Being on an aircraft carrier "touring" the world on deployments with the U.S. Navy is much different than being a passenger on a cruise ship. One is shitty work and living conditions with long hours, the other is a vacation.

Very true. 1952, USS Fechteler, San Diego to Newport Ri. Many port calls, usually for a few days. Really great. Of course we also had to patrol off N. Korea and piss China off by violating what they called their contiguous zone. After each such intrusion China would lodge their 7,415 (or so) grave complaint. That was 52. I don't think we would do that now.

Good points, also get a good travel agent! As we say, "there is no such thing as a bad cruise, but there are cruises that are bad for the wrong people." Ex. like it was said, If you are a Carnival fan , do NOT sail on Cunard!

We did the 2023 Princess World Cruise. Be careful when booking excursions when you are tendered. Also be prepared for cancelled ports. We had 6 or 7 cancelled due to weather. We did a little more than 1/2 independent excursions & the rest thru the cruise ship. Maybe 6-7 were walk off and let’s see what we want to do. Definitely, a trip of a lifetime.

I watch these but can’t imagine they’ll ever be factors for me to consider. At the moment my dream is to get discount economy flights from Australia to a port city in Europe and then look for a sale for an interior cabin on a repositioning cruise across the Atlantic. Still doesn’t hurt to dream 100+ day cruise around the world still remains the bucket lister

Something to note, even if the ship’s WiFi is too poor quality for video calling you can always do an audio call with Skype, FaceTime, etc. much less bandwidth heavy. Source: I used to live in a place with horrible internet and used Skype regularly in spite of it.

Another great video Gary. The point about the smaller ships getting closer to the ports was an excellent one to point out as I am sure this will catch many people out. That could lead to some major disappointment not knowing you could have a 90 mintue trip to get to where you thought you already were.
@tipsfortravellers6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes really key. On the first one we did we were on QM2 and as so big was a pain in a number of ports !
@barbaraf2715 жыл бұрын
That was a conclusion I came to after a 75 day cruise around the Pacific. A few ports we were stuck quite away from the main cities as the ship was too big to get in. Can make shuttle cost a bit pricey! Also there are more coaches to cater for the numbers on the tours.
@boatlover18753 жыл бұрын
Tip regarding technology. Get adapters for the foreign plug in you stateroom For example, if from the US, get an adapter for the European plug but do your research about what you can plug into it. It will basically just change format of the plug so your US plug will fit. Most electronics like computers can deal with this, the "block" will say something like 110-220V. Also, if you have a charging block with USB plugs, I've never had a problem. Don't plug something like a hair dryer or fan into it though. Gives you an extra outlet. There is often an extra US outlet behind the TV where it is plugged into. Not sure how the reverse works.

Very interesting. Possibly, if one goes on a cruise, first of all and for most, the ship in itself must be the destination and the object of desire, as well as the sea. …As visiting for sightseeing: most of the places are much more convenient to be visited by plane - train - bus and there is no time limitation for the stay compared with the cruising dry land / port stints… Though, of course, it is all very very personal. Thank you, Gary!
@tylenerose70316 жыл бұрын
Petr Frizen I feel the same way. I choose a cruise holiday for the experience of being on a ship and at sea. I don't care what the itinerary is, and I rarely even bother leaving the ship at ports. I do enjoy visiting new places and cultures but I'd much rather take a "normal" holiday and explore the place in my own time, and not be restricted to the ship's schedule.

Another thing to look for is washer and dryers for self service. It would be a horrible expense to pay for laundry service
@AWWx25 жыл бұрын
If one doesn't have enough clothing to get through a 3 week or 3 month cruise without doing laundry, or cannot afford a $50 a week laundry bill, perhaps taking a long cruise more than 6-10 days is NOT for you. Some people on these cruises spend $50 a night on a bottle of wine.

We couldn’t do this, cruising is great we just finished a cruise in Japan. Although, I don’t think it gives a true impression of world travel. Ports are built for tourists and are not very authentic to the true culture of a country. With that said, we will continue to do cruises here and there it’s a nice break from the chaos of buses, trains and planes around the world.

