I...well shit. I'd not heard of his passing. Hornfischer is arguably why I love naval history to the extent that I do. While my field of interest is mostly golden age of sail and earlier, his WW2 work sent me down the rabbit hole that is naval (and WW2) history. O7 to an absolute legend. RIP.

And here's me just finding out about this now. Last Stand was the very first book I purchased when I got a Kindle. Just amazingly captivating, even to someone like me that didn't serve in the Navy.

Managed to citadel a Tirpitz from a frontal angle with my Warspite...asked on the NA forums how it was possible and it turns out that at a similar angle to where you can easily citadel a yamato, the Tirpitz and Bismarck have this tiny spot that's not covered by the turtleback that if I was intentionally aiming for, I'd never hit, but for RNG rolled the dice and 3 out of my 4 shells went into this exact location at near point blank range and blew them up.

The turtle back armour doesn't cover the bulkheads. It's not just a tiny spot, but the entire front and rear. Most non-american and especially German ships have poor bulkhead armour. If you get to angle where the bow isn't an autoricoshet but the bulkhead angle also doesn't get too steep you'll be able to citadel them even with some of the cruisers. But as you say, if rng says your shells must fan out in a v-shape and miss the target completely then... Just wait a bit, (Dave what do I do if I'm bottom tier with shit rng... NO!! Also, what does that have to do with uninstalling wows and raging in forum)

I guess Clyde was lucky to be a top tier BB ship in a game really - as any time I try to play a T8 BB, I always end up in a T10 battle . . . So I either can't reach the BB's that are shooting at me at the start, or I get pounded by HE cruisers or DD's - or the T10 CV always makes a B-line for me first . . . The MM still needs to be sorted out - but I can never see it happening now really . . .

You hit me right in the feels at the beginning there Jingles! I read/listened to Neptune's Inferno per your recommendation (I have been an Audible member for years). I purchased the book because I liked it so much and gave it to my dad to read. I knew that my grandfather (dad's dad) was a US Marine in the Pacific but I didn't know much about his service history. After reading Neptune's Inferno and a bit of research, it turns out my grandfather served at Henderson Field in November 1941. The exact details are a bit murky but presumably he was on Guadalcanal for the major battles there and with a small nudge in the right direction, we found out a little of our family history and how we fit into US WWII history. Thanks to James Hornfischer for writing such a compelling version of history and I also appreciate your recommendation that lead me down this path in the first place.

When talking about the Bayern vs. Tirpitz, you should also remember that, in addition to all the things Jingles brought up, there's dispersion penalty that you get when you're in a T6 ship vs. a T8 ship (and a corresponding bonus going the other way). Also, the fire starting chance is similarly reduced when a T6 ship shoots at a T8 ship. Kinda bullshit mechanic if you ask me, but it's there, and it's pretty significant. Not to mention the Tirpitz had a 21-point legendary commander and the Bayerns' captains probably barely had 21 points between them. The Bayerns really never had a chance the moment they decided to push into the Tirpitz. If they had stayed out of secondary range and just plinked him from 13km, they probably would have won. That tier-based fire/dispersion mechanic is one reason why I think Jingles ought to feature for more battles where the protagonist is middle or bottom tier. It's really more a testament to the skill of the player than the free ticket you get handed when you're top tier.
@gyrene_asea4133

That is the first I've heard of these dispersion/fire% mechanics for against Tier VI ships vs Tier VIII. Is there a reference?

The thing about the turtleback armour is: it's not actually that much worse at long range. For a shell to actually hit the turtleback it has to penetrate the belt, and as the angle of impact gets more and more normalised to the turtleback, it gets more and more angled against the belt, meaning it gets harder and harder to penetrate. What CAN happen is that plunging fire can punch through the deck, but even at a relatively high angle that shell should still hit the towards the middle, flat portion of the lower armored deck. Unless the shell comes in from almost directly above (which would be extremely extreme range) it probably won't hit the turtleback section. And if, by some miracle, you get a hit at 45km or whatever, then the turtleback actually starts helping again.

On a side note I feel like a lot of people sleep on the Brandenburg when looking for tier 8 premiums. While it has comparatively small guns it has a lot of them and they reload quickly. I’m also pretty sure it has the best secondaries out of all the German tier 8s. Of course you pay for that amazing brawling capability by having a much smaller health pool at around 56k and a low torpedo damage reduction. Still it’s one of my favorite ships in the game and quite fun.

I would not be surprised if the Tirpitz has better stats now than it did in its early days

As a former Gnevy player, sometimes you launch them at 6km and hope and pray the opponents on the opposite team are silly enough to sail within 4km and into your torpedoes.... a hope and a dream was all that was. Also sad to hear of Hornfischer's passing. May he rest in peace. I greatly enjoyed reading Neptunes inferno.

Ectually, Jingles - Bayern guns are 380mm/45 (as are the Tier VII Prinz Heinrich) whereas Tirpitz and Bismarck have 380mm/52, with a lot more velocity and penetration. Bayern is still a significant threat, guns not quite at the level of Warspite but still pretty good for Tier VI.
