This is our first time listening to ZZ Top. We were on a live stream the other day and got flooded with ZZ Top recommendations. We ran a poll and La Grange won the poll. We heard the news that Dusty Hill passed away and we send our condolences to his family, friends, and fans. RIP Dusty Hill

It's about a whorehouse in LaGrange, Texas. It was called the Chicken Ranch. It was in operation during the Great Depression. Nobody had any money or food back then. The men wanted their needs tended to, and the ladies of the evening had to eat. So, the men would pay the ladies with a chicken, hence The Chicken Ranch. The men got their swerve on and the ladies got to eat. It was a win/win. I live about 25 miles from there. Actually went to see ZZ Top when they performed in LaGrange. It was one of the hilights of my life. RIP Dusty. You made us Texans so proud!

ZZ Top guitarist and lead singer Billy Gibbons was there when the Jimi Hendrix Experience performed their legendary 1969 show at the Los Angeles Forum. At the time, Gibbons was still in his pre-ZZ Top band Moving Sidewalks, and opening for the Experience on a handful of dates had sparked a friendship with Hendrix. Things like that make you legendary.

I find this kind of thing interesting because it just shows how things can turn completely around over time. The guys in ZZ Top worshipped the old, black blues players who came before them, and (at least at that time) really were channeling them. Now, all these years later, a young black couple listens to a white band playing this stuff, and has no idea where it's all coming from. When in fact of course it's their own musical heritage. It's cycles within cycles.

They only have one guitar, one bass and one drummer. The "background" music IS rhythm guitar. THIS is is referred to as the melody. The "high pitched" notes you refer to is lead guitar. Lead guitar progressions are also known as "riffs" or "licks". Most bands have two 6 stings guitar players. One for rhythm, one for lead. Billy Gibbons plays both rhythm & lead without dubbing in the studio. They can (could) play everything on an album live in concert. They were the biggest little 3 member band in the world. Ironic side note: The only member without a beard is the drummer. His name is Frank Beard.

Great break down explanation. I'm not sure they will get the just of it all and realize how hard it is to sound this full and good with only a 3 piece band. Only those who have tried it, really understand how much talent the guitarist has to have. Bands like Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Rush etc.

The story behind the song La Grange ... the most famous brothel ever (in Texas). It was in business for over 100 years, people from even south of the border and Canada and Washington DC would go there .... A magazine issued reveals the history of the brothel and they promised to include a follow up story in a future issue that would include the list of names of known clients. The federal government finally shut the brothel down and no other articles was written about the Ranch.

Yes, this was the Infamous Chicken Ranch in LaGrange, Texas. The FEDS didn't NOT shut it down, an asshole newsman from Houston, MARVIN ZINDLER, made a show about the A&M and Longhorn football players each year. After many years of back and forth, the sheriff had to have it shut down.

@@mkelly1347 Marvin was quite a character himself. I was in college in Houston when this all went down. He was a consumer "reporter" for one the local TV stations and had developed a pretty big following himself. He brought a lot of attention to the Ranch by reporting on it. That forced the authorities to shut the Ranch down. I think they used unreported/unpaid tax as the supposed reason. Mostly it was the pols and they're offspring going there and not wanting to become part of the story.

I like how right before the ending solo when the drums come back in, you can hear Frank Beard lightly hit the snare as he was going to come in at that point but changed his mind, but the entry was so good that they left it in the final mix. I love when it wasn't so easy to edit music. It had so much more humanity to it. Once Protools took over, you could construct a piece of music that sounds so perfect that it's monotonous. The human nuances of music is why everyone, such as yourselves, reacts to older music, before it was produced in a factory.
