Put mine one my Canon 5D full frame dslr. Great old lens, which I inherited from my Dad. It was on his 1980 Moscow Olympics edition of the Zenit TTL film camera. All manual settings and I prised off the 'smart chip' thing on the Fotodiox adapter as it caused error messages with the 5D. Only needs an M42-Canon EF (very slim) adapter. Now for some photos..

There's so much more to this lens than the bokeh... as you said, it's very sharp (i use super 35 sensor), and the colors are amazing, and adds a cinematic look. I shoot both on the Helios 44M and my Sigma 16mm 1.4 C, and the Helios looks SOOO much better, as far as colors are concerned. Sharpness is similar ( IF you get the focus right, which, for me, is a challenge on that puny little camera's LCD)

Honestly either one will be great and get you a similar look! The 44-4 has a clicked aperture ring while the 44-2 is de-clicked. If that matters at all to you than that could be a deciding factor. Flares are also a little less on the 44-4. Both have gorgeous bokeh

Bit late, but I've only just seen this vid. I have a 44-2 and a 44M-4, and there are noticeable differences between the two on FF Sony A7 (at least with my samples). My 44-2 is swirlier and the bokeh a bit softer, while the 44M-4 is a bit sharper and has more contrast and less flare (presumably due to multicoating).

@@APixerProductions It's hard to say which is "better" as that's subjective really - and there could be slight differences between samples. I'm really not even sure which I like better of my two. They're both great - and $20 for a 44m-4 is a nice price.

I don't understand why no company today seems to manufacture any affordable lenses with a certain character like this. Like why do we always have to get some old ass, half broken lenses from russia just to get a look that pretty much everyone you ask would prefer. It seems like there's a huge market for this especially for indie filmmakers but nobody seems to care. I know everything being old and manual is part of the charm I guess but I would love a lens like this that actually communicates with a modern camera so that things like auto focus actually work. It's so frustrating.
