette in and pass that off at emotional depth. As for the sheer athleticism.........even ballroom dancing heaven forbids -became as athletic. And as for urban dancing, it left Ballet gasping in the dust. And i won''t start on the standard meaningless nervous wriggling and ticks that pass for 70 % of modern dance and choreography these days. Dance is great, but it can do with a lot more self reflection and humility.

@@ntricker I like ballet plenty, it was my job for twenty years. That said as anyone in the theater knows, an audience is allowed to be critical. And we can be critical towards the "art" -form as a whole and this preoccupation with empty technique and not very musical virtuosity dancing without losing sight of the bigger picture. I'm sure plenty of people like it, plenty of people like MacDonalds and soccer too.

Well, I would agree with you on galas for the most part - taking a pas de Deux or whatever out of context can often be bland and it’s a reason I don’t generally bother with galas (I watched this because I wanted to see Kaneko and Muntagirov). However, there are plenty of ballets around with classical grounding (any of the Macmillan ballets, for instance, or Ashton, who always stamped his own style on the choreography) that make use of beautiful classical dancers to tell a story - often a very strong one (e.g. Mayerling).
