3 things I always try to remember when welding/fabricating is 1 always be comfortable and consistent. 2 no gap is the best gap. And 3 5 minutes of prep work will save 50 minutes of fighting with it. Doing great work on the truck, I’m really enjoying following along and learning different ways to think when fabricating!

Heavy D rarely charges for any of his recoveries and volunteers helicopter time in search and rescue cases which is insanely expensive in operational cost and the hourly maintenance per flight cost etc. both your channels are blowing up and it’s becasue both of you are good people doing good things helping so many people, often for free. As a boilermaker/welder, life sometimes hurts haha. I do love watching you guys fab this up though! Hot tip though if you are interested, never weld downhill. It won't penetrate enough to be a structural weld. Vertical up weld is where it's at!
@DouglasOYates
@DouglasOYates 2 жыл бұрын
As an AWS SCWI, I was thinking the same thing. Downhill is NOT as structurally as sound as uphill would be. Thin throat. But if the point is merely cosmetic, no real issues. Seen many a downhill weld in my time placed there to fix undercut, profile, to build weld leg size, and or fix pugly caps on welds. Definitely not recommended for structural strength as not penetrating as well to the root of the joint. And structural code wise, not permitted without qualification.

What does welding downhill mean in this sense? Literally on a down slope or from top to bottom when he was running the bead?
@DouglasOYates
@DouglasOYates Жыл бұрын
Progressing from top to bottom, which does not allow as much penetration to the root of a weld. In my experience with code welding, it is rarely permitted with a very few exceptions that I can think of in the pipe welding industry. In the structural world I live in of buildings and bridges, never for root passes in structural welds!

While I live in another area and won't be enjoying that particular park it doesn't matter. There's more need for a park like that than there are people willing to financially help create it. Most welders are probably guilty of closing their eyes to put a tack on something. I know I've done it. You hold a piece up to see how it fits and it in there perfect. You have the piece in place and your stinger is laying right there but your hood is over on the table. What to do, what to do, I know, I'll just close my eyes and tack it real quick.

Well you asked.....it looks terrific ! But.....the boom beams don't look heavy enough to be the world's largest off road wrecker , roll cage/headache rack is heavier . Don't think you want a bent boom on a long reach pick ! The end caps on the "roll cage " should have d rings . For holding the truck on a winch or just a hanging place . Now is the time to add , engineer your conveniences Now....like a rack for gerrycans . Water , oil , gas , diesel . Light brackets . Extra plugs on the rear from the inverter . Work lights . Fire extinguisher brackets . Lights in tool boxes , etc .the items you wished you had at one time or another . You have the experience to know what would be handy . I got faith in you Matt ! Just remember how many times you said.....damn I wish I had that . Love you guys and you are the king Matt with a wonderful team . Oh....and what you all did for Ed was wonderful .

The one bit of advice I learned the hard way- and I see you're trying to do it- always cover your glass when welding nearby! My own VW bus ended up with weld spatter embedded all over the windshield from repair work, and it does NOT come off the glass. So be diligent about shielding all exposed glass from the sparks. @@JKtheSlacker I'll chooch to that. IT reminds me of when I first got started in construction and I went out with the crew to help a Master Carpenter install a bunch of giant doors in a 100 year old mansion that was being completely renovated. The Master Carpenter, an old grizzled dude named Phil, told me, when I cut a piece a trim with an odd camber to it wrong, that "A little putty, and a little paint, will make a carpenter what he ain't", and boy howdy has that turned out to be one of the truest things I've ever heard. It likewise applies to pretty much any building material too. Oh, and when I asked old Phil what the difference between a carpenter and a Master Carpenter was, he said "about 40 dollars more an hour". Which I likewise found to be very, very true.

Generally for high load, low speed things you're better off with bronze bushings. Oilite being the Hoover/Kleenex of them in my circles. They can take the load better than bearings. Often called "farmer bearings" because they're also slightly more tolerant to no maintenance.
