In this video, we dive deep into the events surrounding Carl Icahn's estimated $3 billion stock market loss on May 2nd, 2023, following allegations from Hindenburg of a 'Ponzi-like' scheme. A titan of Wall Street, Icahn has built his reputation on decades of successful activist investing. Yet, the stock of his investment company, Icahn Enterprises L.P., plummeted over 35% in just two days post the damning Hindenburg report. We also delve into the ramifications of this event, which saw Icahn's net worth take a staggering hit. How did one of Wall Street's most revered figures fall from grace so swiftly? And were his accolades built on shaky foundations? We'll answer all these questions and more, as we dissect the specifics behind Hindenburg's claims. Stay tuned as we shed light on the dramatic fall of a Wall Street titan.

I personally do not like these billionaire origin fables. How it is from rags to riches and how it was all ingenuity... in most cases people get lucky and/or unscrupulous. For instance: increasing shareholder value is almost always at the expense of the company's products and screwing over its customers. Forced obsolescence/unrepairability/infuriating lack of support/reduced service/legal shenanigans/patent trolling/etc. all increase shareholder value.

Hindenburg is gaining some serious trust points. I dont think anyone in his or her right mind would do anything to jeopardize that Also, Hindenburg itself is basically a stock trader which makes me think: what they know that we dont know, that they haven't shared with us yet Even if Icahn doesn't actively operate a Ponzi scheme, his "money management" styles/methods could resemble one, even if it's temporary! Lets not forget this is a corporate raider, not a trader! I wouldn't be shocked if we see that he did this. Just because you can dismantle a company and/or turn it around, doesn't mean you're gonna be a good fund manager 😅
@jeffshackleford3152
@jeffshackleford3152 Жыл бұрын
I imagine Hindenburg has positioned themselves long before they release any report. Meaning that they are either accelerating the inevitable decline or they need to cash some of their position out, so they at least put a short term wiggle in the stock to take profits in and then keep their wider position in place. Either way, they probably don't know much more than we do, they see an anomaly in the 10K and then do work to verify it. I think if one of us had the ability to do this, we could easily repeat what they are doing.

One of the key components of a ponzi scheme is you're unable to withdraw all your money at one time. You're stuck. When it collapses, you can't get out. IEP is a public stock. You can sell at anytime. Raising capital and paying dividends isn't a ponzi scheme. If Icahn borrowed from a bank and paid dividends, would that be a ponzi scheme? It might not be smart but it's definitely not a ponzi scheme. Words have meanings. Call it disingenuous or a fraud if you want, but saying something is "ponzi-like" is just trying to smear a reputation. Hindenburg is not the good guy here. They just want to manipulate to make money. No different than everyone else in Wallstreet.

Musk has a fanbase because he does cool things. They ignore things like P/E. His problem is that he says things, publicly, he shouldn't. Hindenburg doesn't have to do anything except short Musk stock and wait for him to shoot himself in the foot.

Interestingly, I owned shares of this stock a while ago due to the dividend, but then got out because it didn’t make any sense and I thought something f*cky was going on. Turns out, I should’ve done more research and shorted the stock 🤷‍♂️

Shenanigans aside, a short seller writes a negative article and gets what they want in the form of a price decline. Icahn might be dirty, but the short seller manipulated the price of the stock for their own benefit.

A cash dividend is a cash dividend. Just because Icahn takes his payment in stock doesn’t mean the cash doesn’t exist on paper. Edit: well I guess if you control the company completely and are willing to be fraudulent you can. You take the dividend in shares and then sell those shares for profit. If that’s the case…..yikes

So how is Hindenburg shorting IEP if only 15% of the stock is free float? IEP could also just cut the dividend. Couldn't Icahn do a reverse squeeze.
@jeffshackleford3152
@jeffshackleford3152 Жыл бұрын
Unlikely, the thing with fundamentally dubious companies is they rapidly decline once that is realized. Plus I would imagine that Hindenburg does not put themselves out of position, meaning that they likely have very good risk management. That is one of the major components missing from a lot of these short bias funds, they have poor risk management.

So how did we, er, “the people” make out over the last 50 years … including the Middle people, and the Little people.
