Fortunately Lead Guitarist Billy Gibbons is still alive and kickin' it hard, along with Drummer Frank Beard. However, RIP to Bassist Dusty Hill, a few months ago, he was integral to ZZ Top's sound, and his too infrequent vocals had real impact. Their early albums laid the groundwork for their 50 year run, and La Grange was one of their first big hits. One of many.

That little ole band from Texas never disappoints. Saw them on the tour this song debuted on for the Tres Hombres album in 1973 and they freaked us out with what heavy blues, Texas style, really was all about. Saw them at least 10 times and always a great time! One of the all time greats, more please, try Cheap Sunglasses. Enjoy! 🎸

@Vic Provost I saw them on that same tour! Pre-beards & the only real stage effect was that set of Longhorns behind them. By '73 I had seen everyone from Hendrix to Zeppelin to Deep Purple (heck, even Elvis) & that show stood out, right up there with bigger artists of the time. Saw them again in the 80's & that was a great show too. But early ZZ Top made a bigger (& more lasting) impression on me. 💙☮💙

That's awesome. I wasn't born yet when they started out in the early 70's but I did see them in the early 90's during their Recycler tour and they put on a hell of a show. They even had the spinning guitars they had hooked up to their belts.

The thing that's sometimes overlooked but really drives this song is Frank Beard's " Texas Shuffle " on the drums

Yeah you're right about that.... 'drive the song' is exactly the right description.... another guy like this of course was John Bonham, where his drumming cadence really drove their sound - like the Immigrant Song for example .. nice one!

I saw ZZ TOP at the swing auditorium in '74 '75 '76 & '77. That's San Bernardino CA Orange Show grounds. That's 4 years in a row. It wasn't a large venue. On one occasion the smoke was bothering my eyes so I got up and went behind the seats. I quickly discovered it wasn't the smoke that hurt my eyes when i saw a line of officers in riot gear heading to the doors.. It was in the paper the next day that there had been a riot of people wanting to get in and they used tear gas just outside the doors. (Used to be able to smoke indoors)

These cats paid their dues. They were a hard working band who were loved by their peers and colleagues for years before reaching what most people consider "mainstream" success in the early 80s with the advent of music videos and Mtv! Back in the 60s early 70s not too many people were hearing about ZZ Top, Jimi Hendrix sure did! ZZ played a few shows with Hendrix and he was quoted as saying that the best guitar player he has heard on the scene today would be Billy Gibbons! That's pretty much a mic drop moment there.

Mt dad turned me own to zz top in 1974 he was a simi famous drummer at the time. he met billy in Austin tx while he was touring with "Asleep at the wheel" Then he went to drum with Drifters and i went with him on that tour and he run into billy again we went to a party at this nice mansion zz top was at. Thats when i met billy i had my acoustic yamaha with me and got to pick a few songs with him and some other guys. thats when zz top was really taking off i think it was 1976. But billy showed me his squeal he on the guitar with the tip of the pick and a few other tricks. that helped me. And such a nice guy too wasnt stuck up like some of the other musicians i met over the years..i have been too many zz concerts to count. But the most memorable was in Brandon ms just 2 days after dusty hill died the sound tech played dustys bass part billy put billys hat on his mic so touching

ZZ Top are pure fire, in all their songs. And Billy Gibbons, although in terms of creativity he cannot be compared with some of the other great guitarists in history (Jimi Hendrix, BB King, Chuck Berry,...) has earned a deserved place among the best, because his touching precision is of an absolute domain. Live, there is no guitarist so technical and who controls the timing of each note so much. A real machine, this guy. You should see him in a concert, he is very spectacular.

The best concert ever! Saw them 2/1/1986 and was blown away. Sadly Dusty Hill passed away. Rock on! 🤘🏻🤘🏻. It’s southern rock 😂😁

I'm old enough to remember when this first came out. Loved it then and always have.

I remember, a long time ago, reading an interview with Jimi Hendrix. It had to be in the late 60's, when the interview happened. I can't remember exactly when I read it. The question was asked of Hendrix - who is the best guitarist in the world? The interviewer expected Hendrix to say, "me". Instead, Jimi Hendrix said he thought a young Texas kid named Billy Gibbons was the best he had ever seen. High praise indeed.

True story. A young father who likes a lot of classic rock observed his 3 year old toddler walking down the hall in his diaper goin "A-how-how-how-how"...and he knew the music was working it's magic.

Before he formed Z Z Top, guitarist Billy Gibbons toured w/ a band that opened for the Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1968... Jimi Hendrix, the guitar god himself, cited Billy Gibbons (who was still a teen) as his favorite guitar player 🤘🤘Unfortunately, Hendrix passed away in 1970, just before Z Z Top released their first album in 1971. According to the band, Z Z Top consider themselves a rock band, incorporating southern blues, boogie rock n' roll, old school R&B, soul and even 80's synth pop into their sound.