If you're wondering about prices, well, it's one of those "if you have to ask, it's too much", but figure costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $100,000 USD. Plus, of course, any potential lost income from taking half a year or more off. World Cruises are really aimed at the same demographic that one of the tips here is squarely aimed at: people who need to be convinced to make the most out of their mobile devices.
@barath45455 жыл бұрын
Not true on prices. Cunard was $28,000 quote for the GF and I for a 132 day world cruise in the inner cabins (dont care for views in room as you can go on deck) and just $12,000 on another line (but that might have been per person) for 119 days. If you rent, then yes, that money is lost on rent if cannot sub-lent, but if you buy, professionals can rent it out for you or you can AirBnb it longterm. Work, yes, you lose that, but in the western world outside the US, you can use a maternity leave for the women and vacation and paternity leave time combined for the man. Or you can work halftime remote as an IT professional if the company will let you. Total loss of money can be as low as $35,000 if even that.

Great video. My dream is to take a world cruise as soon as I retire, which will be in 9 years, 51 weeks and two days from now. LOL!!!! The more sea days, the better. I am in good health and good shape, but I am a Type 1 insulin-dependent diabetic. It seems that most of the world cruises are around 100 to 120 days, so I would need to make arrangements to bring a lot if insulin with me. By then I will be no the US medicare system, so I'm sure it will be a pain in the a**.
@tipsfortravellers6 жыл бұрын
Nice countdown! As you say looks like some planning on the insulin which many people must have done. Hopefully someone who has will see this and post what they did
@AWWx25 жыл бұрын
Repetitive insulin injections or pills are available with prior arrangement with your physician's cooperation. There are doctors and nurses on-board for all these trips who will gladly dispense 10-15 day supplies. OR, you arrive at a clinic one or two times a day to get or your medications, lots of ways to arrange this for passengers and crew..speaking as a former nurse practitioner on a worldwide cruise ship for 3.5 yrs; we dealt with Americans and others who needed daily insulin, self-injected or otherwise. There is a cost, usually for all passengers who need this service, paid-or estimated up-front before the voyage starts for people without national medical insurance who still had to pay a daily or weekly service fee. Ships are well-equipped with several insulin treatments 24/7. Some people on-board are actually diagnosed for the first time with Diabetes type 2 while on-board, consults with land physicians happen, treatment courses are scheduled while the passenger is on-board. Watch diet, do exercise, reduce weight a year before, some passengers with type-2 can actually be non-insulin dependent if type-2.......consult your physician to make sure all arrangements can be made for your condition....most cruise lines know that most diabetics who come on-board are overweight, just telling you, but we can deal with most diabetic conditions on-board, no matter what. Remember, most of the service on these ships involves a high level of sugar, fats, and alcohol for most passengers so you will have to self-monitor, or just sample some of the fare, not have entire meals with our special offerings. A person with the diabetes disability can enjoy our trips, but there are cautions and pre-boarding preparations one needs to consider before embarking on any of our trips. I wish you a happy and healthy trip, wherever you want to travel.

Just went on my second cruise. Never never never again. What a waist of time, effort and money. You spend some days at sea, and if there's naff all that interests you on board, you're imprisoned with no way of getting off the ship unless you jump... Then if you dock you'll probably have about max 6hrs ashore. That's just not long enough to explore places. I'd rather go THROUGH a country than go round it. I want to see a country from the inside not from 20k looking at a coastline. Thank goodness I'm not like everyone.... Enjoy your cruising.

And whatever vacation you want to go on I would recommend researching it first. There are cruises that spend more than 6 hours. If you aren't really happy with it I wouldn't spend the money. When we cruise we experience the ports and see what we liked or dislike. We have flown back to a specific port just to spend some time in that country. View it as a sample plate. But once again, whatever way you want to travel you should research it first.

Dumbest comment ever. The point of this video it to focus ON THE CRUISE not to remind people of their home or pet ownership responsibilities. If he has to remind you to get someone to feed Fido then you clearly shouldn't be cruising. Should he also remind people to turn off the iron, pay their car insurance, hold the mail, have the lawn mowed, etc etc etc. Where does it end?
