In the countdown to the tournament which gets under way on Sunday November 20, Jamie Carragher is predicting a mouth-watering final after playing Telegraph Sport's interactive predictor.
Carragher, the former Liverpool and England international centre-back who featured at two World Cup finals - 2006 and 2010 - has predicted that Southgate's side would finish top of their group despite it being "tougher than what people will think".

And to dismiss Iran so easily when they nearly stopped both both Portugal and Argentina in the last two world cups. They’re a defensively sound team. Frankly speaking, most of the USA team also play in European club teams. They usually make it out of the group stage. Belgium don’t have in-form Hazard and Lukaku. I think Trossard and Batshuayi will be starters. De Bruyne is insane though and will likely do it himself. Not the same as 2018 at all though. Canada and Morocco won’t collapse to them like Tunisia and Panama.

Exactly! I laughed out loud at England being in the semi-final and Germany out of 16…also as much as I love Ronaldo, Portugal in the final is a bit of a stretch and don’t think Argentina would pass Brazil either tbh….now anything is possible in football, but to say this is ur prediction based on current performances is hilarious

@@altguitardemos6608 in previous tournaments usually association would change coach after qualifications and get involved in squad selections so as long as i remember atmosphere was always bad at actual tournaments despite winning qualif. tournaments easily vs top selections. Now we have really perfect situation in every aspect, and also key players are in form of their lifes and coming into this WC sttaight from club season.

Yeah, I look at Portugal, and despite their wealth of talent (possibly in top 3 of best group of talents), their tactics and coach will be their downfall as their tactics rely on a very aging Ronaldo.

@@andresantos7120 Yes that is what I meant. Santos' tactics are basically pass to Ronaldo and he'll shoot. That might've worked well before but nowadays, they would be better off with tactics that do not centre around Ronaldo, as Ronaldo isn't even Portugal's best striker, much less their best player. He's aging, and he is not the same world class Ronaldo he was in a few years ago. This tactic alone will be the reason Portugal will fail at the World Cup. They would be better off playing either Felix, Jota or Leao upfront with a more team based tactic, but to do that, Santos needs to be let go. They have such a wealth of talent, such as Dias, Costa, Cancelo, Bernardo, Jota, Leao, Felix, Neves, and so many more, so setting up their tactics to focus on Ronaldo is a decision that won't win trophies at all. The sooner Ronaldo's gone, the better.

for some dumb reason all europeans are picking ecuador last....when african teams are very disorganized and yea its south america. ALso love the Lewandowski inclusion when saying poland will advance when last world cup he scored zero goals/ and he is older and they were dropped first round with an easy group compared to mexicos in 2018. Mexico is not playing well but same thing happend in 2014 and we advanced. Mexico have experienced players and i think its wingers will run past polands tall slow cbs . Ecuador is not an easy team to play so i think they can beat senagal and quatar.

People always pick the favorites in these predictions and It never turns out that way. Smaller teams always put up a good fight as this is a rare chance where they can show themselves in the big stage with billions watching. Japan, Korea, Costa Rica, Mexico for me will do very well.

There are so many variables that can upset a whole tournament. A penalty, an injury, a red card, and the ever dreaded penalty shoot out, that the obvious selections never quite work out. There is always at least one of the big teams that get kicked out in the group stage. And there is always at least one team that perform wildly above expectations. That is what makes this tournament so thrilling ! And that is why I know that Jamie Caragher will have got this terribly wrong.

I think Canada will be that dark horse. They dominated qualifiers against Mexico and USA and they have good talent Alphonso davies and jonathan davids. Tbh I think they have more chemistry than they due talent. Compared to USA and Mexico they're lacking but it feels like that groups of players are play well together. IDK but people are heavily underestimating Canada.

Is ok when they play everyday together , but the national team doesn't have so much time to practise together. They still have a good chance to get to the final, because this world cup will be full of penalty shoot outs.

Australia will progress past the group. There are some phenomenal things happening in that squad. Pity Rogic wasn’t selected but those boys can go further than what this goose suggests.. England won’t go close, Belgium will do well, and his clear bias against the Germans is amateurish. Won’t be anything like that in the knock outs. As a portuguese I would love to see Portugal vs Argentina in the final, but to be honest I don't know if we will go that far... Yea individually we are one of the best looking squads but when we play together under the current coach it doesn't work out somehow. Hopefully, our defense and midfield will make it up for a more lacking attack but we will only see in the group stage. If I had to pick a team to win it would probably be Brazil

That's what i see from most european teams this year, there's a lack of colective play. Seeing teams like France or England being mid with the quality of players they have is devastating. Denmark and Croatia work well as a team, that's why i put them on top. Brazil and Argentina have it both ways: they have great quality of players, they are solid as a unit with Tite and Scaloni in command and they have a Neymar and Messi that are playing AMAZING. While everything could happen i can see, on paper, Brazil or Argentina winning the World Cup.

Last 2 major tournaments has seen plenty of upsets early, and those were in familiar conditions - have to think a Winter World Cup, in a hot Qatar, is going to play a factor as well. I expect this to be a World Cup full of surprises

Argentina wouldn't pass the group round. They are not as good as the 1986 team. They were thrashed 3-0 in 2018, today they lost to an Arab nation. I don't know why people put so much credit on this poor and almost bankrupt nation. It's just reputation, in reality, they maybe are slightly better than Ghana, Cameroon, or Tunisia.

Its kind of unpredictable, because the players are not playing at the end of a hard season, but in the middle of it. Players have their teams tactics active and less national team. Players are more fit, but teams that play longer together may be more productive.

Also these guys completely disrespect the Asian teams in Japan and South Korea. South Korea has Son, who tbh probably wont carry them out of the groups, and Japan doesn’t have any superstar player, but they are a very good unit. Putting them last in their group with no hesitation is insane.
