Exactly 17 times outdoor and 18 times indoor record holder and 6 times world champion. The 6 m. 15 cm. in this video is not logged as world record as it was achieved indoors. Officially the men's pole vault record is Bubka's 6 m. 14 cm. achieved at Sestriere, Italy in 1994.

I witnessed the iron curtain myself as a young American in the early 80's. I wish I could have travelled to Donetsk to witness a record that has not been broken for over 20 years and probably won't be broken for a long time

I met him near this time at the american consulate in Rio de Janeiro. I still have his autograph on his business card. He was wearing either a t shirt or polo and shorts. I first thought to myself "look at the fucking muscles on this dude"! Then I learned it was Bubka. His muscles were unusual. Absolutely ripped! Not like a body builder ripped. He was truly ripped!

he was holding a 14" hand grip, Its just amazing how he can straight pole with that high of a grip.

Maybe one other US pole vaulter was Tarpenning, and one from URSS (or Russia, or Unified Team... it's difficult to know because it was the period of troubles) Krasnov. These ideas are based from the pole vaulters list at Barcelona in 1992 and other results I found on the web during the period 1991 to 94. If someone could confirm or complete?

Mesnil??? Impossible, in 1993 he was 16 years old, and vaulted only 4.30m at this time. I have also doubt about Gibilisco... he was 14 years old in 1993 !!! But it could be Gianni Iapichino ??? At the beginning of the 90's the best french pole vaulters were Collet, D'Encausse, Baudouin, Galfione (but yes, he was not at Donetsk in 93)... Maybe Baudouin and D'Encausse were at Donetsk... some pole vaulters in the video seemed similar

this guy was beast, he knew his sponsors would pay big $ everytime he broke the record so he'd go like 2 foot over the world record in practice and like 1inch in competition so he made bank every couple months. Single smartest athlete in the world. EVER

@EnJoker1 The audience in the beginning was really small, I didn't notice that it was packed in the end there, I was probably distracted by bubka haha. But needless to say... it is depressing that football, basketball, etc... teams pack stadiums 10 times bigger than that every weekend. There are a lot of sports like track and field that don't get as much publicity and don't grow as much because they are overshadowed by "spectator" sports. nothing against any form of athletics, im just sayin
